Thanks Racer for posting the link.

I can just imagine riding that thing in the Flying Millyard. I have a strong feeling that opening the throttle suddenly would either result in a hard to control wheelie....or a hold on tight, while the torque of the engine during acceleration....feels like its about ready to yank out my arms of their sockets.

One thing for sure....it would be a...... memorable .....ride.

 What are the chances.....Fords are common vehicles, but for both to be a 4 door '61 Ford Fairlane with a 3 on the tree.....:D

Manitoba changed the driver license regs the year after I got my license in 1965. In early 1966 they announced that there would be a separate motorcycle test and those who were using their old manual transmission license (like me) for driving a motorcycle, would have to meet with driver licensing people at the local motor vehicle branch, which called and made an appointment to meet.

I rode my motorcycle down to the office, and met with the man. He asked me how long I'd been riding a motorcycle, I said a year. He asked me if I had any accidents, I replied no. He then asked me some driver questions....about right of way, speed limits in school and hospital zones, etc. I answered them correctly and he gave me the new, now separate motorcycle license.

I still have my provincial motorcycle license...and still occasionally ride my son's BMW G/S motorcycle. I haven't lost the knack of riding a bike, although in the past almost 60 years, I will say, motorcycles have vastly improved. :D

Looked at this pix again, and noticed the driver of the '63 split window Corvette does the same thing I do, when parking in a lot. I look for a spot where I can 'protect' my vehicle. In this case, the Vette driver parked his car at the end of the lot on one side, and the tractor on the other.

I do the same, with my Chevy, albeit my Chevy is a bit different than the lovely Corvette....I have a mere '20 Chevy Traverse SUV.....but I still like to protect it as much as I can from damage from other's.....

Some might say I'm too particular, but I have had dents put in doors by careless parkers.

I can imagine. :D

My half liter 1978 Yamaha SR 500....a 500cc single cylinder , 4 stroke engine, has about 5 pages of starting instructions, a decompressor (a valve lifter mechanism). and a little window at the the cylinder head, which indicates when the engine is at TDC ....all needed to turn it over and hopefully start the boom...boom...boom of the engine. :D

It is kick starter only, the Yamaha 500cc single, whether in the SR, XT or TT version, and you had to get the knack to fire it up. I'm a big guy ..... and when I start my 500cc single, I lift myself up and use the combo of my weight and what strength I have, to give it a good, solid kick start...to get things rolling. It took me about two weeks plus to get the knack, when I first bought it new, in 1978.

I can only wonder....and with a chill going through me, how one would manually start a pre 1910, 4 cylinder, 28 liter 4 stroke engine with a hand crank.

We had a big year in southern and central Manitoba, (saw quite a few) for Great Gray Owls about 2014 or so......then I haven't seen one since. Think they come to southern Manitoba about every 11 years...something to do with the vole cycle someone told me. So for us, possibly 2025 winter will be a good year. I'm ready with my K5 and Sigma 150-500. :D

They usually stay in their more northern reaches....of northern Manitoba and NW Ontario....in other years....for our Great Grays. Magnificent bird.

Wonderful photography of the Great Grey Owl, which BTW, is the provincial bird of Manitoba....where I live. I generally only see them in certain year cycles, but when I do, what a treat to see this magnificent creature.

Thanks Mark, Something for me to look into. I think this would be a good option when we are traveling, as TV in hotel rooms as TV is usually basic, and podcasts, internet radio would be more interesting to listen to. I never knew this, thx for the info. and link.

I understand it was a complicated design and manufacture. Ford was no doubt very ambitious and the few I've seen, mostly at car shows have impressed me....with the look and also the concept of having a hard top convertible as opposed to the fabric type.

Our family Ford Country Sedan, station wagon was a dark green with a yellow stripe running alongside the side panels.

When you mention your dad's '61 Ford Fairlane, that was the same type of car ('61 Fairlane, 4 door sedan) I learned to drive in and take my driver's license.

As you know the 1961, was the last of the full sized Fairlanes....and the car I used had non power steering, non power brakes and a manual (3 speed on the tree) transmission...also with the Ford 223 cubic inch, straight six engine.

Parallel parking with a heavy car with manual steering wasn't easy, and I'm sure I put some muscle on by biceps, just practice parking that beast.

Back in the '60's when I got my license, our province had two basic licenses. One was for driving manual transmission cars, trucks and motorcycles and it was the 'manual' license. I got that one.

The other was for automatics and you took the test with an automatic car. With an automatic license, you could only drive an automatic car, no manual transmission car, no trucks, no motorcycles.

My first car, after a series of 1960's European and one Japanese motorcycle....was a '61 VW Deluxe, Type 1. For me it was a great first car, as it was reliable, durable and handled well, after one big tweak I added. I was 18 and drove the @#$# out of it....and had few dollars to run it.

Your '58 Ford Skyliner that was quite a car. I have seen the Skyliner hardtop go up, and then disappear into the Ford(s). Really quite a marvellous mechanism for the time.

Your 352 V8 would be the first year of the Ford FE big block and being the interceptor engine cranked out around 300 hp, if memory serves.

