That's what scares me. They have an opportunity to take 3 excellent lenses and make a statement that they are serious. I don't think warmed over versions with new coatings is going to cut it. With 50MP sensors right around the corner, Ricoh needs to improve them when it comes to CA and edge sharpness while keeping the character and IQ.

The took the "Limited" label and slapped it on the DA 20-40mm and optically its not good enough to be called a Limited in my opinion. They are just cashing in on the name for marketing. The lenses are a concern. I have not seen anything from Ricoh that has given me confidence that they can design good glass.

I guess I can now be allowed to post in this forum? :)

I sold my first print off my website (still working out the behind the scenes kinks for full-fledged print ordering availability...will be launched no later than the end of the month), but I wanted to share the momentous (for me) occasion :D

Attachment 237932

And then a few days later, I sold this image to another friend that had been bugging me for a while:

Attachment 237934

Both have been delivered and couldn't be happier :)

I've always felt odd about a thread with such a negative title about Pentax's flagship DSLR being so popular on PF and wondered why it has been living on for such a long time.

Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 Coming for Pentax!

That Pentax users are far more excited about Sigma Art series over whatever Pentax was supposed to do and fix in lens department — and never did or does — is concerning. It shows that the owner has failed in its task to recognise what is true value of the brand, act timely, and deliver. And in turn users have embraced players that do deliver — Sigma.

Just to illustrate the point further, all new coatings Ricoh now uses in their advertising 3 years later after the purchase of Pentax, were patented for Pentax under Hoya. The HD, the Aerobright, etc. Ricoh already had all the tech in place and ready with the purchase in 2011, and only they needed was to act promptly: the competition does not wait, and in fact, learns from mistakes of others.

And they did not act timely. In those 3 years of sluggish action on Rioh's side, Sigma became a household name in modern lens design even in Pentax's own land. To say Ricoh's management of Pentax lens department is incompetent, would be an understatement.
But that it does not appear I am only criticising without offering an alternative path, imagine this:

In 2011, plan is formulated because Ricoh knows what they are buying (yeah, right), and the plan says all lenses will be updated in the next few years. Production of all current lenses ceases in early 2012, old stock is sold while inventories are depleted, and in 2013, 2 years after the acquisition of Pentax,
– all DA* lenses updated with SDM 2 tech and HD coating. SDM question that hinders the prospect of brand answered once and for all.
– new 70-200mm lens also added to the DA* family.

During the year, all DA Limiteds are also updated with HD coating, which requires minimum of investment.

That act in lens department would push people into buying Pentax lenses, and stick to the system even with only a K5II on board. Add a K-3 sometime, and you have a major uptake in appreciation of the brand.

But now when Sigma and Tamron have practically conquered the Pentax land because Ricoh did not act timely, they must act with twice more effort and twice more money just to make themselves visible and viable! They have lost the momentum.

Reading the comments, I don't understand the inferiority complex.
I have a K-5iis and thousands of dollars in lenses...but i personally don't care if someone writes a bad or great review of the camera.

People say they shoot Pentax because they want to be different, yet get all bent out of shape when people talk bad about Pentax.
Can't have both in this world unfortunately, if you want to be different, you open yourself up to criticism.
If you really want to be different, you should toughen up and don't let the negative comments and reviews bother you.

I've never turned the AA filter on. I don't think its a really important feature. Its cool technology, but a 24MP APS-C really doesn't need it that much. IF it had been on the K-5IIs then it might be a different story.

I can agree with most of what they say. I'm not a fan of the JPEG colors and Pentax has a lot of work to do with lenses when it comes to AF. The Multi-Area WB is of questionable value.

Its a great camera and DPR did a good job with the review.

I have to admit that it was exactly my reaction when I first discovered that there existed Pentax DSLRs.I had been looking for a DSLR for some time not quite finding anything with the capabilities I needed at a realistic price. At some point I stumbled upon the K-x (or K-m?) when looking through comparisons of noise and was surprised that not only there existed a Pentax DSLR but it was the one of the best performers (especially regarding high ISO noise) among anything up to double its price as well as having nearly all the features I needed that were missing from the Canikon and Sony models I had been looking at. A few weeks later I bought my first Pentax DSLR, a K-r.

Actually I knew there were Pentax cameras but I though they were only rebranded point and shoot compacts made by some obscure Chinese OEM.

