About contrast.
Mostly a deliberate choice. I like them less contrasty most of the times but its also the lens itself. When I use my big strong flash on close subjects on a light ground I seem to get some serious light problems.
That beetle was a lot less contrasty and strange but I fiddled with it in LR and got something, if not great IQ at least artistic I think/hope.
About Bokeh, and blurry backgrounds.
Some, more advanced then me, bring along their own backgounds and that can be a great way to have a nice, non disturbing background. Could be a green'ish painted cardboard piece or similar. Shouldnt be to hard to carry around in a bag on the back.
One day I might try that but for now I like the challenge to make as good as possible with what I have. The bug sits were the bug pleases and I have to adjust accordingly.
