That's a plan - I use the AA adaptor usually, but I could swap for the Usual battery while the camera is on charge

Hi, thanks for the reply!
I guess I wouldn't be happy if it involves any degree of dismantling, so I will take it to a local dealer!

Autofocus problem with Tamron 18-200

Sorry for not replying to you guys earlier!
In the end I solved this problem by investing in a Pentax 18-135mm zoom. What a difference, best lens I have ever bought and now rarely leaves my camera!

Hi
I have a fairly recent but irritating problem with my K-r in that when I remove the battery to charge, it loses the time and date settings. This can be as quick as an hour or less.
I cannot find any reference in the manual to a back up battery, so is this a fault, or is there a battery I can change which hold up the settings?

Cheers!

mirror flop? shutter issues, vibrations...

I have had a similar problem with mirror 'flop' on my K-r. It onlu happened with particular lenses - Tamron 70-300 and Pentax 18-135.
I read somewhere that it can be caused by the battery, and to swapover to the AA battery holder. I did this, and have not had a problem since. Something to do with slightly different voltage and the body really being designed for the 4 x AA batteries. Not sure of the technicalities but it worked for me

Autofocus problem with Tamron 18-200

Hi

I have the above lens on my K-r, and it's a really versitile lens and produces some good images for my level of photography :)

However if I am trying to autofocus on a very distant object ( > 50m for example or near infinity) at short focal lengths, the autofocus will not lock on. I can make it lock on if I zoom in, lock on, and zoom out again, or switch to manual, but both are a pain, when it shoudl be able to focus.

I was wondering if it was a lack of contrast when zoomed right out for a wide landscape shot?
Seems to happen in all lighting conditions too.

I have heard that Tamron zooms can be slow and noisy when focussing (true) but cant figure out why it won't lock on.

Does anyone else get this, or can suggest a fix?

Cheers!

Having had a search on the forum for another issue I had, I think I may now know why the images are so dark now, when I am sure they used to look OK.
I had also been unable to get the ISO lower than 400, which had caused me some issues on holiday given how bright the sun was :)
I *may* have highlight correction switched on. Not sure how/why I would have done this, but will have a look at the camera when I get home!
As far as I can tell the highlight correction DOES affect RAW images and can make them look underexposed unless processing with the Pentax untility?

Having tried FastStone, I am really impressed with it's speed and features!
The RAWs do look better in it too.
I have tried The Pentax software, but couldnt really get to grips with it - but that may be my lack of understanding.
I usually use PSE 9 which I am getting to know my way around fairly well now...
But for a fast viewer for sorting a deleting, the FastStone one seem to hit the spot for me!

Hi thanks for the reply.

Yes indeed, I fully intend to process the RAW images properly, but I wanted to quickly scan through them to discard any I was not happy with, hoping to speed up processing.
Particularly as I somehow managed to get a fair amount of dust on the sensor and they will need a lot of touching up.
Not sure how that happened, only 2 lens changes all trip, and both indoors....
With the images being so dark they have been hard to evaluate.
FastStone hasbeen mentioned a couple of time so I will give this ago. It would be nice to know that what I am looking at is at least a reasonable representation of the image to avoid 'over processing' the final JPEG, which may then look rubbish if viewed elsewhere, such as via Flickr (not that I am very keen on Flickr anymore :) )

Hi dmnf

I am using Windows 7 and an add-on is available for viewing RAW images in the MS viewer.
I have also tried to find a RAW viewer for my iPad, but cannot find one (yet) that will import the images from an SD card plugged into the SD card adaptor.
Could just be my monitor is out of sorts, it always used to be OK.
I will try out my monitor at work, and also my laptop to compare results, as has been suggested.
I will try FastStone also as you suggest!

Thanks all for your advice!

Strangeley, looking at the images in 'large icon' in Windows Explorer, the PEFs look a lot better, almost as I would expect, AND brighter than the converted JPEGs!
Puzzled.

This one was taken with a Tamron 70-300mm in Macro.
Again the conversion from PEF to JPEG makes it look much better.
Any way I can attach a .PEF?

Thanks for the replies.
Sorry for the tardy response I have been out this afternoon to see if the results were any different with the kit 18-55 lens.
I have attached one that was taken with the Tamron.
As I cannot attach a PEF here I have converted to a JPEG, and in doing so the background looks a lot better.
It is almost black viewing the PEF in the Mocrosoft photo viewer.
It loooks better in camera raw and when converted to JPEG.
The histogram is all to the left, but probably because of the dark background.
I will have a look at some of the ones I did this afternoon..
I gusess the problem is with the Microsoft Photo Viewer?

Hi

Having just got back from hols, I put about 750 RAW images onto the PC and found that upon viewing them, they appear very dark on the PC screen. I am having to lighten the vast majority Camera Raw by quite a lot.
They all looked ok an the camear screen though, so I am wondering if I am increasing the exposure too much and if they were on someone elses PC screen they would now be too light!
I am sure I have not had this problem before, although my K-r does tend to underexpose anyway, but some of these images are way too dark.

Any pointers here?

I was shooting mostly with my Tamron 18-200 which has always given good but not outstanding results obviously, but I was wondering if the lens had gone faulty in some way? It has started having trouble with auto focus at wide angles on distant objects.

any advice appreciated!

Hi

they were shot at

42mm, f4.5
ISO 1600 1/125

Lightroom must have stripped the EXIF when I exported to JPEG..

Hi

I realise there have been MANY threads on this subject!
I also know the K-r can be subject to this effect too, and mine is no exception.

I have been trying to correct with the AF fine tuning but it doesn't seem to have much, if any, effect.

-10 -> IMGP2966 | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
0 -> IMGP2967 | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
+10 -> IMGP2968 | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

3 images with adjustments of -10, 0 and +10 and there seems to be no appreciable difference.
The focus point was kept the same at the number '20' but the actual focus point seems nearer the 22 or 23.
shot in natural light on a tripod. Seems similar whatever lens I use, but this one was the kit 18-55mm

Could anyone help shed any light on this for me?
It is making close up photography an entirely manual focus exercise!

Cheers

I had been considering the AA battery holder for our next holiday, more as a 'just in case' really, but will get one to try.
Thanks for the links, I have never been too sure of buying from ebay from far east sellers, but the price is certainly better than the official Pentax make £30 in the UK!

Hi Hans thanks for the reply.
I already had option 2 set to use the aperture ring so I had a look at the lever.
I looked straight at first glance but on closer inspection I thought it *could* have been leaning out slightly.
I gave it a careful slight tweak, and the problem so far appears resolved!
Light faded too much now, but I will give it a proper work out another time.
It's odd but the problem happened *much* less often in flash mode..
Thanks for the tip!

I guess it must be something along those lines.
You get what you pay for I suppose, but my skills do not really warrant spending hundreds on a lens :)
I should perhaps take it back, but as the whole chain of stores went bust, it may prove tricky.
I will email the administrators tomorrow.

Cheers

AND, I have just had the mirror lock in the up position.
some noise coming from the body. I had to drop the battery to reset.
This happened twice, both when shooting fairly rapidly

I have also just noticed that after taking a photo, looking through the viewfinder I see the aperture setting is flashing.
after the mirror flick back up and down it goes steady.
