Pentax AFS is normally as good as any other brands, Pentax AFC is less dynamic relative to other brands and that's where adding an image pre-processor helps freeing up some CPU time so that it's more responsive for AF tracking.

I have some Q images that are just as good as my K-1 images even pixel peeping. If the Q sensor resolves all the detail that's essential to the image, then there's nothing to be gained going larger format.

But having a Q and a K-3 doesn't mean there aren't times I reach for my K-1.

As for Amateur Photographer, it's published by and for Amateurs. There's nothing but sensational click bait there. They are to photgraphy what national Enquirer is to news papers. I have no doubt they use the National Enquirers research style. Sit down, 8 guys in a room, take a real news story, drink a lot of beer, come up with the most sensational headline you can with an outrageous story to go with it. All fictional. Pay 10 scientists to use their names "10 Scientists say the bubbles in beer cause cancer." But just pay for their names, not any science. Put it out where the suckers who buy that kind of thing can pick up a copy. National Enquirer has proved, you can make good money that way.

I love reading the headlines just for the creativity displayed.

There's real money to be made pandering to people's biases. Just tell them what they want to here. The truth is irrelevant.

To me, if they were to jump in, they have to keep the K mount. I compare KP and a7II in store a few time, KP size and weight is not far from a7II. If Pentax can apply their black magic and put FF sensor in KP / K3 size body and keep the K mount, Mirrorless or not, I will be very happy.
If they change mount, it is no point to keep buying Pentax for me

The biggest thing about the 21 that is special is you can put the sun in the frame without flare. Try shooting in better light, when the sun is low, and get the sun in the frame.

As a side note, it does feel like DPR takes every chance possible to have a swing at Pentax. Just skimming the first page, I find this, "This means once you reach ISO 1600, unlike most cameras such as the Pentax 645Z, the dynamic range does not drop by 1 EV drop for each 1 EV increase in ISO." If "most cameras" do this, then why not say, oh Fuji?

Hard to read anything over there without a bad taste in the mouth afterwards. Kinda like a cheap wine.

is how sloppy testing really is. People look at the "results" of the test, and think they are getting good data. You're only ever getting good data if the testing is set up correctly. In the case of cameras today, if you ignore the differences in the way the manufacturers set things up, and don't adjust for it, your whole test is compromised.

I feel like a lot of this testing methodology is still living in the film era, when Kodachrome was Kodachrome was Kodachrome, no matter what camera it was run through. Even then you had lens concerns.

Sigh....this just seems so straightforward to me. Why can't anyone get it right? Even some engineers are getting it wrong, because they want to trust the black and white of the data and not check for the human foibles. Humans are doing this testing. Check that first!!!!

What do you mean 36MP mess? That 36MP mess beat Nikon and Sony for image quality. If anything the crop sensor is a overall mess if that is what you are trying to imply. The video compared both with ps and the shots of the K1 without ps still looked as good if not better than KP with ps. Unfortunately there was not a side by side comparison. Also who wants to carry a tripod everywhere?

Hello all,

My name is Perry Wilson. I'm 28yo and work full time as a police officer. I began as a cinematographer for indie films when I was 16. Sicne then I've shot many films and have won a few festivals locally.

Back in my college years I travelled doing portraiture and product photography. I started my career with a 7D and a bunch of Alien Bee Strobes. I then moved on to the GH2 during its hacking days and shot two feature length indie films using the GH2 with old Konvas glass. When I had my first child at 22 I sold all of my gear to pay for hospital bills and gave up photography for a bit. As my child grew I began tinkering with cameras again. But I wanted something small and fun. I bought a GoPro 4 black and quickly modified it with the Ribcage and began using D-Mount glass I had collected over the years. The camera was great for video but sucked for photos. So I sold it and bought an A6000 and some old Minolta glass and Sony lenses. I was back.

Here is a link to some of my old work: Perry Wilson | Flickr

Only problem was, even though the A6000 was "small" I never wanted to carry it with me anywhere. So I sold it and began using my Galaxy S8+ using RAW and lightroom mobile. Why not right? I always have my phone. I bought a DJI Gimbal(which is now the only way Ill shoot video), and got to it. I was cranking out as good of photos as I've ever shot you know minus DOF of course because of the small sensor.

Here are some samples of phone photos BTW 2 kids and a wife now now:

So shooting with the phone was going well until my daughters graduation. I found the limitations. As she walked across the stage I pushed that "shutter button" and BLUR BLUR BLUR. the electronic shutter just couldn't hang. Plus electronic shutters combo'd with a touchscreen shutter button suck.

