Looking at a fast f2.8 zoom. Either a 17-50, 18-50, or 17-70mm. I know the 17-70's are 2.8-4 but they'll work for what i need them for.

So basically, the SDM is worn out and likely to get worse and possibly quit all together.

Can you explain the issues with your 50-135 a little better? What do you mean that it needs to be "woken up" at times? How often does this happen and what's the solution when it does?

If anyone is willing to unload one, let me know. Would prefer a Sigma with HSM. But would take a Tammy or Tokina also.

It really really sucks. Saved a long time to buy my first piece of premium glass, and had it less than two weeks before this happened.

Final update. After two months in Precision's hands, the lens was finally returned and deemed un-repairable. They waited fir a couple parts from Japan and still couldn't get the lens to work right. Give then credit fir trying, but I figured it was a lost cause anyways so it was worth a try. Only being charged shipping.

***UPDATE***

Well, Erick said he's unable to repair it and that Pentax authorized repair is going to be my only option, as a support post that's an actual part of the internal frame of the lens broke and therefore needs a completely new focus/zoom mechanism which the support is a part of. But said that it is at least repairable, and worth fixing if the cost isn't too high. He estimates Precision's charge will be in the neighborhood of $300-$400

Talked with the Pentax guru Erick earlier, and he's gonna have a look-see to find out if it can even be fixed.

That might actually have some truth to it. Luckily for me, I always shoot with the hood on. Or else, at minimum..........the front lens element would have busted into pieces as well. Cause even with a protective U/V filter (which I don't use) the fall was so hard directly on the forward lip of the lens, that wouldn't have saved it.

Yeah, exactly!!!!!! I heard the impact and didn't want to look. When I did, and seen the lens lying on the ground separated from the camera, my first thought was the camera broke. When I picked all the pieces up,I too was very disappointed in that a solid metal bayonet mount on a $1000 lens is screwed into a plastic support.

Screws are all still intact, as they screw into a plastic interior base.

How much was your repair bill, and who'd you have do the work?

Well, the zoom ring became dislodged, and the aperture lever is bent enough it no longer works within the broken mount. All mount screws torn loose from their respective seats as well. I'll be sending it in for repair estimates, but I'm suresI'd be better off just buying a good used one.

Camera took a spill, lens didn't fair to well. nothing internal seems broken or dislodged. All lenses are intact. However, the lens mount literally broke off in my camera as the lens became separated from it's mount. I'm so disgusted, it's heartbreaking. Saved many months to finally own a premium piece of glass, and this...........on just it's second shoot.
