Sigma 17-70 lens problem on K-5

Thanks for feedback. But yep... I know 2.8 is only accessible at the wide end. I have tried cleaning contacts on everything... camera and
lens. All other lenses work fine on the K-5 and the 17-70 is similarly dysfunctional on my K-20. Beats me. Just cant access F2.8 no matter what.

Sigma 17-70 lens problem on K-5

I have a Sigma 17-70 on my K-5. I have noticed that I cannot access F2.8 in camera anymore. I cant get the lens to open wider than F4 in any mode.
Everything on the lens seems to be hunky dory with no sticky blades or anything. Why is this? Could it have been the new 1.14 firmware install? Any
feedback appreciated.

As a fan of NZ I really enjoying the terrific ride you took me on with your images. Like you, I also have a lot of great images from a tour of the South Island I did a few years ago. Your pics inspired me to check a few more places when I go back. Have attached a few... all from South Island. Wharahiki beach on the West Coast is one of my favourite beaches in the world. Also my take on Milford...amazing place. I believe they shot some footage of Lord of the Rings at Poolburn. I can see why, it definitely has an 'other worldy' feel about it. Apparently they disguised the huts with huge pieces of 'rock camouflage!
Happy travelling. Denisio

Canon S100 backup camera

I know I know... this is Pentax forum! But for those of you brandishing backup cameras, I just wanted you to know about my Canon experience. (I own a K-5 BTW). Here is my post to the Canon forum about why I wont ever buy into Canon again - ever:

Canon S100 ' Lens Error' issues:

I wonder how many of you have experienced Canon's infamous 'Lens Error' issue? My recently bought S100 camera succumbed. It was bought at T-Dimension in Hong Kong in March 2012. As Canon proclaimed it was a manufacturing fault, I assumed Canon Australia would fix the fault. Nope. (A few days later I received an email from them saying they would in fact fix it. Meantime I'd already sent the camera off to seller in Hong Kong). This kind of response from Canon was going to prove prophetic. Read on:

So having duly sent the camera off to T-Dimension Hong Kong, they now say Canon claim it is a user fault??? They sent me three pictures of the camera's exterior to prove this. The camera in the picture looked damaged in a way that mine was definitely not. Even so; wouldn't you say the INSIDE of the camera would be better way to ascertain exactly what the fault was? I wanted T-dimension to confirm my camera serial number was that on the pictured camera. The number they quoted me was NOTHING like a Canon S100 serial. Different sequence and numbers altogether. Go figure. (Mine has 30xxxxxx prefix - in the nasty 29-41 batch!)

Now T-Dimension are demanding money for camera repair and shipping... having already posted to them at my expense. (Did I mention it's still under Warranty!!!)They will not give me any information in relation to either the camera, likely costs or who exactly is doing the repair. So either Canon are refusing to take responsibility for the manufacturing fault or T-Dimension are pulling a fast one thru a third party repairer so they can avoid both postage (and repair?) costs. Presently T-Dimension, other than giving me lots of 'anything we can do to help' on their emails, has failed to inform me of a single fact pertaining to the repair of my camera. I have not heard from them in 36 hours. So I wonder if anyone else has any similar reassuring Canon or T-Dimension stories?

I know five things for sure and certain:

I. Climate change is real

2. I will never - repeat NEVER - buy ANY Canon product again.

3. I will never buy from T-Dimension again.

4. I will post every gram of negative feedback I can to every forum I know about this issue.

5. I will ritually hammer the camera to dust when/if it is returned and post it to Canon so they can enema it back to where it belongs.
Denisio F.

PS: I took some time to check out how common this S100 issue was. Seems like it is possibly an epidemic. I collected a bunch of links/complaints/info about this issue if anyone would like to see it. Wasnt able to link the Word Doc here unfortunately.

PSS: Did I mention the video of said deed in item #5? I will post on Utube. Stay tuned.

Still no 11-16mm zoom...?

I see the road map doesnt list the 11-16 lens... or as is most likely... Pentax will not allow Tokina
to offer the lens in a K mount. I love the K-5, its a stellar camera, but my next will most likely be
a competing brand (something like the Fuji X100 perhaps) due to the Pentax penchant for missing
the bloody obvious - yet again. Having been with the brand since 1972 its going to be a wrench, but
I have been peed off just once too often. Hoya's lens price hike was the first straw... this will be (for me)
the last.

Tom S... So I'm not the only one obviously. I would be hard pressed to ever buy WD again. How do I access an offline site without uploading thru my satellite connection site? I'm limited to 1g/4g on & off peak with my satellite connection. (Exxie @ $45 mth). I have at least 2Tbs of data... which would make my upload cost astronomical...unless of course I'm missing something re your suggestion?

aTOMx... How much are the Enterprise HD's. Can I set up a RAID system om existing computer? I thought I would most likely have to upgrade the whole motherboard etc. Correct me if I'm wrong?

Reliable HD storage

I wonder if any of you folks would like to recommend some reliable HD storage? I have been very disappointed with the failure rate of the hard disc medium. I have just had a fourth HD fail... a 1Tb Western Digital Elements. The first copy of this failed in just three days and I had it replaced! This one (same brand/model) failed after 13 months. I guess I should have seen the writing on the wall then. I run backup, but it hardly reduces my nervousness... at this rate I could easily get a double fail. I am starting to seriously think about triple backup! Cloud storage is out as I have an expensive (relatively) limited capacity satellite connection. If you've ever lost precious images - and I have - this is obviously a vexed issue in relation to digital storage. So, I wonder if any of you have some ideas about the best way to go here? Nogster

AF adjustment..can you tell me...?

