What look to be clouds is actually known as the Milky Way. Taken in south, central Colorado, looking south above the horizon. A very dark site. On the left is Sagitarius, you might be able to pick out the stars of "The Teapot" towards the middle left edge of the photo. On the right is the constellation Scorpius. The red giant star, Antares is near the right edge of the photo. The Milky Way is the name for the galaxy in which our solar system resides. The "clouds" are formed from billions of stars in one of the spiral arms.
The camera was mounted on a Celestron CG tripod, with tracking. The tracking enables the extended exposure of 91 seconds. Enjoy

Jeff - you'll need to restrict your exposure time on shots like this to 8 seconds or less. Otherwise you'll get the star drift that you see in your photos.
Or use a system to allow your camera to "track", such as a motorized telescope mount.

Back in October of 2009, we had never heard of the "Havanese" breed. Then a customer showed up one day with the cute, well-behaved fur-ball, and we were hooked.
These dogs are very smart, well behaved, fun-loving, and all around great companions. They are also "hypo-allergenic" in that they shed very little. My wife has severe asthma, and is not bothered by her new buddy.
Here are three shots, Jasper is just over 15 weeks old.

Nope Auto EV is OFF, the default.
Maybe the lens???? I was using a Tamron AF17-50 f2.8....

I thought Manual Mode should be just that - manual.
But when I alter the aperture, or the shutter speed, the camera seems to want to stay within a range, for example. it may only allow shutter speeds of 1/25 to 1/80, then go back to 1/25 instead of faster shutters. Or same with aperture, f4 to f8, then back to f4.
Is it trying to fit these into a usable range?? I might be shooting in very low light situations for example, but I want a closed aperture for DOF, and can extend the time.... but it won't let me...
Does this sound typical? Is there a work-around?

Yes I was surprised I had shot this at full extension of the 55-300... and more surprised at the sharpness of the shot.
Tripod mounted of course, and used a remote, plus mirror up...

I keep working on my technique - comments welcome
1 day after full moon. Shot with Pentax 55-300 at 300mm. 1/25, F13, ISO100
Taken at Camp Hale, Colorado. Camp Hale was a 10th Mountain Division training site during WWII, now it's just a empty park nestled in the Colorado Mountains between Vail and Leadville.
I try to keep post processing to a minimum...

I'll get a chance to try some of the suggestions in the next few days, and report back.
I did not connect the lead for the auto focus, the shots I take requiring a remote are almost manual focus.

I orginally posted this in the wrong forum, so I am reposting this here - sorry!
My K7 is functioning almost perfectly, excusing operator errors, that is!
I have notice a small issue when take shots with a homemade wired remote shutter release.... it works like it should, but once in a while, the camera seems to freeze after a shutter release, and the result never appears on the rear screen. It seems I have to take another remote shot, then all is fine. The camera does capture both photos...
My wired remote uses a 6-7 foot wire. The factory one is less than 2 feet long - but this seems more like a camera issue, since the photo is taken properly.
I contacted Pentax - their answer was "an incompatibilty" with my homemade remote...
Anyone else see this anomaly????
Update:
I had built a similar cable for my K10D, and it worked fine. This cable works fine, except for maybe 1 out of 10 exposures, then it will "hang", until I take the next photo.

Mike - even I was _amazed_ at the steadiness, I didn't flinch! Even the 100% of this, the stars are still round, and pin points...

Here's a couple of post sunset shots, taken with a new K7.
Both with a Tamron 17-50, ISO 100.
You'll note the Crepuscular rays in the second - caused by the sun shining through some cloud patches...

Here's a shot with my K7. Mounted on a Celestron CG5 mount, actually piggybacked ob a small refractor, but not using the refractor as the lens...
I'm not happy with the amount of noise in the photo, but I didn't have a remote, so wound up "gently" holding the shutter for 78 seconds. This weekend I'll try again - longer exposures, less ISO (remote shutter control)
ISO 1600, Tamron 17-50 lens, F3, 78 seconds
A shot of the Milky Way, looking south towards the horizon. This is a very dark site (rare these days) - almost no light pollution. The stars of Sagitarius can be seen on the left.

I would like to know if this is about what I should expect from this lens, or should I get better performance? A better job of focusing maybe?
100% crop of a DNG RAW, shot with a K7 and the Pentax DA55-300, 300mm F10 1/60sec... manual focus was slightly better than using AF.
This is Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun, on Cheyenne Mtn, near the Broadmoor Hotel, just over three miles from my house. 8:00AM in the morning, just a very slight haze....
Sharpened in Lightroom, and reduced exposure just a tad...
