Nikon vs pentax

Yes voice. I did sell it to a gentleman who will be perfectly happy with it i hope. I still stand by my assessment though. I feel that the KR is a better camera ,even the kit lens feels like its higher quality. The Nikon zoom i had was not any more sloppy than a previous canon lens i had.Very flimsy construction. I know i am talking about cheap lenses here but, if the image shifts when you touch the lens barrel to focus then it just isn't usable for me as i tend to manual focus for critical shots. At least the Pentax has a rubber grip on the focus ring which makes MF easier IMHO.I feel that the canon i had focused faster and better than my Pentax, the Nikon was just not any faster than my KR which isn't that great as a lens with an internal focus motor being outran by a screwdrive focus? as far as the mount is concerned even though my kit lens has a plastic mount as well, the Nikon mount was quite cheaply made and wouldn't stand up to a whole lot of abuse.I am merely an Amateur photographer but i expect even cheap gear to be up to a certain standard, which is one of the reasons i went with Pentax in the first place. Nothing like using some old film glass i had laying around. To bad my dad wasn't a Pentax guy. After he passed i acquired his Minolta MD mount gear.Guess i am going to be shopping for some adapters so i can put them to use. So much easier to do with a Pentax.

Hi all. A while back i picked up a slightly used Nikon D3000 body.I then added a Nikon 55-200mm zoom lens that i paid $25 for. Had to put a new ebay mount on it. Got it working! I go about my business snapping some photos over the next few days.I have come to a conclusion.....Factoring in that this is a 3 year old camera there is no comparison to my KR. The lens is sloppy when you touch it( same thing with my old anon XTI) the menus seem counter intuitive, only 3 FPS etc.The image quality is not even as good as my XTI was. I got this as a cheap backup body but i am selling it this morning.I realize this is a 3 year old camera but i do not like it at all.The lens even turns the wrong way to mount it.My advice for anyone thinking of jumping ship is that the grass defiantly ain't greener on the other side of the fence.Sorry, had to get that off my chest.

Been in the Smoky mountains since wed,I have seen literally dozens of Canikons of type. Not one single Pentax. I have gotten some disconcerting looks when they lay eyes on my white KR. One teenage girl came up to me though and said i had the coolest camera she had ever seen. Maybe pentax should throw some advertising bucks toward that demographic. She had never even heard of pentax.

I also have an off brand charger for my wife's Sony SLT-33. It charges faster than her OEM charger, of course her OEM is the slowest charger i have ever seen. usually takes 8 hours so its great to be able to charge more than one battery at a time. We are going to the Smoky Mountains tommorrow and will be hiking during the day. She will probably have to switch batteries and I wouldn't be able to charge 2 of them overnight with her OEM charger in time to be ready to go back out early the next morning. That's what you have to deal with when you have an EVF ,battery life is not so great compared to my KR. I think i could even run my EL-Cheapo charger off of a small solar panel if need be. Next year i hope to spend the night in a mountain lodge that doesn't have electricity,so the solar thing might be just the ticket to keep camera batteries charged. We shall see.

The battery sets i bought came with a charger. I prefer the Pentax charger myself but the el-cheapo versions come with a 12 volt charging cord, pretty handy when you don't have access to house current or need to charge more than one battery at a time.

You should be good to go then.I would post when you see how good or bad they do.I have noticed that on mine the light stays green on the charger even while its not plugged in so i would definetly remove from the charger when its done.

I agree with you on that.I guess the off brands are so cheap one can afford to gamble.I used them on my canon XTI and my D3000 as well and had good luck so far.

I use 2 of the chinese batteries in my kr. Never had any issues. The capacity is the same as the OEM battery. If you have the money then by all means get the Pentax batteries. Just keep this in mind, most OEM batteries are probably made in China as well so other than some sort of warranty i don't think there is an advantage to using the OEM batteries.Just my $.02

well,i was in the very same situation as you more than a year ago,a former film guy looking to get back into photography. I did my research and couldn't find anything that gave as much for the cost as the KR. I havent had any regrets. Awesome low light preformance and 6FPS frame rate yada, yada, yada. If you have held one in your hand it does feel like a camera and not a toy. I think you could pound nails with it if you had to,its very well constructed. Couple that with the low cost and find someone on Craigslist selling an old Pentax film SLR so you can pick up some glass and you can be in pretty cheap. I got mine used and the only complaint is it's not weather sealed which of course would be ludicris at the KR's typical street price. If you hold both a KR and a 3100 side by side i will bet the debate for you would be over.

