Lowepro has a number of pretty small choices - maybe something like an Edit 100/110?

I'm seeing $399 again at Amazon right now (from Samy's Camera) - also available in white (for the first time at this price, I believe).

When the Q came out it was $800 - over $1000(!) if you added the zoom - while it gets good results from it's P&S sized sensor, only someone who wanted lens interchangeablity and REALLY prioritized size would have considered it a good value considering the lower cost competition - similar performing compacts like the Canon G12, or better performing 4/3 or even APS-C sized ILCs.

You are correct that the Olympus sensor (which is actually 1/1.63) is larger - they are different technologies though (CCD vs Backlit CMOS), for whatever that's worth.

Keep in mind that lens roadmaps always include fine print stating that whether "planned" products actually make it to production (or not) of course "may vary in response to market conditions".

The recent heavily discounted prices have had me seriously thinking about the Q too...but I'm coming to the conclusion that once you add the zoom it's no cheaper than the RX100, not nearly as pocketable, and of course outclassed in terms of sensor size.

The fluctuating Amazon price is back on a downward trend, $379.85 now, I think the lowest it's hit so far.

Best Q deal at the moment seems to be from Adorama for $393.75, with the $59.95 "vintage" leather case thrown in free as a "Buy Together" offer.

Sure, but everything is a tradeoff - remember you started out asking about small "pocket" sized cameras!
Maybe you can fit a smaller 4/3 camera body+lens in a coat pocket...but something like, say, an S95/S100 (with smaller sensor, of course) is much more compact and can easily fit in a jeans or shirt pocket - which is "better" just depends on what your priorities are.

A 1" sensor is not bigger than micro 4/3! - sensor size terminology is VERY confusing, the only way to make sense of it is to consider actual sensor dimensions.
1" = 12.80 x 9.60mm = 122.88mm^2
micro 4/3 = 17.30 x 13mm = 224.9mm^2 = 1.83X larger

$411.07 from Amazon now, look at the recent price history - seems like their algorithm is aggressively trying to clear them out, with a drop every few days.

If you want the same angle of view you would get from a 50mm lens used on a full frame/35mm film camera, you would need to use a ~35mm focal length lens on a 1.5X crop factor APS-C body.
On your APS-C body any two lenses with the same focal length will give you the same angle of view.

Well...as I read it that's basically true.
If (all else being equal) you want the same ("normal") angle of view that a 50mm focal length lens gives on a full frame camera, you need to use a (50/1.5) = approx. 35mm focal length lens on that crop sensor camera.
You might check out the Field of View calculators here: http://www.tawbaware.com/maxlyons/calc.htm
What we're saying is it doesn't matter if that 35mm lens is originally designed for a full frame camera or a crop sensor camera - it will give the same results on the crop sensor camera.

Well, I think understanding the effect that focal length, aperture, and camera-to subject distance have on depth of field (and how sensor size/format choice interacts with these variables) is basic knowledge all photographers should strive to get a handle on the fundamentals of, regardless of how confused they might be at first.

The focal length is the focal length - a 50mm lens designed for a full frame camera when used on a 1.5X crop camera will give you the same angle of view as a 50mm lens designed for a 1.5X crop camera - that is, about the same angle of view as a 75mm lens on a full frame camera*.
* - However it will not give you the same depth of field (at a given aperture AND a given subject framing) as a 75mm lens used on a full frame camera would - DOF is dependent on actual focal length - perhaps some of the confusion stemming from what you've been reading relates to this?

A tiny, fun, kick-around camera? - sure.
Something to fill in for a malfunctioning DSLR for work you're doing for paying customers? - I think that's asking too much.
