A very interesting read, thanks for sharing. I think since 3D Pop is a perceptual thing, I sometimes wonder if we all see it the same or if it is a learned trait to see it or attune to its presence? Like those old mosaic's they had at kiosks in the malls in the 80's, where you had to half cross your eye's to see the dolphins or whatever hidden in the pattern. LOL! Ok ok, I should not joke like that (especially after glancing at the parody article you linked to) because I know this is a serious subject to you, and to me and others as well, I just can't help myself sometimes.
I see you mentioned chromatic aberrations briefly in reference to the LTD's... I would like to add some tangential idea's to that train of thought. A good friend of mine used to run a camera repair business years ago in the film era. We used to talk a lot about what made a "good lens". One thing he noted, as he had contracts with local newspaper reporters was that since most of their print media was black and white, they had an interesting preference for certain old lenses, including some early Nikkor's and Vivitar's... I had tried some of these lenses myself on color and slide film and found them to be "ok" but nothing special. My friend postulated that though they were "meh" for me, they were known to color fringe particularly in the magenta spectrum and most likely added some extra "3D Pop" via higher contrast edges to B&W images.
So, to add some food for thought, mayhaps similar but as yet undefined cases like the above are why sometimes a more imperfect design can yield a more pleasing result in specific use-case scenarios. What we jokingly refer to as "pixie dust" might just be a preferred type of imperfection.

Finally got around to trying my old 17mm Tak Fisheye on the K-1 with M42 adapter... I was thinking about getting the Samyang 14mm some day, but ya know what, with the lens profile in PS... I think I am going be to OK with just de-fishing the 17mm for as little as I will use it. Great old Takumar colors, and even a nice star flare similar to the DA15. ;)
(In full disclosure, mine isn't even the "SMC Takumar" label, just the "Fisheye Takumar". Not sure if there really is a difference, because when you look at the front element, it obviously has a robust SMC coating.)
17mm ISO 100 1/180th F8
The lens profile was just used straight up, I didn't do any extra de-fishing with the sliders, but I could have if I wanted total correction...in the end, I decided I liked the effect as is and decided to leave it be.

Spectacular flower Frederic, you really should have entered that contest. Fix your spam filter or whatever happened!
And hey, go easy on the carbs, I think I'm putting on weight just looking at that Pennoni! Yum! ;)

Congrats Paul! I dearly loved my DA*300mm, it's hard to convey it's strong points, you just have to shoot one. As you found, the IQ is special like a LTD lens. I also liked mine with an extension tube on it for chasing small stuff at a little distance like bees and butterfly's.
If you are having any second thoughts or remorse over not getting the HD D FA 150-450mm, I'll alleviate you of that right now, because if you say the DA*300mm is heavy, oh dear lord, you definitely would not enjoy the big zoom. I had one and it's a huge beast compared to the DA*300mm. Don't get me wrong, the IQ off of the big zoom is awesome and the AF is definitely better than the DA*, but you pay the price in weight. It's funny, because the DA*300mm was even smaller and lighter than my Tamron Di 70-200mm F2.8 and I would grab the DA* more often just because of the weight. Yeah, the AF isn't exactly up to modern standards, but it's adequate and accurate. Great first post with it, looking forward to more.

Wow, that's great! Glad you kept it, I missed the back-story. So are those 2 images cropped, or does the FET really come that close to filling the MF sensor? (I understand most MF sensors are still crop also, but you know what I mean).
Thanks!

Nice work from the FE 17mm!
Still have mine... was more than a little surprised to see you listing this lens (unless you have an extra one) in the Marketplace. Fun lens and sharp!

This is super sharp with really nice rendering, and amazing for handheld.
Don't tell Frederic, but it almost makes me want to cheat on my Soligor 20mm F2.8 CD Auto lens...

That is great news! Looking forward to a test shot or two from you!
Just a couple more Tamron 24mm teasers, heh.
This one is wide open @ 2.8 and still silly sharp at the left and right edges where anything is in the focal plane.
These really should have been F4, but I was goofing around and wanted something to check wide open performance in low light.
Sony ILCE-7RM5 E 24mm F2.8 Tamron Di III F051 @ ƒ/2.8 24.0 mm 1/25 iso100
Another wide open shot at 2.8, portrait with an UWA no less! Corrections didn't seem to affect sharpness at the edges.

Wow, that's a heckofa deal, hope you like it as much as I do! Congrats. Just keep the level indicators in the viewfinder in the neighborhood of level, and it's all good, like most any UWA.
I guess that means I have to throw out another 24mm teaser, heh.

PS: for what it's worth, the bell post was actually leaning forward like that. I think it's intentional to work against pulling the rope or something.

A comparison shot of the same workshop that I shot earlier with the 70-200 2.6 GM II, now with the Tamron 24mm 2.8 Di III.
The Tamron seems to hold up well in the sharpness department, even with the bright light coming from the doorway to the left, it didn't flare or fog the shot.
Sony ILCE-7RM5 E 24mm F2.8 Tamron Di III F051 @ ƒ/4.0 24.0 mm 1/20 iso500
This lens really punches well above it's weight.
I almost didn't buy it because it was "too inexpensive to be any good" but AlphaBlog Marc's review kept me interested enough to follow through and buy one.
I think he was right.

Early settlers' cabin... playing with the Tamron 24mm DiIII, seems to do ok as long as you keep the level indicators straight in both directions.

I know how you feel... but you had good instincts, so I like what you did with the last two pictures. You've got plenty of nice, diffused light, but no colorful landscape to play with. Hence, B&W was a great answer to the blah day riddle.
Congrats on having the drive to go shoot something at times like these. That is 99% of the battle right there! Well done!
PS: I noticed the last shot is F16, so did you manually blur the edges? I liked the tunnel vision effect well enough, am just curious.

You captured her spirit quite well. The technicalities are overrated, and these are just fine. What a little charmer.
Did she chimp the back of the camera after she hit the shutter? I love it when kids do that... and ask, where's the screen?