That was an excellent link guys. Been experimenting with it right now. Other than the distance required to set up the camera - 15 metres for my Sigma APO 70-300 - it seems relatively
straight forward. (How do folks with small rooms and long lenses accomplish this I wonder?) Anyway, my lens seems spot on at 300mm with a +5 adjustment. Still doesn't explain why
I'm getting more bird tails than eyes in focus... no matter how careful I am. One anomaly I noticed was that at 70mm, the AF point was quite noticeably out. What does one do about that?
Any views on this? Thanks for the excellent reference BTW. Appreciate it. Nogster

Is the AF lens adjustment on the K-5 reductive or additive? For instance, if my lens is front focussing I assume
I would initially head into the minus direction...yes? Appreciate any feedback. Thanks, Nogster.

The Daddy of them all is CS5 of course. But it's very expensive to acquire legit unless a verified student. There is a new Elements out, I thinks it's 9. I'd go for that in your shoes.
Or - if you'd like to save a few dollars - get the superseded version. Usually very cheap and has almost all you need in a pretty well laid out package.
I have tried and tried to like Lightroom, but I don't much like the interface a whole lot. I find it clunky as hell after Photoshop. Get familiar with Elements and it'll be a snap to
move onto 'Big Daddy'. Of course they are all a learning curve, but you know what they say about practice? Have fun. Nogster

I cant give any feedback re T-Dimension warranty dealings (thankfully) but I found them excellent to deal with and very very price competitive. $A1259 for the K-5, with kit lens, spare Batt, screen protector, 8gig SD card spare batt. case etc. Fast service to my door to isolated address (HK-Oz 5 days) and regular updates. Even useful
assistance with our $1000 GST import issue. The K-5 is a beautiful piece of kit BTW.
Good luck. Nogster

K-5 and zoom lens questions...
Posted By NogBoy13

When I mount my Sigma 70-300mm APO lens, the K-5 sometimes throws up the screen that requests focal length input... the same one that pops up when I mount the old primes. (In this case it throws up the 135mm measure???) Why is it doing this... and do I actually have to select a focal length number for it? I thought the camera is supposed to access this info automatically?

Another question relating to this: What measure does one put in for an old zoom lens - Pentax or third party? I am assuming its the maximum zoom limit of the lens. Appreciate any feedback.
Thanks, Nogster

K-5 problem or are my eyes going bad???

The dipopter is really just a fine tuner for your eyes. Get the image as focussed as you can and tweak till you get the sharpest image. But I'' wager it isnt that!

If you look up my old Dpreview NogBoy13 posts you'll see I had LOTS of this problem with my K10 and K20. Looks fine in the finder, but when you actually looked at the completed image its waaaayy out. Drove me absolutely crazy. I reckon you're having the same issues I did. Definitely something not lined up somewhere. I gave up using my old primes altogether cos it was just too depressing. Even the visit to CR Kennedy was useless. I got LOTS of response that it was my flawed technique diopter etc etc ad finitum... and I knew it wasnt those. My K-5 seems to be much less problematic, tho that may change. I often wondered if it might be either the SR feature or something to do with what is essentially 'full frame' lenses. Perhaps the view train line up was flawed somewhere.

Sorry, given my experience I have bugger all I can offer that's much help. Be interested to see if you do solve it how you did it... and I was surprised this issue wasnt more widely recognized back then. Good luck. Nogster

I had a K-5 landed at my door (remote address in WA) from T-dimension for $1259.
Included 8g card, spare Batt, screen Protector, cam bag and kit lens. They split the package and I copped no GST. (They will help with this). This is my 3rd O/S purchase so far and had no extra cost so far. Lucky..dunno? Very good service and 4.5 day delivery. Very impressed with service and follow up. Nogster

At some point I'm thinking of acquiring the very good value for money 35mm 2.4 lens.
But how does it stack up against the 50mm 1.7 (or 1.4) exactly? The 35mm range will
definitely give me that nice old film 50mm sweet spot I got very used to with my old film Spotmatic, but what can I expect re viva la difference? Nogster

Old Lens on the K5
Posted By NogBoy13

Well I had ALL kinds of issues using the old primes with the K10 and K20... lots of horrible focus problems. I suspect some kind of design bug somewhere cos nothing I did would fix it - drove me bloody crazy trying to sort it. Consequently I gave up using the the old lenses altogether. However, the K-5 seems a very different kettle of fish somehow, they seem to work superbly with it - thank God! I wouldn't be surprised if some of those nagging bugs were quietly dealt with at Pentax frankly. I feel a little vindicated, as I had a lot of forum feedback that (sometimes not too subtly) suggested my competence/technique was more likely the issue. So... so far so good.
So I guess I'm saying give it shot... with the K-5 at least!

Setting centre focus point in green mode

Thanks for the feedback. I actually dont use green mode that often, but its handy for quick stuff when one needs to nail something ala point & shoot. You know, instant mode for streakers, UFO's... and when Tony Abbott says something relevant and truthful. (Oz political joke!)

I use manual everything most of the time, including focus. After 30 years with a Spotmatic II, I like to fool myself I'm smarter than a camera! I was just setting up the K-5 for my parameters. It's definitely a different setup to my old K20... but once one gets a handle on it, it becomes obvious that the menu (and the camera) are way more sophisticated in most regards. Pentax have pretty much turned Green mode in a P&S mode... which is fine. I was just having some minor hiccups sorting it all out. I agree that a machine like the K-5 definitely needs other modes to get the best out of it - no argument there. Hands down - it's a beautiful piece of kit. Very very impressive. I have noticed that my old primes work WAY better too (thank God) with none of the focus issue that plagued me with the K10 and the K20. And that shutter sound... does 'sensually precise' cover it?

To the lady who also bought from T-Dimension: They kept me well informed and I would definitely buy from there again. Excellent, very fast service. No nasty import/entry surprises either. Hope you travel similarly. You're going to really, really like the camera. Nogster
