Mic recommendations for the K-5?

I also use an Azden SMX-10 it's an incredibly great microphone for its low price. It's not bulky to carry, has an efficient shock mount and is phantom powered by the camera.
Here is some examples of K-5 + Azden SMX-10 videos i have shot. It's mostly in french, sorry.

There are some added sound effects but you can hear the in-sounds and dialogues.

(here first concert and ITW, you can actually see the microphone in the interview, used as a hand mic, which is not practical :p )

It still capture a little bit the SR sound from the camera though. BTW, both K-5 and K-01 have a very good limiter, i ve never got saturations even in concerts situation.

If the K-5 had full manual controls in video mode, it would have killed the Canon 5D. I still pray for a firmware update, or a hack...

Change bitrate for Pentax video mode?

I don't understand what Pentax were thinking: adding full video manual controls but taking the video IQ several steps backwards from the K-5 through compression. The motion jpeg files were huge that's true but at least you couldn't complaint about their quality. I wish they could give us the option of uncompressed or barelly compressed very high quality video. I agree with the OP, it seems possible through firmware update. But that's not the first time i see oddities with their firmware choices: another example is the pixelmapping in the K-5 working only in video if you first open live-view in photo-mode then switch to video mode. HELLOO ! 100% software issues.

Because i am on a budget ? The K-5 video quality is outstanding, i expected the K-01 to be an improvement over it.

Just blows my mind how people reply to a thread without having any help to bring.

Hi, i ve just received my K-01, which i've bought especially for video. Now, i am too really disappointed with video quality. I have some compression artifacts showing on some frames. I ve never got anything like that with my K-5. Here's 2 frames from a full manual video @ 720p 25fps, shuter speed: 1/50, 800 Iso. SR was off, Shadow correction OFF, highlight correction OFF. I was panning, i expected rolling shutter jello effects but not this. Does anyone got awful artifacts like this ? or is my unit's faulty ?

+1 I've just bought the K-01 especially for its manual video features that i can use natively with my k-mount lenses. It is very close to be an awesome video camera. Just lacking a tilt screen, a lcd-viewfinder attachment and full HD monitoring in HDMI out. I really hope too the K-xx line will improve their filmmaking capabilities.

Wow, it works for me as well. This is indeed the evidence this should be fixed through firmware. Are they even aware of the issue ? This trick is so inconvenient, lol. Unbelievable.

You said everything i wanted to say about video. I Use my K-5 a lot in video production, it has its disavantages but the image quality is awesome. Pentax can reach the level of Canon easily in that field, it's a certainty. Just bring the full manual controls, focus peaking, full monitoring and stuff !

Thank you very much :)

Here is the second episode. Here we can see it's been very difficult to get the right exposures... anyway, i think it's a bit better than the previous one. I used a 49mm diameter magnifying glass adapter with my Pentax-A 50mm f1,7 and my DA 35mm f2,4.

I,ve been in the Philippines, there in the malls, lot of brand had its own store: Toshiba store, Case Logic store, Canon store, Sony store, Nikon store, Samsung store, Apple store, Yamaha store, Samsonite store, Asus store and so on. Of course, no Pentax store...

I ve found Pentax equipment in only one general photographic shop there. I've been visiting a lot of them. I was surprised that even in Asia...

Does K-01 sensor overheat?

Yeah, that's why i film only in 720p with the k-5, it doesn't overheat that fast. Now i just ignore the warning sign, it never turned off by itself (but i do, turning it off between shots).
i do often film more than 25g of rushes in one session in 720p and it seems to be ok. Sometimes i wonder if the heat warning sign is accurate...

EDIT: oops, i ve deleted by accident my post which was in #21:

lol. He did told me that Nikon is probably the most reliable DSLR manufacturer nowadays, in terms of pure photography. :p
But, hey, he might be right; for what i know, Nikon D800 and D4 are kick ♥ss cameras.

He was talking about 100% crops displaying in Photoshop (i emphase that words since it might have some reasons) using a calibrated screen.

Today, i visited a photo store to see if they got Pentax equipment. He only got 2 zooms, 1 standard 18-55 and one high end DA 16-50 selling at a high price. We started to talk about the brand and what he told me would have make any fanboy cringe (i am not a fanboy, but i do love Pentax so a part of me was buthurt).

He said Pentax might never reach the level of Canikon anymore since the gap is now too huge. He bet that Ricoh will let Pentax down within 5 years due to this poor rentability. He recognize the great build quality of Pentax cameras, but wouldn't recommend Pentax against a Nikon or a Canon DSLR. "a WORLD of difference, even in optical performance". He also told me the processor performance of a Nikon 3100 is better than the K-5, which surprised me since i always doubted that.