I like the '58 Ford body style the most of Ford designs from '55-'60. My parents bought new, a '56 Fairlane with the 312 cube/225 HP automatic and traded that car in on a '58 Ford Country Sedan wagon, with the 292 V8 and 3 on the tree manual transmission.

The '58 Ford had 2nd generation T-Bird (squarebird) design cues....which appealed to me.

I think your right about the outside exhaust system Ron.

Think it was first offered for the '65 Corvette....and then, only with the big block 396/ 425 horsepower engine.

The big block Chevy V8 (Rat motor) was first offered in the 1965 model year, for different Chevrolet cars, including the Corvette, and if memory serves me, starting in February of 1965.

Wonderful photograph.

Reminds me of a something out of a '60's Hammer Studio horror film....one dark and stormy night.....just before some weary travelers ask the Count for overnight accommodation. :D

Beautiful bike. I wish I had kept mine. It would of been nice to go for local rides on my old J.C. Higgins. Think my parents bought it for me, around 1960, when I outgrew my previous bicycle, which was an English made Glider.

Both the Glider and the American made J.C. Higgins were very reliable and durable...good thing as when I was young, they ended up being high mileage, with all the riding I did. :D

BTW Paul, I like that late '60's Chevy 4 door sedan in one of your pix. Most car guys like either older 2 door hardtops or 2 door post sedans to modify....but they're not that easy to come across anymore.

Nothing wrong with a 4 door post sedan, after all many of the highest performance cars back in the '60's....were 4 door post sedans, with heavy duty suspension, heavy duty cooling, high performance engines and heavy duty transmissions.....the police highway patrol cars.

Up here, Mounties had cars like late '60's Chevy , Mopar, Ford.....4 door post sedans....with all that heavy duty equipment I have listed...and with 427 (Chevy), 440 (Mopar) and 428
(Ford) V8 engines.

And of course the same thing was true of state highway police cars, back then.

A couple of decades ago, one regular car at local hot rod shows, was a Geo Metro.....with a high performance Chevy 454 cubic inch (7.4 liters) V8 crate motor in it. Basically from what I can recall, the engine, transmission and rear drive axle had been installed on a custom frame....and the GEO body was mounted onto it. Think it was a convertible, not sure though.

With that power to weight ratio, I just couldn't imagine the sensation you would get, by flooring the gas (putting the pedal to the metal). I would rather just watch from a significant distance. :D

I think cars like this are built strictly for the Wow factor. Interesting to look at, but not sure many would want to drive one. Or maybe that is just me.

Also some of those era Chrysler Imperials had cool headlights....sort of four stand alone, if my memory serves.

A high school buddy bought a 10 year old Imperial back in the late '60's, and I recall going for a hair raising ride in it. He was a bit of a wild driver....and there were 6 of us....all teenage males....in the car....we were all glad when we finally got out....and all of us making mental notes not to go for anymore rides  with him.

The car had a 413 cube wedge head V8....heavy car, but a fair amount of punch.

Congrats Mark.

About a year ago, I bought a new Apple 13. My previous phone was a Nokia I had for about 14 years....so I called it my Nokia 14.

The difference in advanced technology that enabled my new Apple to do so many things that I could not do before with my old cell phone was astounding....to me.

I used my old phone just for making phone calls and texting .

The Apple 13 has made a significant difference in life....and yes, I'm sure its technology suffers, compared to the latest and greatest.

I don't leave home without it. :D

As far as photography goes...both still and video....it really is a competent little camera...to have as a daily carry. It is no K1, but as a small, easily toted still/video...it is hard to beat.

Good advice, I also tend to take special interest cars at outdoor auto shows, the same way you do. For the same reasons. I usually use either my Pentax 24-70 F 2.8, my 12-24, my 100 macro or sometimes...if have the creative urge....my 10-17 fisheye...usually at 17mm where there is less distortion.but still can get nice effect.

The Buick 401 nailhead V8 was a great engine. Lots of torque and durability.

There was a famous dragster that was run by TV Tommy Ivo way back when. His race car had 4 Buick 401 V8's....I never saw it run, but I read that it was quite a performer.

Tommy Ivo was also a well known Hollywood actor.

Looking for Advice from Monochrome owners

greyscale says:

" In your first post, you asked if Monochrome owners wished they'd bought a regular K3iii and convert to B&W. My experience has been the exact opposite, from the very beginning. I have multiple colour cameras, mostly Fujifilm with a set of nine lenses, and bought into Pentax (and four lenses) specifically for the Monochrome. I would never have bought a colour K3iii, and now I barely use the colour cameras that I already own. I do still produce colour photos sometimes – I just do it with black and white files."

I know what you mean.

I started SLR photography in 1968 with the purchase of a Pentax S1a, as a requirement of my job in a publishing company.

For about 3 years I took nothing but B+W, mostly Tri-X 400 ASA. I enjoyed looking at the developed B/W prints. There was always something about B+W that appealed to me....it seems 'grittier'....more real life than colour.

I still do a lot of B+W photography now, but with my K1, K5, Ricoh GR 11....just switching to B+W using the mechanism for taking pics in black and white....or converting after in my K1.

At this point I have a lot of cameras, but I am seriously thinking about getting a K3 Monochrome. Very appealing to me.
