Welcome to the dSLR world! As an instructor of photography (my own "hello" posting was just submitted, awaiting admin approval to post), my suggestion would be to read the manual, have the willingness to simply "play and explore" what the various controls and menu functions can do. Try different modes - Aperture Priority (Av), Shutter Priority (Tv), Manual (M) - to see how the camera acts (and reacts) and behave with different lighting conditions. See how the "compensation" options work when you second-guess what the camera "thinks" is right and the shot is either too dark or light.
Shoot, regardless whether the image will be "good" or "bad" - there won't be any secret "bad picture" police chasing after you nor post your goofs on FB.
You're starting the climb on a learning curve...enjoy the journey.
Best Wishes from N Calif...

I was one of those who was thrilled when Pentax finally decided to jump into the dSLR world, having had 35mm film cameras going back to the late '70s (and still have them!). (My "plan B" was moving over to Canon.) My K10D is my main workhorse (although have intentions of moving it to a back-up position when a K-5 is acquired)...still exercise older K1000 and MX cameras.
My photography involvement goes back to the 1970s, in 35mm Pentax and 6x6 Bronica film formats, with experience ranging from part-time professional, to teaching, including being published.
Currently, I have been the photography instructor at Tracy, California's Grand Theatre Center for the Arts since 2009, and am their primary photographer for in-house imagery and publications.
Happy to be here on the Forum!
Best Wishes, from N California... Richard D. Beebe