What makes me feel blue about this is since we all experienced some well-known issues of Pentax cameras (such as AF, eg), what have said this professional with 30 years in the field might have some truth in it. Now, i know performances of the camera aren't everything in photography(eg Cartier Bresson pics aren't always even "sharp") but they can be helpful for sure in some situations (quick AF, etc).

I hope Ricoh will prove this seller wrong because i love my K-5, its IQ, its ergonomic, its size, its retro-compatibility...
He had no doubts whatsoever about what he said... for him it's no hope for Pentax anymore...

Hi,
I haven't taken the time yet to proper introduce myself. I am Jonathan, from Belgium. I am a freelance cinematographer and photographer, aiming my career towards documentary. I have a visual arts degree and still love to free-hand draw or paint.
I have been shooting since the 80's with cheap range finders, 110 cameras and so on; then in the 90's with a good old Asahi Pentax Spotmatic in photography school. I migrated to digital using a Nikon D70s for a while after some wandering in post-productions and visual effects industries, education and rock and roll. Then i got back to photography using some compact, easy to take on the go like Optio 50 and later Optio M60 (great little camera). Lumix FZ-45 too... which i sold to buy, one year ago, the k-5. I really love Pentax for all the good reasons and i am happy to have discovered this huge community.

I don't feel like embedding pictures right now, So I invite you to take a look at my pictures on my flickr page:

Cheers! :)

Hi,
here a new series' channel i have launched about early 80's electronic game devices. I want it to be cinematographic and funny in the same time, like surrealistic documentaries.
This is the episode 1 and others are in pre and post production. This episode has been entirely shot with my k-5. Even if i wished the k-5 had more manual controls, i managed to get the picture and exposure as i needed for this episode. It is not perfect, but i think it's a good start :D.

It has been filmed in 720p since i don't have enough disk space to do 1080p... 720p is enough, IMHO for web series.

Here what i used (so you will all know i am on a modest budget, lol):
DA 18-55mm f3,5-5,6 AL WR
FA 28-70mm f4
DA 35mm f2,4 AL
A 50mm f1,7
A 70-210mm f4

Azden MX10 Stereo microphone

2x 5500k lights

You can turn caption on as i have added english subs. Voilą :)

 Indeed, that little TM900 has a very clear image. The low light footage were pretty good, imo. I've got a Lumix FZ-45, the Leica lens was awesome and it could delivers pretty neat footage in good lighting condition (the same for stills), but in low light the noise was just crazy red and yellow dots all over the frame. (The FZ-45 is still by my experence a more easy to use video camera than Pentax). I am genuinely impressed by that TM900 example. And of course... cervo-zoom is a feature dslr doesn't have without adding heavy gear.

Thank you. My K-5 never turned off but the thermometer diagram, warning me of some internal heating occurring was appearing in the left corner of LCD screen and the camera was indeed quite warm. So It made me worried to shoot video, especially with the rumors about sensor stains due to overheat... Though that scary rumor has been dismissed with some intensive video stress-tests. I was very disapointed since i have read TONS of reviews, tests and forums before purchasing my K-5 and that was way later that issue was mentioned. That's why this time i do my research :p.

Just to make this clear i didn't bought a K-5 to shoot exclusively video, i just love Pentax and wanted a polyvalent camera doing perfect stills and good video. The ergonomy (as a stills camera) of the K-5 is the best and the price was very nice too. I love my K-5 and wish Pentax will reach the level of Canon in video features. They can (could?) do it, especially with such a good sensor.

Well, as a professional cameraman i know DSLR aren't the best to shoot video, even Canon 5D, especially in term of filming ergonomy. And of course i shoot with camcorders when i work with a company or a tv station. If i could afford it i'd buy a Sony EX3 or even a Z7 as i do prefer filming with the real deal.
But even if we don't like filming with DSLR, we all know the Canon 5D is used a lot in video productions nowadays, for all the good reasons.

The thing is i have a park of Pentax lens and I could manage to have pro result with my K-5 and its awesome Sony CMOS sensor. Doing so, wasting a lot of time doing the "trick" with its auto settings and being frustrated with the overheating. So my question is "Does the k-01 overheat like the k-5?" in this thread talking exclusively about the k-01 video abilities. Because, for me, if it does not overheat, it might still be a good compromise as it is very compact. For me the issue of overheating is bigger than the issue of not having HDMI out in record mode.

Panasonic GH2 is nice and i'd like to have my hands around one but Panasonic is notorious with pixel drops (even on big pro camcorder) and i've seen some on videoclips filmed with the GH2.
