Without watching the whole video yet, he clearly states for him the 31mm is his standard lens. So actually he says he is a wide angle kind of guy and thats the perfect lens for him.

Looks promising, filling a gap in the lineup and playing the strength of the position of the FF cameras (landscape).

Just a little sad to see that now the last bastion of nostalgic backwards compatible lens line has switched to KAF4 mount and therefore cannot be enjoyed on all our older Pentax cameras.
On the other hand this makes the old FA Limited line more attractive for people who still use older Pentax bodies besides the new one and like to share their lenses between those.

No 25p or 50p for European video users?

Interesting find, the German manual does not mention 25 / 50 fps in the manual either.
The 25 / 50 FPS video options are not only relevant for broadcasting but even more for filming light sources powered by the German power grid. As we are using a power frequency of 50hz filming these light sources with 30 / 60 fps will cause flickering of these light sources.

You should direct that question to the Ricoh / Pentax through their official website.
I can only hope that this only an oversight in the manual. Have you tried to switch the region in the camera to your country?
Otherwise this looks like an unfinished firmware..

Just want to clarify on the part being able to expose at f1.4 @ APS-C,it can be misunderstood as meaning you will get the light of the full 1.4 aperture on APS-C as you will not. Like you correctly stated it will be more like an aperture of 2.0 as you only get a portion of the light on the smaller APS-C sensor.

The only way to get nearly the same amount of light from a FF lens on an APS-C body would be a metabones speed booster afaik.

K-1 aperture block??

I talked to a pentax rep today. He said it is a known issue of the lubricant of the mirror. If the camera is not used for some time it becomes sticky.
It is similar to the aperture block issue of the K-50 but that was of course a much worse problem. The K-1 problem seems to affects only a few people it seems. I told him I believe another thing adding up might be the battery which is going bad, so there might be a problem to create enough force to move the sticky mirror on the first try.

I asked him if it would make sense to send the camera in to get it fixed but he seemed rather pessimistic on that :(.

Just another CP+ report [pics included]

This year I was again able to attend cp+ on its last day (Sunday). As I knew for me there were no exciting announcements this year I could enjoy it more casually and relaxed.

I queued to try the GR III but thats no camera for me so cannot comment on that much. The touch screen is a welcome addition because it tickles down to other cameras even though focus via touch feels laggy atm.
Then I was caught by a staff member which was presenting a new 2.5D printing technique by Ricoh. They use a 3D-printer technique to give depth to a picture, even make it look like a real painting. They said their biggest picture, which they printed yet, took about 4 hours to print. The actual printer is industrial size (3 meters) atm, it is still a prototype and no price for an actual print decided yet. The actual depth for printing the 2D photo is calculated partly by algorithm and partly manually adjusted.

There are other companies using a similar technique but Ricoh is better in providing a smoother surface on the printing. The pictures looked very good, I can imagine many people buying these kind of pictures.

I got to try the new 11-18mm DA* Zoom and surprisingly it nicely covers the FF circle at 18mm. On lower focal length the black edges start to occur and you need to crop that out, at 11mm it is pretty severe. I also tried the new 35mm, it is a nice lens but comes with all the drawbacks such old lenses have, longitudinal CA, hexagonal bokeh balls, AF not so fast, no WR.

Here the zoom at 18mm FF @F9:

Here on 11mm FF @F9:

Then like JPT I stumbled over the guys with the factory custom made KP. They really enjoyed there time there and we talked and laughed a lot (so I greatly enjoyed it too). So they are enhancing several points on the KP. They have a special black coating on the lens mount which is harder and smoother than the original coating and is used originally by a famous Japanese watchmaker (I think it was Seiko). They havedifferent body colors and a flash top which is attached via the hot shoe. If you want to use a flash on the hot shoe you have to remove it therefore. Then there are the custom grips. They showed me one which was walnut and said its the same material Lexus uses for their steering wheels.
They have also a collaboration with a famous Japanese photographer and will preprogram the user-settings on the camera with that photographers preferred settings. They can use Ricoh’sresources which helps them a lot , so you might also be able to order it from the official website later I guess.
No words on pricing yet because its still in development. They will over it first in Japan and later on overseas (I complained a little that overseas people are eager to get these options too and always are second in line ;)).
Interesting fact, there were two people presenting the custom KP, one is an engineer and the other a designer. The designer told me that he designed the K-30 and the custom flash cover for the KP also inherits this long shape of the flash housing of the K-30.
Here the two guys, the left one is the designer and the one on the right the engineer. They were very commited to their customizations and gladly discussing any comments I made.

Also I saw a new Pentax baseball cap (black with big grey stitched Pentax) at the booth, these were design samples and will be probably available later this year.
At 2pm there was a presentation on the future development on Pentax products hosted in an interview style. They said the 85mm will be available next year. In fact they said that on all lenses on the roadmap xD (the 70-200F4, the large aperture wide DA*, the DA wide zoom and DFA superzoom). The interview guy also noted that the release date of the 70-200mm F4 changed from “spring 2019” to “2019 or later“. It was confirmed there were issues delaying the release of this lens.
I think they also hinted on a new camera for the 100th year release which might be the K-3 successor.

