Why I Still Shoot Pentax

So you are accusing me of being hostile and aggressive when I'm being honest, and that I have a problem with that as do some other members?

And when I am like that, that's why the mods step in? And you like that solution...

And in no way are you being passive aggressive? And craftily and insultingly baiting me? So that I have to defend myself and then I'm the bad actor by being aggressive and hostile?

While these comments last, thanks for perfectly illustrating everything I'm saying, I appreciate it.

Again, passively aggressively saying I am not a friendly person?

I was quoted here and all I said was "AMEN" agreeing with the person who made the original statement, which was quoted also but not attributed.

Why single me out?

How would you respond if someone singled you out and implied you were an unfriendly person?

I'm just asking questions at this point. Is that considered "aggressive and hostile?"

Is your comment here all that friendly?

Most every time I participate in a thread or start a thread here, I get jumped by someone passively aggressively starting a fight so that my posts get deleted or my threads get locked.

It's very easy to do, someone makes a borderline insulting snarky comment, I try to defend myself.

So for me the forum part of the experience is a hostile environment best to be avoided.

As an information resource for Pentax it's great, but I access that most times not signed it. It prevents me from trying to be helpful and get beat up for my efforts.

My contribution to the Pentax community can be accessed through my Youtube channel. I read and respond to every comment and help as much as I can.

I hear what your saying Pentax said but Fuji was saying the same things to justify that the put the screen on the XPro3 on backwards...

Lack of some kind of movable screen on the K3 III was just a mistake in my opinion. It limits it's usability, on what is a very capable camera.

Having said all that, touch focus in live view works amazingly well. I really hope all that tech moves into the K1 Mark III some day (while retaining the lunar lander on the back....)

Is Sony REALLY #1 in Cameras?

There's very few people on YT I won't watch. He's the one... :)

I base all of my camera system decisions on the prints I make and what they look like. And my print judgements are based on working for over 30+ years in a professional darkroom so I kinda know what I'm looking for. I think most of my regular YT viewers know it's really to the point of an obsession for me.

So when someone reviews a camera, I always wonder what are the most important things this person is basing their conclusions on. For Toneh it seems it's how much money he can make if he makes a video about it and says something stupid to create a buzz. (Fro is almost as bad.)

Another example is DPreview TV. Overall they do a really good job for "drive by reviews." They compare different cameras using the same criteria, but they don't use the cameras for an extended period of time trying to actually do anything serious with them. So you get a very broad overview of A vs B vs C, which is somewhat useful, but as with most things in life the devil is in the details and you have to use the cameras for a while to find out what they're really like to live with. (Makes you wonder how any marriages survive as well... ;) )

For Pentax specific reviews this forum is one of the best sources for fair and in depth information on Pentax cameras and lenses. As we all know it's a system you have "to get it" to be happy with, and most don't have a clue what it's about.

How Pentax Ruined Digital Photography...

I've never rented a camera or lens in my life.

Every camera or lens I have tried I have done so with the intention of keeping and using if it met my needs, requirements and expectations. Sadly most have failed. When the system I'm experimenting with fails to meet my needs, I end up going back to a few stalwarts (for me) namely Fuji and Pentax.

I share my experiences on my Youtube channel honestly and sincerely.

Interestingly, other much bigger channels are just given or loaned gear by various manufacturers, use that gear for a week or two, never intending to actually use the gear and make a few positive videos and nobody seems to think there's any problem with that... yet for some reason what I do is criticized frequently.

I understand. I actually made a new channel because I tried to change the format of PHOTO UNIVERSE and there were a lot of complaints.

I try to spend more time out photographing in the field on my new channel, you might like it: Edward Thomas - YouTube

I'm headed up the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon this next weekend, so I should be posting a few videos about the trip and the photography next week.

Either way, thanks!

I remember a few years back I was in a forum where the moderators were brutal in keeping the threads pinned down to exactly the topic they were started on. It was the most boring forum experience ever.

I can't tell you exactly the difference between organic thread drift and true hijacking, but I know it when I read it. Organic thread drift is good, hijacking is bad. :)

Who are the photographers on youtube using Pentax?

Honestly, I thought my reviews were awful... they were really about how the cameras fit for the work I was doing or wanted to do, so they were very centered on my own needs. In fairness though I tried not to call them reviews. :) I'm much happier with my 10 month user report on the XPro3, I thought that was actually useful for someone to watch with a bit of decent and unique content I hadn't seen or read about elsewhere. Personally I never want to just go over the same stuff as everyone else, but try to add to the knowledge base somehow.

