Nothing new.

But slightly surprised by lack of such joke this year.

Thinking of Nikon, Canon

Glad to know you stick with Pentax.
I use K5 and D800E.
K5 flash problem can easily be overcome by practising to get it right.

I have two suggestions:
1) With the pop up flash, dial the flash exposure compensation to -1.3 to -2.0 during daylight as a fill or while indoor to get the desired DOF with smaller aperture (avoiding overexposing the foreground.
2) With external flash indoors, leave the flash and camera on manual mode and AF on auto-c (will focus for you). Then set your aperture to f4 while manually set your ISO to 200-400 and use your shutter speed to control the ambient light (1/20 to 1/60 handheld).

With any camera system (Nikon included), the camera may not get the correct ambient exposure (though subject is well exposed). It is your practice with your gear that will get the picture right.

There is no problem with printing big (3 feet) with K5 shots provided you get adequate light.

All the best!

Welcome….
I have a K5 for two years and still very happy with the result and the whole Pentax system.
I don't have a K3 yet….but doubt you can go wrong with it.

Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 Art VS. Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 EX

Just like many others i have had trouble deciding wether to get Sigma 17-50 or Pentax DA* 16-50...
I ended up getting both zooms during the black Friday deal last year.

After shooting both lenses for a year, i personally prefer the Sigma - faster AF, sharper wide open. While i do like the idea of f1.8 on Sigma 18-35, i shoot mostly indoor events and need greater DOF plus reach most of the time. For me, 17-50 is the winner.

If you need the best IQ, then you can't go wrong with Pentax prime...

All the best!

Sigma 50mm f1.4 is a big lens but sharp at f1.4 with AF.... Currently there is a discount for this lens at bh...

I have never owned Pentax 55 but there are good reviews on this lens.

If you need the convenience of a zoom and good IQ, get the Sigma 17-50....

If you wish to take it to another level and don't mind a prime, get the FA 31.

I have gone through my work for the past twelve months in preparation for another photo book ...... IQ from combo 31mm plus 77mm in low light is superior to Sigma 17-50 zoom.... which by the way is a better zoom in IQ than my Pentax 16-50.

IMHO, if there is one lens i won't part with Pentax, it is the FA31.

Inbuilt flash recycling

Thank you for the info....will definitely try the external flash.

The small amount of extra light can make a huge difference to a photo taken during the day, especially to the shadows.

All the best.

Inbuilt flash recycling

I often use inbuilt flash dialled down to -1.7 EV or -1.3 EV to fill high contrast outdoor or indoor scenes on my K5. To be honest, i can get result as good as a Nikon external fill flash on a Nikon dslr.

The shutter after the shot with filled flash is then frozen for 2 seconds before it can be activated again for the next shot presuming the camera is still copying and recharging the power of the inbuilt flash.
Does anyone know if there is a way to shorten that recycling time? I don't like external flash plus TTL to fill a scene.

Does the battery grip with extra battery help to shorten the recycling time?

Many thanks for your help...

If you try Green or A, you can hardly go wrong.
I keep my camera in central weighted metering unless in extreme light.

In terms of interface ease to navigate, K5II is way ahead of Nikon or Canon....

After a few thousand shots, you will know how to overcome the shortcomings of your gear...

I was undecided.....and bought DA16-50 plus Sigma 17-50 from bh.....

Six months later, Pentax is exhibiting early sign of sdm failure.....

Sigma is sharp and still going.

I love both lenses but if i have to choose again, i will get the Sigma.

Downgrade from D800 to K5?

It's Touit for X mount. I have not purchased Fuji camera yet.

Agree...For a compact size DSLR with all the functions and fantastic UI, you can't beat Pentax K5......
Pentax Ltd are fantastic. I am keeping my Pentax K5 (no issue at all) and will upgrade when there is a 'reasonable' upgrade.

All the best!

I have once owned the Nikkor 24-70G. It is huge and heavy and IQ is OK....

Now i have K5 and various primes (2 years), zoom lenses which i am extremely please with. I am not looking forward to any big DSLR again.

Just ordered the two Touit lenses....
I am hoping the new system can be a sufficient 'bridge' and a back up for my hobby till Pentax has a reasonable flagship....

K5II replacement will be with 21 point AF, different processor but same body and 16 Mpx sensor and claim to have ISO 1mil..... but called K5III.... to attract new Pentax customers..... at 1200 US

but entry level D3200 has 24Mpx APSc for US546.00 but limited specs....

Not infrequent you hear in other forums photographers give up their FF cameras opting for M4/3 due to its smaller size.

7D is bigger and if you decide to get L lenses, the combo IMHO is 'massive'. You may not realise the bulk till you go on a hiking trip or long trip sightseeing on foot. The weight of the gear can kill the joy in photography if you add an external flash to fill the light. I give up D700 and 24-70 zoom and SB900 for a Leica RF. Subsequently i have added K5 with few Limited lenses.

K5 is a lot more compact and the limited lenses are fantastic for landscape or general photography. The user interface is so much better than any Canon. I am happy to go overseas with K5 and FA31 lens only. Then again, that is just me.

You can't go wrong with either camera in term of IQ but there is a difference in size between them.

All the best!

K-mount mirrorless....FF

If it is a Leica with APSc and M mount,.... personally i will rather get a XE1 with adaptor to use my M mount lenses.

If it is a Leica FF with no RF but optional EVF, then it will be good news for Leica fan if it is priced around 3 to 4K. However, i am not certain how much Leica can simplify the mini to cut cost from M other than getting rid of RF mechanism?

As for pentax, i personally love to see a FF K mount but have little faith in it ever happen....

The new Sony rumour is a FF NEX and likely no more SLT. Maybe Sony will focus on FF ILC, which IMHO is a smart move.... It is hard to gain market share with pro DSLR as Cannikon is the big player.

If it is given to me, i will pick RX1 because of AF with Zeiss and because i have Leica gear (don't need another manual camera).

Unfortunately the price of Ltd are slowly getting close to Zeiss ZM but still far from Leica. The IQ of Ltd are very good with 'AF' though not exactly Zeiss and Leica in build or IQ.

Cannikon --- not even close.