Just to increase the painful wait on the 85mm:

"New" full frame prime without WR is disappointing. Should be really mandatory by now. Feels like the DA Limited rerelease some years ago.
So still waiting for the wide star lens on the roadmap, hopfully this release does not postpone it until 2020 or later ...

PS removes moire has less noise on same ISO value and better colors.
I think these are all noticeable in larger prints.

Btw. you can shoot handheld PS with the K-1 at good light and steady hand, or just support on a wall etc. just like you would shoot pictures with long exposures without SR ;).

K-1 Mark II: Accelerator unit frees up processing power for autofocus?

Yes it will.
Read the dpreview review of the KP on the high ISO performance.
They improve color and contrast in cost of slightly less details (saw only the comparison on ISO 25.600 live so can not comment much on lower ISOs).

If you are worried about this you should wait until the K-1 II reviews arrive.

I asked for 4) at CP+ and the answer was no I am pretty sure this applies to 5) also.

The accerator chip is just a unit before the CPU, as they did not change any of the other infrastructure I would not expect any changes on buffer rate.

Short CP+ K-1 II Impressions

I visited CP+ today and had a touch and try with the new K-1 II with an english speaking staff.
After that I went to their small special booth where they show case the new high iso performance of the k-1 II with taking a picture simultaneously on the old and the new K-1 model and let you compare the results directly on the screen.

All the K-1 II new features are provided by the new accelerator unit, as we know, which only helps in faster processing the pictures and therefore allow new software tweaks / algorythms (like better tracking AF-C / better high ISO performance due to noise processing? [read below] and the new pixel shift mode).
The main processor or other parts have not changed though. Therefore there is no benefit to other processor intensive tasks like faster UI (which I hoped for :( ).
Also there is no benefit for video capturing because it does not use that unit (I specifically asked). Also they do not fokus on video and they had no information on a firmware update providing mechanical SR for video. They clearly stated that Pentax focuses not on video but picture taking.

The new pixelshift mode is taking pictures in interval mode with mechanical shutter and takes therefore longer than the real pixel shift. Which uses electronical shutter and is taking pictures faster in sequence (they confirmed this also).

The high ISO shots were compared at ISO 25.600.
The K-1 II had better colors with less false colors and more contrast.
But the edges were more smeared! It looked as if there is some mild noise reduction applied even if noise reduction is turned off.
One could easily see that the original K-1 picture had more defined edges and is less smeared. Like they had the number „4“ on a wine bottle and the inner space of the „4“ was smeared into yellowisch on the K-1 II whereas in the K-1 picture this was not the case.

But keep in mind that really was pixel peeping in max zoom, so I am sure nobody expects perfectly useable images at ISO 25.600 in 1:1 view. So due to better colors and higher contrast the overall picture will probably look better than on the original K-1.
Still I do not like that I have to give up details compared to the original K-1 picture. Especiallly if I am not able to turn these “improvements” of if I prefer more details instead.

Anyhow I can just advice anybody to think the hardware upgrade through and wait for reviews to make an informed decision.

Actually I wanted to update the hardware in my K-1 because I totally like what pentax is doing there. Especially from the environmental point of view.
But now I am not so sure if there is really a 500€ improvement in the K-1 II.
I will definitely wait for reviews until I decide.

Also please take these things with a grain of salt. Even if I wrote “they” I spoke only to one staff member so there might be some misinterpretations /-informations going on xD.

Here is a photo I took of the high ISO comparison shown on a big TV screen at the booth. You could even see the slight smearing there, take a look at the letters:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/r2ynvdykydzb5ro/IMGP6201.JPG?dl=1

I asked about the 50mm star lens release, they were only allowed to state spring but hinted on cherryblossom season (end of march / april).
They also had a flyer about a completly reworked ImageSync app in spring (fingers crossed).

I also asked Sigma about K-Mount lenses -> unfortunately there are no plans to release new lenses in K-Mount. Even if the person I asked understand our needs as she has a friend who also uses pentax cameras and is bugging here about this xD.
Same information on Zeiss lenses.

If interested I could upload some images from the exhibiton next week when I am back at at my laptop.

Simple answer, the original file is 2GB which I obviously won't upload.
So i cut that clip using vdub with directstream-copy on video / audio, hence the file extension and media info.

I did cutting not see as editing, but your right it is edited in that regard.
Btw. your welcome!

There are several reasons why people don't bother with uploading videos ( huge file size, privacy reasons - family members in video, ..).

As per request a very short unedited video-sample (K-1 FF-Mode + DA* 55 + ext. mic Rode stereo video mic pro):
Dropbox - IMGP4859.avi

Download file for full video quality inspection (~100 MB). Original camera codec, not reencoded in any way.

PS: I did turn the electronic SR off, hence the shaking in the movie (which in my sense looks still better then the artificial "stabilized" movement of Pentax electronic SR implementation, plus I can use deshake in vdub afterwards for better electronic stabilization, if I like to).

WR Travel Lens(es) For K1? Pentax-D FA 24-70mm Or Recommend Something Else?

