reducing shake

I appreciate all the responses. I've learned a few things. The pointer to turn off SR while panning is thoughtful. I also wasn't aware of the mirror and SR shutting down when using the 2 second timer. I also appreciate the comparison to shooting a firearm. Though I'm not particularly fond of weapons I have shot an M16 so I know what you're talking about. I will also brace myself against solid objects whenever possible.

Thanks all for your responses :)

reducing shake

Hello,

I've been told that I can increase sharpness in my shots by:

1) Turn off the image stabilizing/shake reduction feature because the shake reduction motor causes minor vibrations
2) Use live-view mode because the mirror in the camera stays in the up position and therefore reduces vibration from having to open and close.

Are either of these things true? Are there any other tips for taking sharp pictures aside from the more obvious use of tripod, and shutter speed?

Thanks

Simple flash question

How much does flash compensate for? If my meter reading says I'm 1.5 stops underexposed and I turn on the flash, does the system know to compensate for exactly 1.5 stops of underexposure?

Understanding zoom distance/range

I'm in the market for a telephoto zoom lens. Before I spend my unborn child's savings on it, I need help understanding the range of a lens relative to its zoom specs. For example, at what maximum distance can a 50-135mm lens shoot a portrait of a person's face? Is there a link somewhere in this wonderful internet world that explains this? If not, would someone please educate me about it? I've already googled up several permutations of the words range, zoom, distance, how-to, etc. but I haven't found anything that answers this question plainly.

The purpose of the lens is to eventually take some pictures of folks dancing in a social dance studio/club. I currently have the kit lens, 18-55 and a fast 50 prime. I'd like to get the 60-250 f4 cause it'll fulfill my long range needs and the reviews for it seems great. However, the dance environment I plan to shoot in will be relatively dark so I'm thinking the faster 50-135 f2.8 might be needed. I just don't know how far 135mm can zoom in on a couple on the dance floor, thus my question.

Thanks in advance!

Hmmm, I counted 3 recommendations for the Tamron 17-50 and 2 For the sigma 30. I will definetely put those two on my shortlist of future lenses to get after spending some time with what i've ordered thusfar. Maybe by then ill have read Understanding Exposure and be able to do right by Mimo (my Pentax's name), pronounced mee-moh as in the mee-moh-rees she'll capture for me to reflect upon years from now when i lay on my deathbed.

So I didnt know the fa50 had a narrow depth of field; actually i didnt even understand the term but i think i get it now from the context of this thread and your awesome advice.

Anyway, Mimo's memory card arrived today...Mimo wont be here for another week or two :( i'll make sure to introduce her to y'all when she gets here.

P.s. I missed the meteor shower this weekend! Ugh, bad planning on my part. Anyone see it?

I would like to share my excitement with the Pentax community on my new purchase. I've been seriously considering a new camera for the past month or so. Naturally I ask my seasoned photography friends for advise. No surprise here, they all suggest either Cannon or Nikon. I have nothing against either models but after a good amount of reading I've decided to go with Pentax. So why'd I ask their advice in the first place right?? Anyway...

I read some suggestions from a thread where another person needed help with getting equipment. She got a free lens from Wheatfield!!! woot, lucky her. A bit of good advice I read was to use a free tool to figure out at what range you normally shoot before you go and plop your $$ on a bunch of lenses. So I bought a used 18-55 kit lens for a little under $100. I plan on getting a wide angle eventually. That saves me a little money compared to buying the K-5 with lens but I end up getting the same thing. Woot!

I'm an avid Salsa dancer and plan on taking plenty of pics of people spinning and grooving in the dim lit dance halls (in fact im going dancing after I post this) so I ordered a FA50 f1.4 too. I read this is the most fabulous fast 50 around! I have no idea how to manually focus but I'll figure it out eventually right =)

Well, thats all. Hope I'm on the right trail. Wish me luck :)