They also change color with age, so even in the same room the light can vary from fixture to fixture. Fluorescent is notoriously hostile to photographers, it does many terrible things that require workarounds to get decent shots. Another one of its fun tricks is the cheaper ballasts operate at mains frequency, 50 or 60hz depending on your location, so the light is cycling colors 50 or 60 times per second. That means you need a slow enough shutter speed that will capture the full cycle of the light so you can get good consistent color between shots.

Also, in the future, don't delete bad pictures until you know for sure why they are bad. You learn more from your failures than your successes in photography, especially when getting help from those of us who have had our own similar failures in the past.

New HD DA Limited lenses

It hasn't dawned to many is that what we're witnessing right now is a total re-branding and redesign of Pentax.

Re-brandng in a sense that Pentax will reassess its values, clarify its promise, the message, and the delivery. Something like a man waking up after a long night in a local hangout, sleep in the gutter, now coming again to his senses and washing up his face.

Clutter removed, floors polished up, chairs lined up, new coat of paint on walls, windows cleaned. It's the new house, or rather, it's what an old one could have been long ago.

It is normal to happen, because if I was buying Pentax, I'd do exactly the same as Ricoh is now doing; make the brand up to scratch and sing it not only according to its time (because Pentax was lagging behind everyone horribly) but a few steps ahead in the future too. And that is what confuses many.

When there's so much misunderstanding about what's going on in this simple and benign example of a DA Limited lens line revamp, I suspect the reactions upon seeing all new cameras will be even more shocking to some. I rather say, brace yourself all of you who claim to know Pentax; start with the look of the new HD Limiteds, try to connect it with the look of new flashes, and try to imagine a new camera, or the inevitable HD revamp of the DA* lens line.

Sticky: How to use/meter Manual & M42 Lenses on all Pentax DSLRs (K-1, K-3, K-5, K-30, etc)
Posted By Adam
Replies: 358
Many Pentax DSLR owners want to use M42 screwmount (Takumar) lenses, or M or K manual lenses, on their cameras because of the low cost and relatively high image quality of these lenses.

If you're wondering whether or not these lenses can be used with Pentax DSLRs (or the K-01), then the answer is yes! Pentax as well as third-party manual and screwmount lenses can easily be mounted on any Pentax DSLR (such as the K-1 series, KP, K-3 series, K-70, K-S2, K-S1, K-50, K-500, K-30, K-5 series, K-r, K-x, K-7, K10D, K100D, K200D, *ist D, etc.) Just follow this guide!

Modern Pentax DSLRs use the Pentax "K-mount", which employs a bayonet and therefore differs significantly from the M42 screw mount. The older manual M and K (SMC Pentax-M, SMC Pentax) lenses actually use the bayonet, so they will not need an adapter - you can skip straight to the lower portion of this article (starting at "Important!") for information on how to meter with those lenses. Screwmount lenses usually have "Takumar" in their names, and in order to mount screwmount lenses on your k-mount body, you'll need a Pentax k to m42 adapter. Pictured above is the genuine Pentax adapter, which is ideally the one you want to get. Similar third-party adapters are also available. Caution: Many third-party adapters, such as this one, have a protruding flange which will prevent you from focusing all the way to infinity. If you want to buy a third-party adapter (they're generally cheaper), make sure that they don't have this flange. Here's an example of a good third-party adapter.

Once you have your adapter, the next step is to install it on your camera (it can easily be put on and removed on-the-fly). Check out the m42 to k adapter manual.

After you've installed the adapter, you'll want to mount the lens. This is done by screwing it into the camera until the lens feels firmly attached. The focusing window and lens ring should line up with the camera just like any other lens. Now that your lens is mounted, let's talk about how to take photos with it.

Important! The hard part is to get the camera to actually fire when a manual lens is mounted. In order to accomplish this, enter your camera's custom function menu, select the "Using Aperture Ring" setting (usually at the end of the menu, #21 on the K-7, #27 on the K-5, #27 on the K-3, #26 on the K-1), and set it to 2 (allowed). Once you do this, the shutter will at least fire, as it wouldn't have with this setting disabled (you would simply have seen an F-- indication on the top LCD/info screen). The setting description should read: 'Shutter will release when aperture ring is not set to the "A" position' when "allowed" is selected. Also note that the mount on the lens must be conductive for electrical current so that it shorts the electrical contacts on the camera body. All Pentax manufactured lenses have a conductive mount, but some third party lenses do not in which case the area of the mount touching the contacts must be sanded down.

