I've never used the k50, but given that you're the kind of person willing to use the same body for so many years I'd go with the k5iis if there's anything it has you think you'd miss. The extra $190 may hurt a little now, but spread out over 5+ years of use it starts to be peanuts. I went from a 7.5 year old k100d to a k5iis once it started heading into the discount pricing territory and for the many years I expect to have it, I've no doubt it was worth it over the k30/50/500 (for me at least, I don't think I could handle being without the top lcd :)).
I don't know though, if you're really eyeing up the k-s2 for it's flippy screen and wifi and you think your k10d will keep functioning another year, waiting for the price to come down might be tempting. Spend your time learning flash photography techniques as you've planned, they'll continue to serve you well after you upgrade.

No, the image quality is not hugely different. Heie did a comparison post (the K-30 is nearly identical to the K-50 internally) where the difference could be seen if you greatly enlarged the output, but not readily apparently otherwise.
What Heie says about his own test between the K-30 and K-5iis:
It depends on your use of your photos. Since you're upgrading from the K10D, I doubt if you are now blowing your photos up to wall-sized posters where you'd see the difference between the 16mp sensor of the K-50 and the 16mp sensor of the K-5IIs.
Also, a bit of unasked for advice: You may want to hang onto the K10D for photography in bright light, outdoors, etc. The rendering of the older CCD sensor has a cult following. It really is different from more modern sensors. More megapixels doesn't always mean the final image is that much better.

The k-5iis produces sharper images, has a better build quality, a quieter shutter, and 14 bits per channel (so you can do a bit more in Lightroom).
If money is tight, I'd say get the k-5iis. Yes it's more expensive, but in 3 years time you'll be thinking "I've got an awesome camera", where as with the K-50 you'll be thinking "i wonder when I'll be able to upgrade"... ;)

If your budget is tight, I would go with the K50. The difference in terms of your use with the K5IIs will not really be used. You will get the greatest use out of the K50's capability. Also, the possible financial bind would not be worth it.

Some how, some way my eyes didn't pick up the "500". Maybe numbers aren't money to my brain without some sort of $ symbol. :)
Jason, I'd go with the K-5 IIs. I've had the K-5 IIs and my wife currently has a K-30 which is essentially the same as the K-50. Having used both extensively, I prefer the K-5 IIs because of the physical buttons and ergonomics, as well as the superior sharpness. Cost aside, the only pluses to the K-50 is the lighter weight and the focus peaking.

My DA*16-50 is currently at CRIS for SDM replacement.
The repair bill = $195 [includes return shipping & 6 mo. warranty]
It was about 6 months beyond end of the warranty period :mad:.
I sent the lens in on July 12th, so it has been gone just over 4 weeks so far.
I got the repair invoice on July 25. The CRIS repair includes a 6 month service warranty.
update 8/18: CRIS just charged my CC, so that means the repair is finished and the lens is on it's way home.
update 8/19: The lens arrived last night. It performs just like new. Auto-Focus is performing flawlessly again. Cudos CRIS!

I had a repair made to my DA 16-50 by CRIS after dropping my tripod and smashing the camera and lens (twice) in one day and for the first time in my career. They were fairly prompt (4 weeks or so even though they had to wait for spare parts to come in) though with the Ricoh takeover I would check about the availability of spare parts before sending it in.
The lens seems to work fine now (it wouldn't work at all after the second drop and you could hear the pieces of gears just flying around inside the lens) and the repair, camera included, was less than $250. I don't recall the breakdown in price, but I was astonished at such fair pricing. Our European counterparts seem to have to pay an arm and a leg.
So, no problems here with respect to CRIS's ability to get the job done right.