So I looked for something tiny that would be awesome, with a real shutter, shutter button, and I could carry everywhere. I then remembered the Little Pentax Q. A camera that since its release I have lusted for but never wanted to spend the money on. I did my research and popped on a Q-S1 on Keh. Black with Burgandy grip(only black one they had) So far I love it.

I wanted to see how I could push the camera, and being an ex strobist I started reading about the oddities of the Q in regards to off camera flash. So I set out to see if I could get around the whole 1/125 sync problem because I want HSS, impossible you say? Well Pentax gave us a treat with this camera. Because of the great leaf shutters the onboard flash can sync to 1/2000 which is amazing. So why not use a slave? I grabbed my Yongnuo 560IV and tried it since it has built in slave mode.

BOOM it works. I give you my first shot, of "HSS" on the Pentax Q. Shot at ISO100 SS 1/2000 2.8 with flash set to 1/2 power (will not work on 1/1 power, dont know why must be too slow or something, ive tried down to 5" and still doesn't capture on 1/1) Flash set to top right 2 ft off subject with mini softbox.

Well Im excited to be here. I hope to bring some fun, knowledge, and hopefully more good pics to the forum. I also look forward to seeing all of your work and learning about this amazing little camera from all of you. Till next time...

With all due respect, I'm a believe it when I see it type of guy.

My guess is, there's no software that will match a Pentax K-1 mkII with a non-pentax camera. Why would Pentax put a whole chip in a camera that performed worse than any existing software?

Everyone is acting like Pentax is stupid.

With respect, I think that's an exaggeration... But then, it's highly subjective, and our perspectives are different. Way back when, you described one of my shots as being "mushy" when it had a level of post-processing noise reduction that I personally was very happy with. The same applies here... the noise reduction will please some, disappoint others, and the rest won't care.

That said, I've changed my mind on the basis of my post-processing tests, and would probably go with the K-1 also for IQ alone... though I'd be very happy with either camera, and of course the K-1II offers additional advantages.

What's interesting is, almost nobody complained about this with the KP, but if you compare DPR's high ISO shots for the K-3 / K-3II and the KP, the exact same difference in detail (I call it "a bit", you call it "totally mushy") can be observed.

In all the time the KP has been around, I can only think of one member who decided the KP wasn't for him because of this noise reduction, and - perhaps coincidentally, perhaps not - his discovery was made right after all the discussions about the K-1II's noise reduction kicked off.

Aside from all that, like you I hope that any future Pentax cameras allow for this NR to be switched on and off, or - better still - configurable.

Well, I've been playing around with the ISO 6400 shots in Darktable, and in all honesty, the K-1 cleans up slightly better in post-processing than the K-1II straight out of camera.

With all noise reduction disabled for the K-1II image, I processed the K-1 image to reach approximately the same level of luminance noise reduction, and actually slightly better colour noise reduction. There's not a huge amount in it, but for me, the processed K-1 result is better so far as detail is concerned. Look at the body and arm of the magenta coat - this is where it's most noticeable - and to a lesser extent the red stripes on the shirt and trousers. The K-1II shows slightly blotchy / lost detail here, whereas the K-1 image with luminance and colour noise reduction from Darktable's Equalizer module (using custom settings - not the presets) retains the detail a little better. It's minimal, but it's there.

I think the K-1II is doing a remarkable job for in-camera noise reduction, and if that were on/off switchable or adjustable, it'd be awesome. For those who are prepared to spend time in post-processing, though, I'd say it's possible to squeeze just the tiniest bit more detail out of the original K-1's high ISO files...

The first image below is from the K-1II, and the second is from the K-1 with my processing applied.

i'm amazed to see how much discussion was going on about the details vs noise discussion of the Pentax K1 II, given that the K1 and K1 II largely outperform most cameras and smarphones seen in the field, the only next step in image quality beyond Pentax K1/D850/5DSr being in medium format territory which isn't so common.

That in itself is quite interesting. I know we're discussing the K-1II, but given the accuracy of AF with Sony's mirrorless cameras, you have to wonder how it mis-focused (if that is indeed the case). Did the Sony show that it is, in fact, fallible too - or was this another error on DPR's part? With on-sensor PDAF points, it can't be an issue with AF fine adjustment... :hmm:

I can definitely see some very minor detail loss and "fuzzing" due to NR. But it's going to be highly subjective as to whether it's remotely significant. I appreciate that for you, it is - but I suspect most people won't even notice it.