K-30, K-50, K-500, K-70, K-S1, K-S2 and K-01 users: make sure you also set your green button "action in M/TAv Mode" to Tv SHIFT. This is found under the button customization menu (page 3 of the main menu) on the K-01 or as a custom function on the K-30, K-50 and K-500. On the K-S2 and K-70, look under the e-dial programming sub-menu under button customization in the record menu.

Finally, ensure that auto ISO is disabled.

At startup, if your camera asks you for the focal length, enter the actual focal length as labeled on the lens. This will ensure optimal Shake Reduction performance. For zooms, you can use the lower end of the zoom range (this ensures that there will be no over-compensation), or the focal length that you shoot at most often.

Now, let's discuss metering. Since manual lenses don't feed aperture data to the camera, the only way for the camera to check how much light is being passed through the lens is to measure the light while the lens is stopped down. Follow this procedure to properly meter with a screwmount, M, or K lens:

___0. Ensure that the "Using Aperture Ring" custom function is set to "2 (allowed)" (K-30/50/500/01 users must also ensure that the green button is configured to Tv Shift in M/TAv Mode) as described above
  1. Set your camera to M mode using the mode dial (your camera won't fire in other modes*)

  2. Compose and focus your image.

  3. Using the aperture ring (the ring at the very back of your lens; it will have numbers such as 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8 written on it), select your desired aperture setting. Note that the smaller the aperture number is, the more light passes through the lens, and the blurrier the out of focus areas of your photograph will be (and vice-versa). Note your lens will not stop down until step 5.

  4. [Screwmount lenses only] Switch the diaphragm clutch on your lens to "Manual" (you can leave it on Auto when composing and focusing if you don't want a dark viewfinder).

  5. Measure the light by either pressing the "Green Button" (older bodies may use the Av button), or pushing your power button to DOF preview mode (only available on high-end bodies). Your camera will automatically set the shutter speed for you.

All that's left now is for you to press the shutter release button to take your photo. Congratulations- you've now learned how to use M42 and M & K manual lenses with Pentax DSLRs!

*Screwmount lenses may also be used in Av mode since they are always stopped down to the aperture you will be shooting at (unlike M&K lenses, which are stopped down only when the shutter is released or when you meter as described above).

Note: if your aperture ring has an "A" on it, instead of doing stop-down metering as per this guide, you'll want to set the ring to "A" and use the camera's scrollweel to adjust the aperture via Av mode.

Soft lens or normal - Samyang 14mm

I don't own the lens, but I will add my $0.02 to the discussion. A common complaint with wide angles is that they are not sharp. A common problem is that the photos taken with them are simply out of focus. The short focal length does provide greater DOF, but in practice that means very little if you are going to pixel peep. After all, magnification of the final image is part of the DOF equation. Ultimately, there is only one true point of focus regardless of focal length and if you miss it...

Translation...focus accuracy still counts if you want the photo to be sharp.

Problem...it is very difficult to attain accurate focus with an ultra-wide. Everything is so "teeny" in the viewfinder that it is hard to tell what is and is not in focus. To make things worse, many wide angle lenses have very short focus throws.

Solution? If you are going to be picky about sharpness, use the focus aides on a decent aftermarket screen -or- use a focus loupe in live view. Focus on the near aspect of your subject and let the background take care of itself. In PP, make a careful assessment for lateral CA and correct if your tool is capable of doing that chore. Lateral CA causes global loss of sharpness and is often present.

One other thing...when doing tests for lens sharpness, use a flat target parallel to the plane of focus. The old rule of thumb is to do this at a distance 20X the focal length for 35mm film or 30X for APS-C. This may not be practical for 14mm, but I think you get the gist.

Actually what Clavius has recently consistently posted about Pentax (and other brands) has generally been on the mark, or at least in range. Pentax has a reputation for business blunders going back decades - as far as staying too long with the M42 mount. For a long time they were fondly labeled "conservative" - as in too conservative - while Canon, Olympus, Nikon, Minolta and others took their market.

More recently Hoya changed Pentax. Hoya's change to Pentax's business philosophy, to narrow Pentax's target market to buyers of small APSc cameras with a reputation for making limited-quality pancake lenses, to target active, younger, outdoor users of durable cameras including compacts (pedestrian, licensed copies aside), to reduce the number and frequency of new offerings, (i.e. to pick niches and refuse to play in high-traffic market segments, etc.), to decimate the USA distributor business model (only 50 people supporting a "Box-store" distribution channel - hell Bootic.com has 25 employees - apparently doing the same in Europe outside France) and to closely manage and raise their end-prices is clearly undeniable. Pentax's resulting change of market share, loss of identity and loss of momentum is undeniable.

