I use a Ricoh GRD-II now, but if I was in the market I would look at the Olympus XZ-1 (in fact that will be my next camera, I think)

well, of course you are right regarding the numbers, but I was surprised what a difference it makes in everyday usage. Of course big bodies have their advantages too :)

Thanks JeffJS, I feared that, and it is a silly restriction to only lock exposure with an AF lens...kills my workflow with manual lenses a bit...oh my :)

FA 31mm f1.8 or DA 40mm f2.8?

never start lusting for Leica gear then. Even the f2.8 primes are in the € 1000,-- and above league, even used, sometimes.

erm, no. I recently sold my D700 in favor of the K5. The Pentax is almost half the weight and CONSIDERABLY smaller. It makes a huge difference during travel. Also, Pentax lenses are as small as Leicas. A K5+Limited kit is as small and light as a Leica M8/9 kit (I owned an M8 with an assortment of elmarits).
While the D700 image quality is superb, it almost took the fun out of photography for me due to it being too cumbersome to carry around when on travel, during events, etc. I only used it for dedicated shooting sessions because of that. So while it is a superb camera, it really is not for everybody.

AEL with shutter button using manual lenses?

oh, yes, I know that, thanks.
But I am talking about an A-type lens and the fact that it does no exposure lock with the shutter button, only with the AEL button.

AEL with shutter button using manual lenses?

hi,

I set the function to save the exposure when the AF is set.
So when I half press the shutter, I want the exposure to be saved too, as long as the shutter is half pressed.

my workflow: point the AE spot on the desired exposure target, half press, recompose and focus (manually) and then shoot.
this works on my D700, but the K5 doesn't save the exposure with a manual lens in use.

is there anything else I need to set? and don't tell me I need to use the AEL button, this kills the whole camera for me :(

thanks

Choosing a Lens

chosing a lens should be really easy, actually.
it should be 100% mission driven.

if you think about what you want to do the parameters for the lens should be clear. Then check your budget, and BANG, you got a decision.

while a bigger sensor K5 would be nice, I have to admit that the points raised in the letter are almost a bit absurd, but that's to be expected from somebody emotionally attached enough to run a forum like this in his spare time :)
I doubt there are enough forum reading amateurs with enough spare cash to make this a financial success for Ricoh.

And saying that FX is an upgrade path is a bit weird...The whole concept is hobbyist driven.

my first real camera was an EOS 1000 :)
But what really changed a lot for me was wireless flash. I use it even with compacts.

I have no room for a studio, so wireless flashes enabled me to do controlled light shooting at all.

good luck! :)
a photo-gear insurance usually also covers robbery, but I am glad that I live where I live when I read posts like yours.

maybe a cheap 1*Ds would be an option for trips into the zone.

the entire surface is a contrasty matte. very nice.
the markings are the same as on a standard Pentax screen. they are just etched in so they are bright/clear whereas the matte is...matte :)

good work, actually. This style is fashionable anyway at the moment :)
there is really no problem in shooting against the sun as it creates a wonderful late summer atmosphere.

Purple fringe with Pentax DA 35mm f/2.4 AL Lens

that's not bad fringing. look at what the Nikon 85/1.4 produces :)
Also, the part you are refering to is out of focus. out of focus means that the red, green and blue rays do not meet at the same point any more, thus aberrations like these are normal.
And every lens (or sensor) will exhibit this at hard black/white contrast lines.

lol, I just completed the transition from Nikon FX -> Leica M8 -> Ricoh GXR -> K5
size wise the K5 is nice, but the ZK almost perverts it :)

downfalls images are awesome, as always. But I cannot help but wonder if most of the images wouldn't have been better shot with more DoF at f2 or f4... :)

I had the Ec-B in the D700 and later used an Ec-S there. Now I got myself a K3 and Ec-S screen for the K5 and will stick with the latter one. Really nice, as expected.

I used a Novoflex 5 for heavy stuff and now that I do not user heavy tele lenses anymore (like that Mamiya 500mm...) I use a Linhof III that is superb.
The Giottos heads are no good compared to what Novoflex, Kirk and Markins produce.

The D700 is an amazing camera. When I sold my D200 and got a D700 with FX glass, it blew me away. I now got a K-5 and found that the ergonomics on the K-5 are a bit better, the viewfinder is a bit smaller. Other than that, the differences, except for the obvious difference of FoV are not that big.

Still, the D700 will give you approx 1 stop better noise performance, superb AF and a smaller DoF with say a 24-70/2.8, of course than a 17-50/2.8 at the same FoV, but you know that already ;)

for weddings Nikon makes sense, if for CLS alone.
