Strange behaviour from my K-70...aperture block?

The camera has been sent for repairs. The guy at the store figured it was indeed aperture block failure. Although he was quite familiar with the issue, this was the first K-70 he has had to send in for repair.

Also, I learned today Pentax camera warranty is 2 years here in Canada. Repair only has 6 month warranty.

Strange behaviour from my K-70...aperture block?

Update: I got up this morning and tried camera with kit zoom. I took a dozen photos, all very dark/black. Plenty of light, iso cranked. I swapped for manual lens and left for work. I took ~100 photos in the field. Worked great. This evening I tried the kit zoom again and the camera seems to be working fine. Safe to say the aperature motor failure is intermittent, if that is what is going on.

Good news is that I purchased the camera on Sept. 27, 2017 so it is still under warranty. I'm taking it to the local camera shop where I bought it tomorrow. Will let you know what they say.

Thanks. After reading this, unfortunately it seems my K-70 aperture motor is failing.

The first few shots are dark, then it wakes up. Same settings. It must be headed to permanent failure soon. Wow, this is very disappointing. I've owned this camera for exactly one year. I love it, but I expected much better reliability. Will let you know how it goes with warranty.

I hope so. I did buy it from local camera store. I doubt I will be able to replicate the issue for them though. Hopefully they take my word.

I thought my K-70 was toast tonight! Maybe it still is! Took it out of the bag for a few shots of a rainbow and it was displaying all signs of aperture block failure. No amount of resetting or removing battery helped. The photos were all black unless I cranked up exposure and even then still very dark. Yes, I tried a variety of modes and photographing a variety of subjects with varying lighting. Metering, complete garbage. I swapped the lens for an old manual K to do further testing. Photos were fine but I was setting aperture manually. I put the kit lens back on and now everything seems to be working fine again. However, now that I think back I would say that one out of every 20 or 30 photos for the past few months was black or severely underexposed. I chalked it up to poor metering or bad settings but thinking back I think it was probably aperature block failure. Has anyone ever heard of this as being an intermittent issue. Any advice? Not sure what I should do. I think my camera warranty expired just a few days ago!

You make some really good points. Given its size, it would never be on my short list. Am I to assume the bulk translates to superior optics?

I'm not off to a great start. Can't connect my Samsung phone to my k70. Correct network/password...spins for eternity. Reset everything and still no luck.

Why? Is it a redundant lens? Honest question. A top quality, fast, normal lens for FF body seems like a no-brainer to me. I only own crop cameras so it doesn't appeal to me but if I had a K1...

I just built a new 2nd gen Ryzen rig with 16GB RAM and M2 SSD. Couldn't be happier.

GPU prices are falling but still overpriced.

Not always but usually K70 with 18-135 and a few primes. I've been considering a pancake 35mm for reducing kit size while mtn biking and long hikes.

I like the first one, better composition to my eye. Cropped to square would be my preference.

Yes I agree. The K colours are magical. I just picked up a K 200mm. Same great colours.

Haha! I'm leaving it open to interpretation.

Another idea might be to shoot some landscapes with a normal prime. Stitch to maximize FOV.

New: FA 31/1.8
Vintage: K 28/2

As others have said, too expensive.

At the other extreme, I just bought a K 200mm for a song. Strange (awesome) that some really great lenses are so cheap. The K 55/1.8 is another good example.

Thanks for the heads up, but no definately not going to be earning a living at this and not looking to spend thousands of dollars. A versatile zoom would probably meet my needs better than a very high end 500mm. Just looking to get some fun wildlife shots while doing geology field work.

Man...this makes me want the K 28/3.5! Stunning photos. Was there a lot of PP to get those colours to pop?

I would pick a 35mm or 40mm prime over the 18-50 zoom any day of the week. I actually use a K 55/1.8 mounted on a Sony NEX for messing around more than I'd like to admit. Sony has excellent focus peaking.

Thanks for sharing photos folks. Nice! Good points being made for zoom. I'm definitely leaning that way. I agree, a 200mm+ prime does seem kind of limiting.

And yes, I have read a few reviews. The prime lenses generally score better than the zooms in terms of IQ, but it's likely a compromise worth making. After all, I get plenty of joy out of my 18-135 and it's far from perfect.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Yes but those qualities come from the thing behind the camera, not the lens! ;)