The 645 is a sport, almost an accident, but it is a success, it appears. Every other mainstream Hoya offer has been a success. The MILC attempts have been questionable - great cameras, but introduced at a time that Pentax was distracted in the pre- and post-acquisition disruption (which takes over a company's attention in unimaginable ways; trust me on that). During the Ricoh change it appears the product development cycle was again disrupted, and development around the 24Mp sensor was unsuccessful, forcing Pentax to extend the K-5, thus allowing competitors to redefine the market once again.

On any given day we have the choices we have. We can wish for the past. We can hope for the future. We can only choose to use what is available.

We could choose to be thankful that Hoya kept Pentax's heart beating just long enough to sell it to Ricoh.

We'll see what happens in the next 12 months. But right now Clavius has some valid opinions.

As I have mentioned in an earlier post, I am an old Minolta/Tamron dude. I still have all of it. None have failed. But they all are showing their age. Fractured seals, internal stains of lens elements. All about 20 - 30 years old. Can I expect the same from modern gear? If not that depresses me to no end. As I have also mentioned I work in IT. Software development. I pride myself in delivering a bullet-proof solution. I always have. I have been self-employed most of my life. The few times I had to resort to employment I hated it. I was constantly being chastised for designing "Cadillac Solutions" to "Chevrolet Problems". Sometime in the last 20 years I swore I would never be an employee again. Every problem is a "Chevy Problem" that could have been avoided if you had taken the time to develop a "Cadillac Solution". Forgive me I'm a little tipsy. Busting my ass on documentation for our next release. I just wish those that provide us the the high tech tools to indulge our hobbies or explore a professional career would conduct themselves with the same integrity, It has taken me a year to port our complex business product from XP to WIN7 and 64 bit. Only because Microsoft screwed up on a ton of internal details. I'd hate to be a professional photographer that tied their career to Pentax. The Pentax 6x7 was my dream slr, years ago. I think that's what it is called. Cheers and good night.

Obscene is a fair and accurate summation. The AUD$ has exceeded USD$ parity for two years now and pricing for a 50-135 in Australia still sits at $1500. A glance at UK pricing suggests they're worse off than we are. I guess the rest of the world are subsidising the States - the scale of the discounts speaks volumes.

No worries here though. After deliberating over the 50-135 and exhausting local options for competitive pricing I went for a second hand Sigma 70-200 2.8 for $500 (with 12 months warranty still on the clock) and couldn't happier. I don't mind admitting that the swing away from a Pentax lens was driven in no small way by the feeling that I was being ripped off. No amount of superior IQ can compensate for that.

From what I have read, FF really is the savior of all. It is all about DoF is what I can deduce. DoF will change everything about your photography. This is all you will ever need. Things such as IQ and artistic integrity will instantly become obsolete, much in the way VHS frmat when DVD hit the market. This is comparable to how Jesus performed miracles to those with incurable diseases like leprosy and blindness. The moment that little sensor becomes 40% or so larger, you will see that anything you shoot at turn into gold. It will effectively put an end to second and third rate photography. Photography competitions will immediately become a moot point.

Had a good look at the patent and it appears to be a simple transfer to Pentax Ricoh Imaging. A few comments on shake reduction. This was first used on the K100D then upgraded to the K10D with added provision for rotational movement. I believe this is the same system used on all models following.

From the details on the patent is was applied for much earlier and was only finalised on Jan 3rd 2012.

I am wondering if the lack of future models was delayed until until these patents were legally transfered.

Sticky: How to upload / link photos - BEGINNERS START HERE

There are four ways of posting photos in your threads:

1. Attach images directly* to your posts
Attachments are files saved inside individual posts. You can attach photos to virtually any post on the forum.

To upload an attachment:
  1. Start a post by clicking the 'post reply' or 'new thread' button, (if using quick reply, skip to step 2)

  2. Scroll to the lower portion of the page

  3. Click the 'manage attachments' button.

You will then be able to upload image files straight from your computer. Any attachments will automatically be shown in your post. You can upload up to 100Mb of photos at once and our system will scale them appropriately if needed. We recommend uploading photos no larger than 1400 pixels wide x 900 pixels tall to avoid auto-scaling.