I opted for the DA* 55 1.4 for my K-1 WR kit.
Reasons for this are better weather sealing because of AWR instead of WR and being prime it is less likely to be effected by the elemets compared to a zoom.

I recommend the DA35mm 2.8 LTD, a perfect everyday lens for APS-C for me and still on my camera in K-1 in FF mode (despite some shortcomings here) most of the time. This lens will do awesome:
  • head & shoulder portraits (bokeh in macro range is very nice)

  • landscape (outstanding sharpness edge to edge in APS-C)

  • nightscape (first version produces beautiful shaped stars of light sources)

  • macro (flowers!, slow insects, product / food)

  • travel photography (see all points above)

building a new PC with AMD Ryzen

Because I think I did not read a clear answer to that yet:
First you should decide if you:

A: You just want an state of the art PC with all the fancy stuff but it should be rock solid and does not involve to much hassle to set it up and keep it running. (The new Autooverclock feature belongs in this category!)

B: Do "Manual" Overclocking by yourself (which involves a lot of research, trial and error and time to spent on forums to learn about the process, also you should consider that this always involves the chance to get an unstable system and this can wear of your CPU / Board etc a lot faster) -> not so good for people who want a PC running without putting too much effort into it, alternatively see A

For A:
- Wait a month if you can! (Because there are some mainboard bios issues which need to be fixed (memory compatibility issues and so on), also the price will come down, and everything will be more hassle free)
- Buy an 1800x, or 1700x if money is an issue (almost same performance)
- Buy 2x16GB Single Rank (1R) RAM with at least 2666 MHz, check the QVL of your mainboard of choice for compatible ram (more than 2 ram dims only allow for max 2400Mhz atm and therefore should be avoided, but this might change with new bios firmware hence wait a month!)
- One nice 500GB Nvme SSD like the Samsung 960 EVO / Pro might be enough for the beginning
- add an external USB 3.1 (4 TB) HDD for backups (and keep it not attached to your pc and at an other place if possible, for example at work or so), Backup regulary!
- add additional Space as you need it for example an 4TB Western Digital HDD or 2x4TB Raid0 for speed or Raid1 for availability
- Mainboard depends on your needs / money you dont necessarily need an x370 chip, B350 might make more sense if you do not overclock

For B:
Start Reading all the reviews here and have fun:
AMD Ryzen 7 Review Roundup - Official Ryzen CPU Launch Coverage
-> inform yourself, decide whats best for you
-> if finished read ryzen-overclocking guides
(-> remember there is a chance you damage your PC or files if something goes wrong!)

( - Buy a 1700 (best budget / performance ratio, will most likely OC to 1700x or even 1800x and more)
- Buy 2x16GB 3600MHz Single Rank Ram with good timings
- Buy Watercooling equipment and so on
- ... (you will find out yourself) )

I used this on the K-1 sensor already (as many times on my K20D before), as it is the official recommended sensor cleaning kit in the manual, and it worked very well.
Just be carefull not to push to hard on the sensor, be sure to read the manual which is provided with the kit carefully before using it!!

If you bought your camera in Europe (or at least in Germany) you could also use your free basic-checkup which includes sensore cleaning:

DA* 55mm 1.4 on K-1 good extreme corner sharpness?

I ended up buying the DA* 55mm today. On the first look the sharpness is amazing if in focus and without motion blur.
Lack of corner sharpness is there, but really only the extremes.
Almost non vignetting, I think even the original hood can be used. It gave me only very mild vignetting wide open (not 100% sure if this was even by use of the hood).

Will soonish post some samples too.

I think it is time to reactivate this thread.

I finally got my K-1 and put on my SMC DA 35mm limited Macro.

First the bad news, there is visible vignetting througout all apertures.
Now the good news, otherwise the performance is pretty good in my opinion and the vignetting can be handled in post processing.

First some white wall shots with different apertures to show the vignetting:

At 2.8:

At 5.6:

At 8.0:

Sky at 8.0:

Here a real world sample:

Here with corrected vignetting (took 5secs in Lightroom!):

Correcting the vignetting could be problematic with high ISO, because the noise in the shadow might increase.
I would not recommend to buy this lens specifically for FF mode on the K-1. But for people as me, who already have and love this lens, it is very useable!

Here are some full resolution pictures, standard sharpening and color noise reduction turned off in Lightroom (plain OOC):

I was just wondering if anyone else watches the CP+ K-1 seminars at the pentaxplus channel on youtube:

https://www.youtube.com/user/pentaxplus

I find those a lot more interesting than all the K-1 hands on videos.

They are in Japanese, but even if you do not understand Japanese they are very interesting imho. I watched the HASEO seminar and he showed some very beautiful sample pictures he took.
He was praising the K-1 over the 645Z for portrait work. He even said he could use Pixel Shift (They call it Real Resolution) with Motion Compensation for some of the portraits, as long as the model can be patient ;).

The other seminar I watched showed samples where the Pixel Shift Motion Correction could correct flowing water of a long exposure, as well as moving people! He also tested some lenses in FF mode. Interesting to know, even the old 18-55mm seems to work fine from 35-55mm in FF mode xD.

The seminars are in Japanese, but even if you do not speak Japanese you mostly get the picture.
