Sometimes the zoom function is so handy for composition. These pics are from when I did a "test drive" for this lens. Taken at Lake Washington in Seattle.
No cropping in the second image - taken at 430mm, and wide open at F/5.6. Light sharpening in PP, since I always shoot in RAW format. Actual image size is restricted in attachments.
Image resolution for both is 3872 x 2592.

420 fox...
Had the opportunity Sunday (April 20) afternoon to photograph my local red fox, and it didn't strike me until later that on 4/20 I coincidentally shot at 420mm - Tamron Adaptall-2 300/2.8 360B + Olympus MC-14  (if you right-click and select open image in new tab, you can see a larger version)
Foxy had both grass and munchies...
And then left, looking awfully "relaxed"...:asleep: |

In 2017, I was able to drive to Idaho from Washington and shot the eclipse with my Pentax fish eye lens (time lapse) and the DA 560 at totality.
In 2024, I had to fly to get to the path of totality. MFT was the way to go with OM-1 bodies and 12-40 and 150-400 TC more easily packed for travel.
Here are shots from Carbondale, IL. Time lapse with the 12-40 up to totality and quick shots with the 150-400 at totality. The experience made special by a northern cardinal singing it's evening chorus as the light faded and temperature cooled just before totality. |

K1ii FA100.2.8 Macro
A ~1:1 crop from one of the photos taken this evening of my Golden Orb Weaving spiders. This one is about 2-3cm long in the body, will probably double that size.
I now have realised that the closer you get, the narrower the depth of field, something I need to work on ...
Now, if you will excuse me, I need to go and get my dinner!

Coyote in the evening - G9 + Tamron Adaptall-2 400/4 65B
Shot wide open, ISO 3200 pushed one stop in PP.
He was hunting - I checked the spot after he left and saw a dead mouse, but why didn't he eat it? Perhaps I made him uncomfortable.
First shot was cropped by 40%, second shot by 50%. (if you right-click and select open image in new tab, you can see a larger version) |

Soggy evening red fox (G9 + Tamron Adaptall-2 SP 400mm F4 65B) **mission not accomplished**
Lots of wind and rain here in New Jersey over the last few days. Alerted by my neighbor's barking dog, I ventured out early this evening to find my local fox foraging. My plan - my vision - was to attempt some slow shutter photos that would convey the aesthetic and impact of the rain on the fox. Things didn't work out too well, though - the 15-20 mph sustained wind (with gusts up to 40 mph) were too much for me and I was unable to keep my camera steady. The fox was uber-twitchy as well. So I increased the shutter speed and worked on trying to focus with my Tamron 400/4.
Here are three of the pics from this evening's brief escapade, all shot wide open. First two pics were cropped about 25%, the last image is the full frame. (if you right-click and select open image in new tab, you can see a larger version) |

Just got the Kenko 1.4x TC a week ago from KEH, but unfortunately I have to return it as it frequently doesn't allow AF (or MF for that matter) nor pass through aperture information. Last year I owned a copy but even though it functioned as expected, the optics were quite poor.
This is one of the few times it worked, and AF was rather snappy with the Viltrox adapter and the AF set to animal detect.

The plant might be looking a little wobbly, but flowers nicely ...
Shot with my K1ii using an old SMC FA100/2.8 Macro that I got to copy some b&w film negs my son-in-law's family had. Never been into macros, that might be changing ...

My best bald eagle yet
K3-3 with 150-450 + 1.4x TC
Cropped to about 50% of the frame
Even at F11, the DOF is too narrow to get everything sharp