Kr and a77 in low light

My wife has an SLT-33 . The EVF was ok to me at first however, i prefer an optical viewfinder . The finder does have a large FOV but it does get noisy in low light situations. The camera itself does about as good in low light as my KR. The video is very good though, much better than the KR. Her SLT-33 overheats very easily though. I would bypass the slt line at least for a while longer till all of the bugs are worked out. Just my opinion as i am sure others will disagree.

I also started out with a Rebel XTI as well. I wanted to know how you compare the two cameras? I myself felt like the camera was pretty good, just the kit lenses were total crap. They were decent in optical quality, but were really wobbly. I feel the KR feels like its much more robust in its construction as well. On the other hand,It seems that the XTI image quality was just as good as the KR,even though the XTI is 10Mp and the KR is 12MP.

KR available in 9 different colors from Walmart

On the subject of more visibility for Pentax. When i 1st considered switching over to Pentax i looked at Bestbuy's website and they only carried maybe 15 lenses for Pentax. As of a couple of days ago they were showing 34 lenses for Pentax. I am not sure if thats the exact number as i was at work and kept being interrupted by people wanting me to do my job while i was trying to count:). I am unsure but i think Walmart is also carrying more Pentax stuff as well. I think this bodes well for the future of Pentax.

I just noticed that walmart has the Pentax KR available in 9 different colors on their website for $699.95 with kit lens and 50 bonus prints. Kinda makes my Stormtrooper white KR look sorta bland! The only other place i have seen any colors is on EBAY at a very expensive price.

Pentax offical presence on this forum?

Does anyone here know if Pentax or Ricoh have any Presence (offical or non official)on this forum. I hear a LOT of customer feedback here and I was wondering if they are listening to what is said here. It seems like a waste for them not to as a lot of companies pay a lot of money just to hear what their customers think. Just wondering.

The color difference is delinetly there on yours, but i havent noticed it on mine. One observation i have though is I don't know if the finish is painted on or is just the color of the plastic, but my metal strap buckles havent managed to wear off the finish yet. It seems pretty robust to me.

Pentax KX DFS: Success!

It can be turned off in KR as well. For most people it probably woundn't be a factor BUT...to us aspiring astrophotographers its a major problem.Think of it like this.Taking pics thru a telescope might involve either a long exposure ,say 15 minutes. The camera does a dark frame for the same amount of time as the exposure,15 minutes,so you have to wait 15 minutes to make your next shot. Typically we might make a bunch of shorter exposures of 15 to 30 seconds of the same object.Again here we go again with a dark frame for each exposure made.dark frame subtraction is a great tool,so long as it can be switched off as you can make 1 dark frame and use it when you stack the images later using computer software. On my camera it does make a huge difference in image quality on low light shots. I think Pentax is going in the right direction in making their newer cameras with features like customizeable DFS ,built in interval timer, mirror lockup and other features that canon has has for years. Now if they would only give us a Pentax supplied tethering solution that works as well as canon!

Well,i must profess to a bout of idiocy on my part.My SR issue was of my own making.I jumped the gun, expecting to hear the Sr making adjustments during a long exposure. When i finally took the advice i was given i was able to determine that there wasn't a problem at all.

Well. I just tested.... After shooting 6 -1/2 second exposures with SR and 6 without SR i can definetly see a major improvement in sharpness. I guess i was looking for flaws as i do see some weird behavior in my camera as far as the digital filters go but nothing i can't live with. I must say i have egg on my face and i was wrong. I may have been remembering how my wifes Sony SLT-33 acts, you can hear SR all the time as it has an EVF. My thanks to everyone who was patient enough to try to help.

Px. You are correct and i recognize that. In my defense i didn't expect SR to make a blur free image, but i was looking for any noticable effect. I do appreciate your help and i will do as you suggested this evening. If it is a case of "PEBKAC" ( Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair) then i will be the 1st to admit it. Again i am grateful for the help,i just wasn't too happy with some "other" commentary that was made.

I have just done 3 sets of test pics. I see no difference in blurriness with or without SR. I tried the kit lens an 18mm and at 55mm using 3 second f22 exposures and 5 second f32 and actually one looks more blurry with Sr switched on . I can post the actual pics later when i get home if that would help.

well, the sound is the same whether Sr is enabled or not. I am basing this on how it sounded previously. I will have to devise some sort of test to see whether SR is working or not.

No. The lens correction is switched off. As a matter of fact, when i 1st got the camera ,it was switched on and that was causing the camera to slow down.