I'm not overly fond of the Northrup's presentations either. That's what you get when the presenters are trying to succeed at youtube and not just doing what they do and bringing you along or at least that's what that feels like. Thomas Heaton is an example of a guy I think who has struck a decent balance between growing the channel and keeping it organic or at least maintaining that illusion or feeling that it's organic. You feel like he'd be doing it whether he filmed it or not.

I'm glad your enjoying my new direction. I'm definitely enjoying making those videos for sure. It's awesome to hear that someone is appreciating them! Thank you!!!

That's a big part of it.

And why everyone absolutely should try to support the channels they enjoy as much as they can. It's a grassroots thing and supporting the smaller channels (<100,000 subscribers) is the only thing helping them make more content you like.

I am trying to build my channel now on Large Format Film, the travel/art aspects of photography including darkroom fine art printing, and a bit of digital which right now is mostly Fuji with my Pentax bag waiting for the K3III release. But the topics I'm covering are the topics I'm interested in and not picked because they will set my channel on fire. (obviously)

If I added a Canon Rebel and a few lenses and dumped the Fuji and the Pentax I could increase my channel views and subscriptions by a factor of 10 easily. but I enjoy the Fuji's (and the Pentax's) I don't enjoy shooting Canon's. But I also don't enjoy spending 60 hours a week making videos that no one's watching either...

Affinity Photo is my go to PP software. I used to be a Photoshop Instructor. It's the best Photo editing program I've used, and I've tried most of them looking for a Photoshop replacement when they went up in smoke.

But I actually like Affinity better then Photoshop and wouldn't go back to Photoshop if Adobe gave it to me for free...

Pentax is a classic camera company...

The Sony AF is like magic. People who shoot Sony leave it on continuous AF for everything, it's that good. But the rest of the camera feels unfinished. (A7r3/4/c is what I have experience with.) In bulb mode they revert to 12 bit raw. I think in continuous 12fps as well. You can't get information on an external monitor in 4k, but you can in 1080p. When making solo video content in 4K there's no way to know if the camera is recording from in front of it. No tally light options at all. (Remember, Sony's are supposed to be among the best hybrid cameras.) There's a ton of lenses for Sony and they either suck or are expensive and sometimes they suck and are expensive. Most have issues of one kind or another. The Zeiss 24-70mm F4 has a mixed reputation and suffers from sample variation. But the focusing mech is glued and sometimes un-glues itself. It's an $800 repair through Sony for a $1000 lens which really should be covered as a manufacturing or design defect. And then color science leaves a lot to be desired.

At the end of the day, Sony was too much of a VCR company and not enough of a camera company for me.

I saw it as a kid. It was displayed down a long dark corridor, and then the closer you got to it, this world faded away and the guys in the painting became real in their world. I was 12 and didn't know crap about anything, but I do remember that sensation. Also everyone around me was quiet, like in church, and in awe.

Now there's kids on their cell phones, sitting on the chairs 10 feet from it. Civilization as we knew it is so over. Just get Banksy to spray it, who cares?

We went past the point of "too much is not enough" for most photographers a while ago. The cutting edge features in cameras today are only possibly useful to a handful of photographers getting paid to cover the Olympics.

Sell people on the idea that everything they shoot needs to be at Toneh f1.2 on a FF, and then eye af becomes really important as the DOF barely covers from the end of the eyelash to the eyeball... Marketing genius.

In a craft and profession that I'm still learning after almost 40 years, human nature says that most would rather let "auto" and the computers fast track them to decent results. And of course they have Luminar AI, Toneh f1.2 and don't even have to be there. (As opposed to f8 and be there.)

You have to have the courage to draw the line somewhere, resist temptation, and be real with yourself. For me the Pentax K1 is enough. My brief time with the Sony A7r 3/4 taught me that. They went too far, to a place that is soulless, like being inside the Matrix. The steak doesn't taste great if you know it's not real. Reality is hard, and learning is always difficult, but the rewards are great. There is no shortcut to excellence in anything. Never has been, never will be. (Everything that's wrong with the modern world in two sentences. :))

You can find Albert here:

Nice guy, nice presentation.

And thanks for the follow.

A lot of Youtubers don't know that until you hit around 35 posted videos the search algorithm kinda ignores you. Albert would get a lot more subscribers if he posted more videos. It's hard though. I started a new channel with just my name Edward Thomas, instead of Photo Universe, back in August because my content and direction had changed so drastically I wanted to start over. Posting everything I could post (that was still of interest to me, not just "I need to post so I'm posting fluff" or worse ) I think I'm at 14 videos so far.

You can find that channel here with mostly the same stuff as Photo Universe:
