Shut OFF that auto focus!

You have an AF button right under your thumb. The most useless thing on a Pentax is the AF on the shutter. Ruins a lot of pics.

For instance. Taking wildlife shots. Great opportunity for an amazing shot of an animal in the wild in some brush. Click and... out of focus. Why? Many reasons. Slight breeze moves some brush a bit and the camera was focused on the brush. Or a leaf blowing by. Or a bird flying thru the shot. So, wasted shot. If you shut off the AF and use the AF button, the focus is locked on your target. No breeze, leaf blowing by or anything entering the frame of the shot is going to disturb what YOU want to shoot.

Works the same in a city shot. Where that car comes out of nowhere and ruins it. Landscape where a bird flies thru and you don't notice until you get home that you didn't get that magnificent shot.

Turn off auto focus on K3 Shutter Button

Yeah, I usually "carry" on green. My thumb automatically goes to the AF button when I swing up the camera.

But I'm not sure if the U1,2 or 3 are essentially the same as green basically if nothing is set.

Disabling Shutter Release Button's Half-Press Focus

Really just got the camera a week ago. (Shooting Pentax from the 70's) Aside from the AF it's great. But right now having quite a bit of snow with giant flakes. Had to pull out the k20D to get some clean shots of the back yard. :( Sounds really tedious to have to disable it in each mode. Not to mention no option in green. I pretty much always thot of the shutter AF a bug, not a feature. Oh well.

Yeah I only tried to get to it in U1 just to see if I could get at it. Probably missed saving it. Thing is I want to disable it across the board. Doesn't seem possible. Having it disabled for so many years I'm going to have to learn how to use the camera all over again. Or just get rid of it. Not a happy camper.

Didn't stick for me in U1. But generally when I'm walking around I keep it on green. A quick shot could be lost if you have to play with settings. To me, not being able to disable anything is kinda dumb. We all have our own way of shooting. Even if you have some time, you take a shot and it's ruined when you realize a leaf or bird or whatever blew by and the focus locked on that instead of what you want focused. So right now, this camera gets a HUGE thumbs down from me.

Disabling Shutter Release Button's Half-Press Focus

Never had the problem with a k10 or k20. Setting it was universal. And if I do set it in another mode it doesn't hold. Jumps back to af1. Quite annoying. I don't know how many shots it's destroyed on me. Just want to disable it permanently. After quite a few years my finger is on the shutter button AND the AF button. For me it's too easy to ruin a shot with the shutter trying to focus for me.

Problem I have is I can't set it to AF2. Grayed out. At least in green mode. But if I change mode to U1 I can set it to AF2, but it won't hold in other modes. And I positively hate the shutter button auto AF.
Any other suggestions?

Seems everyone on the planet already has FF. IMHO, it seems that historically, Pentax is usually the last horse out of the barn. But once it does leave the barn the quality is generally much higher than any of it's competitors.

10 Reasons why manual focus primes are better than those new auto focus zoom lenses

I'm thinking we'll have to agree to disagree. :) As I said, I have mine set at spot focus. I also have the shutter AF disabled and use the AF on the back of the camera so it doesn't change when I snap the pic. So if I want to take a shot of one flower in a field I can do that. If I want the whole field I can do that too. And since I have the shutter AF off I can still adjust manually if I feel the need.
On the other hand, as we all know, some (even identical) lenses are better than others. I have some primes that are great. Others are horrendous. And that's certainly the same with AF lenses. But I find the AF (IF you can find a good one) lenses save those precious split seconds when you need to get that shot in focus quickly.
Of course... nothing is perfect for everything! Do I have some of those once in a lifetime shots I destroyed? Oh, ubetcha! :)

Never had that problem. But I have the AF set for spot focus. Rarely ever change it. For me, faster, easier. Whatever I need in focus, is in focus. Instantly. But YMMV. Depends on your own needs. Depends on your style of shooting.

Magic Lantern Guide for the K5

Yeah I found the ML guide for my K20D much more helpful than the manual. Tips on this and that. Don't really need a how to on how to take pics, need a guide on how to use the camera. And ML does it well.
For instance the most annoying thing to me "was" the idiotic (to me) AF on the shutter button. It's ruined more shots than I can shake a stick at. Who knew you can disable it?
I now use the AF on the back of the camera. So if you're doing a landscape and a gust of wind blows a tree branch in front of you, you don't have a blurred landscape but a great focus on the flippin branch! It's locked where you set it. And there's a load of these tips many unique to Pentax.
As far as the K7 manual... I'm sure if it applied to the K5 it would say K7/K5. So I was hoping for a K5 manual myself.
