I'm still on the original Sony a7r. With all its limitations around slow auto focus & shutter shock it still meets my needs so no plans to upgrade. This was shot in the v&a museum in London. A7r + Zeiss Loxia 21mm. Reflected by Illogical., on Flickr

I went from Pentax K5 a few years back to Sony A7r due to the size and extra resolution. Some people mention that a mirrorless camera + zoom negates the size benefits which is true, but stick a small pancake lens on an a7 and its really a tiny FF camera. So its becomes a flexible system, it can be small if you chose lenses wisely but not with a 70-200 F2.8 zoom.
The downside of the Sony system used to be the eye watering price of lenses. This is not such an issue now as there are now many lenses in the lineup which are both good and low (ish) price. But for the fest few years of the system the lens lineup was limited and quite expensive.

Never had any issues using m42 lenses in my a7r. I have a Takumar 55 1.8 & 50mm f4 macro, both lenses work perfectly (although MF only).

Cheers John. I think you are right, it looks like OM. The seller has a load more OM gear up for sale so this would make sense. I don't understand why they did'nt try it out on the OM-10 they had listed!

Looking at a lens on ebay but seller can not confirm the mount.
I'm unable to be 100% sure from the pictures if its K-mount so wondered if anyone could assist (already asked for additional pictures and this is what the seller sent me).

so reading the link above it sounds like the 85mm has a fully automatic diaphragm. However from the pictures of the lens its unclear to me. There is a Button at the base so I assume this is either the button to cock the semi automatic diaphragm or possibly the Auto/Manual switch (as I have a similar switch on my Super Takumar 55mm).
Picture attached just in case anyone has the Auto Version and can clear this up for me :-)

Thanks Dave. So it sounds like there will be no real downside to having an auto as oppose to super takumar?

I've just hit the button and purchased a Auto Takumar lens. I assumed it functioned the same as my super takumar 55mm but just noticed it's listed as having a semi - auto diaphragm. I'm now uncertain if the operation of this will be different to my super takumar lens?? (I'll be using this on mirrorless so any advice much apprechiated)???

If you are happy with MF then have you also looked at older MF lenses. The Takumar 85mm must be around the same price range (I have a 55mm and love the results).

This was my thought as well Mike. I like the emptiness/negative space of the open water on the right of the frame and intentionally cropped as a letterbox. Never thought of cropping as square until mentioned but will give it some though (always good to have some CC :))

Taken on NEX-7 with Tamron 10-24 (K mount). Due to no aperture ring on this lens the adapter has an open/close function to set the required adapter (as you may guess its not exactly precise but when shooting UWA I just dial it in mid way and results are normally pretty good). halcyon by mde.., on Flickr

Yep agreed with this statement. The A7/A7r is significantly lighter and smaller than most DSLR systems and there will be lost of people (like myself) who want this portability that DSLR's currently don't offer. I have a friend who sold all his FF canon gear and now shoots A7r and I am planning on doing the same (although I will keep my FA43 and Takumar 55 to shoot on the A7). If Pentax had a good mirror-less offering then I would definitely consider it as an option (unfortunately I don't see the K01/Q system as meeting my requirements).
So in answer to the question - Are SLR's dying? My view is I don't think so and there will always be photographers who want a SLR, but the mirrorless market is likely to be a massive growth area over the next 10 years. |

I see what you mean. Seems to vignette quite a bit. ---------- Post added 10-20-14 at 10:27 AM ----------
Looks pretty good. Does it work wide open or have the same vignette issues like the Super Tak? To be honest I can't see myself shooting 28mm wide open, but good nice to know in advance if the lens has any drawbacks.

cheers for the reply. Good to know it works on FF
I think I'd have bought the lens anyway to use on my K5 but nice to use it on both cameras :-)

I'm thinking of buying a SMC Takumar 28mm. I will use it on my K5 but have pretty much committed to upgrading to an A7/A7R next year and wondered if anyone has experience of this lens on the A7/A7R?? I have read on some forums that the corners are not great so would be interested in anyone's experience :-)