Important: be sure to click on the upload button in the attachment popup, and be sure to save/submit your post. Otherwise, your attachments won't go live.

Note: you can also attach more photos when editing a post (in the go advanced view) or posting a quick reply.

Acceptable image file types include: gif jpe jpeg jpg png

If you attempt to upload a very large file, our system will time out after reading in more than 100Mb of data or waiting 60 seconds, whichever comes first. You will then be shown a session "token error". To fix this problem, scale the photo to a smaller (web-friendly) resolution before uploading.

To increase your total attachment space, click here.

2. Embed an off-site image
To embed an off-site image, simply place the following code in your post, replacing the placeholder URL with the address of your actual image:
[img]http://www.site.com/image.jpg[/img]
You can also use the button in the visual editor and enter the URL in the prompt.

The URL must be a valid internet address. If your photo is currently on your hard drive, see method #1 instead.

Important: the link you enter here has to point directly to the image, not to a page containing to the image. The easiest way to verify that the link is correct is to check to see if it ends in an image filetype extension, such as .JPG, .GIF, or .PNG.

NOTE: Please embed only reasonably-sized photos. No monstrous filesizes or resolutions!

3. Post images from the User Photo Gallery
To upload an image to the User Photo Gallery, click here.
To then embed your uploaded images, either follow method 2 above, or click the button if using quick reply, or the "insert album photo" link if using the main editor, and proceed to select your photos. Click on a photo to embed it, and make sure you choose the appropriate thumbnail type from the dropdown.

The filesize limit within the user photo gallery is generally 2Mb. There is no resolution limit.

4. Post images from a Personal Album

To upload photos to a personal album, click here.
To then embed your uploaded images, either follow method 2 above, or click the button if using quick reply, or the "insert album photo" link if using the main editor, and proceed to select your photos. Click on a photo to embed it, and make sure you choose the appropriate thumbnail type from the dropdown.

The filesize limit within the album system is 1Mb, and the resolution limit is 1024x1024px. Larger files will automatically be scaled and/or compressed.

For gallery and album photos, you can also use method (2) given you copy the original URL of your image.

5. Embedding attachments already posted in another thread

Click the button if using quick reply, or the "insert album photo" link if using the main editor, select "albums", "gallery", or "attachments" in the left hand dropdown, and proceed to select your photos. Click on a photo to embed it, and make sure you choose the appropriate thumbnail type from the dropdown. A list of all your attached photos is also found here.

E
XIF Information

EXIF information will automatically be read from any attached photos in your post and displayed in a dropdown above them.

EXIF is also read for photos within our user photo gallery or album system, but is not available when you embed those photos.

Note: EXIF information must be complete in order to be read. Incomplete information (< 8 fields) will be ignored.

Image Sizing

The maximum embedded image width and height are by default constrained to 1024 pixels. Clicking any photo will allow you to view it in its original dimensions. To change these defaults or to disable the resizing system, visit your profile options.

We kindly ask that your embedded photos do not exceed 1Mb in filesize to speed up loading. You are encouraged to use links to large files.

You may want to occasionally check your upload quotas and filesize restrictions here on PentaxForums, as changes are sometimes made without notice!

We used to rely on the [imgwide] BBCode () to embed wide photos in posts. While you may still use this tag (see here for details), it has become deprecated due to the introduction of the auto image resizing system.

Here's some images showing the process of adding an image to a post: Here, showing how to add an image thread here in Post your Photos.
First, this is the page you see when you go to create a thread. I have edited the text as shown.

Next, when a user clicks on the "Manage Attachments" button, the following pop-up appears:

Click on "Choose Files". A screen will appear showing the user's folders on their computer and they can navigate from there to the location of the photo they'd like to upload.

The user should click "Upload" after navigating to the and clicking on the image they'd like to upload.

I was shooting some of the SA Kitesurfing Tour on the weekend (for fun), and with the angle somewhat into the sun, the shadows and colors were a bit of a problem. So I decided to try B&W transforms, and I think they have worked out fairly well.
C&C welcome.

Cheers
Kevin

I've recently been thinking about the 18-135 as a walk-about lens, but that damned photozone review was getting in the way.

Then I discovered this piece Camera Reviewers Don’t See What I See | Black Star Rising which, combined with the more positive comments in this thread, has somewhat restored my confidence in the idea.

So, we'll see about the lens, but I thought others might like the article, too. It doesn't just apply to the 18-135, of course.