Looking at the above you really have to ask, which looks more like the original?

Two images
2018-05-30-flowers-9 by Norm Head, on Flickr

Noisy-flower-2 by Norm Head, on Flickr

One softer, smoother, and showing little noise. The other, sharper more contrasty and full of noise. Both come from the same DNG file.

Personally, the problem, only the first one actually looks like the flower in question. The first one. The concept that the image with the most detail regardless of noise is at best the viewpoint of a very small minority. I will not publish or try to publish an image with that level of noise. All the things that make the image look sharper, increased contrast, increased dentition, sharpening, increase the appearance of sharpness, but it's not real, The image has the same resolution it always did. But all those things that increase the appearance of sharpness increase the level of sharpness , definition and contrast of the noise as well. The argument seems to me to be that the noisey appearance should be the default. Why? When you can increase the appearance of sharpness ib post production starting with the flatter image if that's what you want. The argument that the noisey image should be the default is crazy. The default is the default. The only question is can you get what you want out of it? I look at the images above, and the first thing I think is, I can make the image on theft look like the image on the right. I have no idea what's wrong with folks who think there's something in one that isn't in the other.

Which picture you like is completely personal preference, and it makes no difference which you prefer. My point is, you can get both out of a single image, all the raw determines is the starting point. And the assumption that there is detail in one that isn't in the other is just lying. Those determinations could only be made by a person who managed to take two files and get them to match for contrast, definition, sharpening and noise. The stuff that has been produced so far to make a point one way or the other is just garbage. There's just no polite way to put it.
All the folks on here who have tried to convince me they can't get what they want out of K-1 mkII files have me thinking they are pretty much incompetent at post processing. There is more than one way to look at their work. All this pseudo technical mumbo jumbo being tossed around is the work of amateurs including the "testers" over at DPR. The question is not, can I treat my k-1II files exactly like I treat my K-1 files and get the same result. You can't, big deal. You might have to develop some new import presets. But that's all I see.

According to all the self appointed experts here on the forum, my K-1 is sharper than my K-1. I should take my K-1 back and get a K-1. That's exactly what I just proved by the criteria posted. Sounds kinda stupid stated that way don't you think?

I will simply not show or print an image with the noise levels displayed in the second image period. It's a garbage image. Over processed, blown highlights, you name it. That others think Pentax should in some way enable this complete lack of photographic skill is nonsense. Contrast, sharpness and definition applied in PP is not the same as sharpness in the raw file. But all the arguments claiming the K-1 images are sharper have fallen into that trap. It's not about how the files come off the camera in cases like this. It's what you can do with it afterwards.
As for the assertion you want the noise and the detail rather than a more true to life rendering.. fine , show me an image where you think the noisy image is better, I and many others will simply say, we don't agree. It's not technical point. it's a point of preference that has nothing to do with technical abilities of the camera.

DPR turned the K1/K1 II comparison into click bait and Pentax bashing. It's apparent to me, comparing ISO 12800 images and far above the midrange ISO area, in my opinion, the K1 II not holds its own in real world resolution but generates less noise in the RAW file. Much ado about nothing so far as the noise issue is concerned.

It definitely uses the mechanical shutter. It just aligns 4 separate images processed in the Accelerator Unit. The new stuff is, it uses the full data stream from the IBIS system to align the images. Hand motion is actually necessary for this technology to work.

My Report from CP+ 2018

Since Yokohama is an easy train trip from my home, I’ve been to each CP+ since 2013, except for 2014, when the Saturday was snowed off. Each time I go it seems to get a bit bigger and busier.

The organizers explained their plans and objectives for CP+ 2018 last December.
?CP+2018???????????? - ???? Watch
There are 128 exhibitors, up from 121 in 2017. This has meant that most of the booths have become a bit smaller this year, including Ricoh/Pentax. They have a target of 70,000 attendees, up from 66,666 attendees in 2017.

Other interesting information from their presentation was that the foreign media in attendance dropped hugely from 2016 to 2017 by around half. On the other hand male and female attendees in the 20s and 30s increased a lot, especially young women. So this has driven their focus of their marketing this year on first-time photographers and women in particular.

I didn’t have all that much time at the show this year, but I tried to get around to as much as I could.

Ricoh Booth
There was no obvious change in the branding from recent years. It’s clear that Pentax, GR and Theta are positioned as sub brands of Ricoh. The booth itself was a bit smaller than last year, with more space given over to the stage in the middle. Left of the stage was an area devoted to Pentax. An equally large space on the right focused on Theta.

