Only, When in video mode, you cant use the viewfinder. Thats my experience anyway. You will be looking at the rear screen, which is impossible to see what is going on, when in sunlight.

Pentax K-r owners - opinions/thoughts

I've had my Kr for about 9 months now. So far I havent encountered any issues whatsoever, apart from some caused by my inexperience. Many issues come about due to settings, and you cant always have perfect photos using standard settings. It takes really good photos, sharp and with excellent colour reproduction.

So far so good. But if I start developing problems, I think I will move onto Canon. Just seems to be too many problems with Pentax cameras, even the top end. Seems they are too hasty to get them into production without adequate testing. I think the pressure was on the engineers to start competing and doing it quickly or we are going to go bust. I wonder if Ricoh will have the sense for better quality control and adequate testing. Mind you when you buy a Canon, you probably become just as aware then that they also have problems.

I had a magic lantern guide for my K20D, as well as the supplied manual when I bought the camera. While the magic lantern guide had some extra benefits over the manual, I dont think that it was that good that it warranted spending the money on it. The manual, if read very carefully and used with experimentation, is just about as good as you can get.

Nothing like a camera with scratches and paint wear. It show it is being used. Not much resale though.

Question about FF issue

I have been having some issues under tungsten light. I am using a focus card.

Using Pentax zooms 55-300 and 35-80. For each lens at the upper zoom the focus is spot on. But when I go down to the bottom end. The focus is patchy and has some ff or bf issues.

Will have to test outside, today, to see if there is the same problem in sunshine.

The focus card is A4 and probably useless in the low range because you cant get close enough to really be able to see the printing clearly. Manual focus, forget it.

Did some more tests outside and the issue is still a bit apparent, but acceptable. Probably just as difficult to focus manually, at the lower zoom levels, when the same distance form an object, using the upper zoom levels.

K-r handling dim tungsten light

Been testing the AF under tungsten light. Has anyone noticed that the AF is not quite as good at the lower end of a zoom lens. ie at the 55m of a 55-300 and 35mm on a 35-80. I have found that at the higher zoom the focus is excellent. I suppose that this is the inherent problem of contrast under tungsten light with a shorter lens.

Kr AF Fine adjustment

I suppose I will have to keep a card in my camera bag on any AF adjustments. I wonder if it would be necessary to have different AF fine adjustments for different levels of zoom in say a 55-300. That could be a nightmare, or would an AF adjustment if required be good for the whole range, on any particular lens.

Looking at the AF fine adjustment, no 21 in the config section.

My question is "if i make a fine adjustment f or b, will that adjustment only occur when that particular lens is on the camera or will it occur with all lenses on the camera. Is there a way to use it with that particular lens only."

New firmware update to 1.11 has some talk about fixing focus contrast under tugsten light. This may be the ff issue, because on the Pentax user website in the UK, it does not appear to be an issue. I will be interested to see if there is any change. Not that I noticed and ff or bf, before.

I like the camera so far. I am a little hard to please as well. Other Pentax Users (UK) dont seem to have any trouble with ff on the KR

The 55-300 lens even the DAL is a good quality allround lens. I got a white one, my wife thought it didnt look as professional, but I like it. There are a couple of other decent colours The metal brown, and a dark camo colour look good.

Lets not be too boring.

One thing, buying the kit lenses with the camera is the cheaoest was to buy, even if you keep them as a spare.

Did some comprehensive test on the KR inside, with my dog moving about. Any blurs were related to camera movement, subject movement. Interestingly enough there are three focus settings. Off the top of my head they are single point, five point (default) and is it 11 point.

Had it on 5 point and the camera seemed to focus on the larger object in the frame rather than the centre of the frame. But it was much improved when I switched to single point.

Also had a much better picture with auto white balance than with flash white balance. Tungsten was terrible.

All in all, I think the KR is very good. Hoping my E-dial, with constant use will not stick or need cleaning.

Hi, Glad to see a forum dedicated to the Kr. I am fastidious about getting a sharp image. It worries me that some people see that the KR has some focussing issues. I havent sold my K20D yet, so will have to be careful. But in the photos shown, I would have to agree generally that it would not appear to be the fault of the KR. The first would appear to be camera shake or subject movement, due to a slow shutter speed. In the second one I would again suggest that it is not the KR, because the second child and the arm in front are in better focus than, the subject.

Hope I am right because last thing I want is problems with sharp pictures, Sold the KM and my sigma lenses because of sharpness problems, dont want to have to sell the KR. K20D is fine but no video.
