Mirror lens usage

Thanks this is something I'd puzzled about for some years and never just connected the lens and tried to use it I have a long experience with cameras before all this newfangled stuff came along. My first camera was a box Brownie that might give you an idea. The first single lens reflex I had which was a Russian camera, you set everything. I used a Gossen Luna 6 for that still have it for that matter. So I assumed if the camera didn't know what aperture it was wasn't going to work that was silly enough not to just try it. So my next problem is to figure out how to hold the camera steady. I live in an area where there is quite a lot of birds, in Australia I have attached a photo of male and female superb parrots which sometimes come into my area. Hope you like it.

It's quite a while since I have used this lens the procedure I was doing was a bit of a put off. So just now I thought I would do an experiment went out and just put the lens into the camera without any settings previously I locked it into F/8. I thought that was the only way I could get a correct exposure and lo and behold the exposure seems to be correct. I assumed that situation would be the same as it was for cameras which didn't have automatic exposure. That is it would drop to some minimal settings and any photographs taken would be unusable. Only problem now being somewhat older it seems I can't hold the camera steady enough so I have a fair bit of shake.

Hi this might seem like a stupid question to many but I don't want to go to a lens dealer and ask. I have a K - r and a RMC Tokina 500 mm mirror lens. I can use it but to do so I manually set my camera to f/8 (fixed aperture of lens) and then I can proceed. It would seem this is straightforward enough but I find awkward. I bought it second hand sometime ago will modern mirror lens tell my camera that it is a F/8 automatically.

I have had this lens for a long time but probably taken less than 10 photos with it. It has a filter on the front of the lens that has always been left in place. This is my first time trying to sell anything through this forum and I am willing to negotiate of course. I am somewhat wary of how difficult the transaction will be if anyone is actually interested in it. I understand this lens has quite a reputation and is rare. But is there anyone interested in it? I am more interested in telephoto work and should not have bought it in the first place. It works quite successively with my K – r

Please send me a private message if interested in the item!

Perhaps I was not clear enough. On my kx-r in custom settings 22 use of apperture ring is set by default to prohibited. I had to change that to permited. Previous to that the shutter would not release with my manual lens. That is also in the instruction in the article I found on the forum.

Thanks all particularly Stone G.

Yes I have managed to get my existing lens to work with the Kx-r. I found an article about manual focusing on the forum. Critical was the custom setting for the apeture control. Once I did that AV mode worked fine. The lens is a Tokina 500mm f8. I have used mirror lenses for a while. I bought a russian lens (probably mid sixties) 500mm F8 and used it with a Start russian camera. I still have the camera but the lens was a victim of a divorce. I bought the Tokina as a replacement second hand about 1992 but have not used it much. Getting working means I will be using it a lot more particularly since spring approachs and there is a lot of bird life here in Canberra. A particular point of interest is a bird we call a King Parrot.

I might have a go at a teleconverter as well.

Thanks I found the article on manual focusing and have things working. The critical point was allowing the camera to ignore the aperture setting!

Use of Manual Lens Exposure

Hi this is the first time on this forum. I have a 500mm pentax mount mirror lens which I used with difficulty on my *istd Pentax DSLR. I upgraded to a Pentax Kx-r and found it was not usable
at all. I was thinking of buying an ODS Mirror Lens and asked the dealer for assurance that the adaptor for the 500mm Mirror lens would solve the exposure problem. That is the Kx-r will know it is a F/8 aperture and set the exposure properly. The dealer came back and said it is entirely manual so everything must be set manually. Is there anyone here that is using such a lens as the ODS or Samyang telephoto lens? If so how do you get a correct exposure? In the past I have found using an external exposure meter unsatisfactory because the different angle of view.

Dust on sensor

danrodi I recently bought a Kx-r and when changing lenses (I think) managed to get some in. This was really noticeable when taking videos. The camera's inbuilt dust detection was not showing anything. After doing some searchs on the web I found this site Welcome aboard! they have lots of good advice and sell cleaning gear. Showed me how to clean it and detect dust etc. Note you actually do not have anything on your sensor it is on sensor protective cover. In my case I had to use a fluid cleaner to finish the job and I was nervous about it. I think if you follow instructions and take care it is safe and not difficult.