I think they clearly decided to push two things at CP+ this time: Full frame K-mount and Theta. APS-C K-mount, GR and 645 were there but not very prominent, except for in the presentation schedule. There was the DA* 11-18 under glass and some obvious hinting about a new GR, with a poster and stickers to make people register for the new GR Facebook page. I couldn’t get any more info about the 11-18, despite asking.

I could not find any reference to Q or its lenses this time. One of the Ricoh staff was using a Q to document the event, and a few visitors had them, but there was nothing I could see on the booth.

There were a number of presentations, but the one I watched was by Yoshiaki Kobayashi on the K-1 mark 2. He is the photographer who took all the photos used in the brochure and the samples, including the wintry ones from Hokkaido Japan (where he lives) and the summer ones in New Zealand. This was quite interesting and contained a lot of hints about how to get the most out of the new features. I wish I could have stayed for more presentations, but it is really time-consuming to do that.

K-1 mark 2
I was able to try the camera with the new lens, Of course the camera looks exactly like the K-1, so there are no surprises in the design. I tested the hand-held pixel shift function. The first attempt wasn’t successful, but I got a clear and detailed shot on the second. You can hear the shutter going four times, so it is not using an electronic shutter. Once it has taken, it locks up the camera for quite a while processing and saving.

In Kobayashi-san’s presentation, he mentioned that he was getting about a 50% success rate with handheld pixel shift. He knows what he is doing, so bear in mind he would not be attempting impossible shots. He said that the key to success is keeping the shutter speed high and avoiding rotational shake in particular (not 100% sure I understood this part). He also made the point that you can always extract a single raw image if the pixel shift goes wrong, so there is little to lose by trying. Another interesting comment was that results handheld can in certain circumstances be better than on a tripod, such when on a wood deck, bridge or another surface that is slightly moving.

They also had a space where you could test the low light ISO performance side by side with a standard K-1. Checking the results on the screen, you can see that the accelerator unit improves noise noticeably. I tried it at ISO 25,600 and it was a lot cleaner on the new K-1, but perhaps still too much for some people. Repeating the test at 6400 was quite convincing, showing less noise without any strange side effects. I’m not much of a pixel-peeper or int post processing, so you might have a more critical eye than me.

I could not really judge AF myself, but in the presentation Kobayashi-san mentioned the continuous AF improvement and showed some nice bird in flight images. I guess the Pentax Forums review will reveal how much it has really improved.

D-FA 50mm
The lens on the K1 mark 2 when I tried it was the D-FA 50mm. It is fairly big for a prime, like the Sigma, but not as enormous as the recent Zeiss primes. Honestly, I think some of the comments about the size have been a bit over the top. It is bigger than the old 50s, but more or less in line with modern primes from other manufacturers. I still don’t think I would be interested in buy that specific lens, but I came away with part of me wanting it anyway.

Right after trying the Pentax lens, I went straight to the Tokina booth, where they had their own Opera 50mm on display. I’m almost certain these lenses are co-developed. They have the same feeling of weight and balance, and exactly the same hood, which is very Pentax-like, with the filter cut-out. They feel different in the texture of the barrel and the rubber grip material. Because of that the Tokina feels cheaper.

Other booths
I went around the whole floor and it was business as usual for most of the brands. They had larger stands than Ricoh. In particular, the Sony stand was enormous this year. Also, I really got the feeling that Sony is gaining on the other brands, based on the cameras people were holding. I did feel the booth was rather bland, though.

The one I liked most was the Olympus stand this year. There seems to be a trend towards having more educational presentations in recent years, and Olympus had two stages with really practical talks going on. They also seemed to be more obviously targeting female photographers. I think it is a tricky balance trying to appeal to both genders, while not being stereotypical and patronizing about it. Olympus seems to be getting it right by featuring work and talks by female photographers more than the others.

One sad point was that Casio didn’t have a booth this time. I’m not really interested in their cameras, and not many people were looking last year, but I think it is said to see a brand decide not to join, other than the usual too-cool-to-show-up Leica, who never attend.

Overall, it was a not the most impressive show this time, but still fun to go to, and there were some indications that Ricoh is getting back to normal service in terms of product releases.

And why do you think Canon or Nikon don't do such a thing? Why did Canon prosper in the States all those years under a product manager whose mantra was to never reveal future plans?

Because decisions involving millions of dollars are greenlit - or cancelled - by interdepartmental and boardroom battles based on real data modelling, not by the vox populi of the Internet. :)
