anyone have the service manual for the 18-125 sigma?
mine broke today. the zoom ring has disconnected from the inner workings so it won't zoom. I think a screw inside has broken.
anyone have the manual

Took this new lens down to London last week.
Picked it up for a stupidly low price as it was marked broken? spares or repair and I got lucky and have myself a stunning new lens for pennies. Very impressed with its performance. Most of these shots were ISO 3200 or less, all shot handheld with a K3 which also performed amazingly in the museums. A lot of those were down to 1/3 second shutter speeds due to the poor lighting.

I want to see new lenses from pentax at any show. a telephoto, an HD AW teleconverter and something mid range to get the juices flowing.

forget using a TC with the 55-300 unless you are birding or looking at something fairly static. I tried the 55-300 combination on both the K-X and K30 for airshows and it just hunted and hunted and hunted. you lose too many fstops for airshow work with that combination. On a really bright day, maybe, it might work but you are better off going Manual focus and birding or something slow moving.
but get a nice 55-300, with good light and the right conditions and you will still get some stunning photos from that combination.

if I had the sheckels I wouldn't even hesitate to pull the trigger but I wish to live and I have a wedding to pay for first. :( but a bump for a great lens.

isn't this something we all do? buy first and as we gain experience buy and sell again.
for me to start again, I think I would have two trains of throught.
1. a good GP walk around lens when I want to travel light.
2. a more specialist set of lenses when I have more time
so I'd have
18-135 WR lens as my general walk around
pentax 17-70 (or the new rumoured HD WR 18-70) as my normal day to day lens
Pentax 12-24 for my wide landscape architecture needs (although if someone does a 12-35 I'm there!)
Pentax DA 60-250 or the fabled Sigma 100-300 F4
the new HD 1.5TC
sigma 50-500 OS DSG for my airshow needs. but also have the DA60-250 + TC depending on image quality and shooting conditions.
if tamron ever release the 150-600 in K Mount, that comes into my stable to replace the bigma.

well bear in mind the K30 was essentially the K5 with a better PRIME engine, faster AF, WR but missing some features. making it a good beginner buy.
so it stands to reason that things evolve and you get a budget K3 equivalent. one of the reasons I finally cracked and upgraded from K30 to K3?
grip, faster AF, good low light performance. it wasn't the 24mp that swung me

my thoughts also.
well I suppose it all depends on what level of picture quality they are aiming for doesn't it.
automatically a few people seem to be jumping to the conclusion that it will be equivalent to DA 60-250 or sigma 100-300 in picture quality, ergo more money.
but the HD WR 55-300 is not stunning money. if they are building it to be as good as the 55-300 then I can't see how a £850 - £1100 won't be impossible.
it's all a balance of sales against no sales surely? a mid quality, pentax made WR telephoto lens with the new HD coatings to fill the gap in their lens lineup will garner interest from a lot of users and maybe even tempt across users of other systems. producing a top drawer WR HD telephoto modelled on the likes of the DA 60-250 will garner a lot of drooling but the price will put a lot of people off.
bearing in mind, take a 60-250, add the new 1.5 TC and at 1.5 crop on the APS-C you have 575mm equivalent.
the 135-380 lens is equivalent to 570mm. now why make a 135-380 telephoto at huge money on that basis. who is it going to tempt?
it's not long enough for hardcore birders, and a lot of people with the 60-250 might be content with just adding the new TC to their collection and keeping their lens rather than spend more money and upgrade.

I'm interested by the fact that everyone is jumping to the conclusion that this new rumoured 135-380 lens is going to be sigma 100-300 or pentax DA60-250 levels of quality and therefore a higher price.
but the HD WR 55-300 is not stunning money. if they are building it to be as good as the 55-300 then I can't see how a £850 - £1100 price point won't be impossible.

or they sell, saturate the market and see the resale price of the 60-250 go down a bit on the 2nd hand market for a short while and upgrade to the new lens.
obviously weight will be a factor, Pentax are known for good, not humongously heavy lenses so I hope this new lens will not be a beast like the bigma.
but i feel it more likely, if they are trying to build market share that they go the mid picture quality route. build on the good reputation of the 55-300 (which under the right conditions can take a stunning shot) and produce a sub £1000 to £1100 lens for the broader market.

I'd not been happy lately with how I've been standing when shooting and I was starting to feel that technique was playing a big part in the lack of keepers I was getting. sometimes I get a shot bang on and then the next one was lacking.
then I did a bit of looking online, came across this video and bingo, big improvement. two samples attached showing the difference.
Both are iso 3200 with very slow shutter speed and about F4 or 5 on the 18-55 WR lens on the K3 body. low shutter speed NR is turned on and shake reduction is turned on too.
First shot is with my normal techinque. As you can see, very prone to shake due to exposure times. The second shot, much crisper and more solid.

the mount ring rotates and then slides back off the back of the lens. the lens body has a couple of metal studs that fit inside the collar to help keep it in place.

god I so want one of these lenses now but wedding to pay for. My name would be mud if I got that before paying for the wedding. and interesting that in good light, with the TC attached it can capture action. with the K3's improved low light performance I think we have a winner!

Out in the countryside of the Yorkshire Dales today. shot about 4pm with sun getting low in the sky. this is on the bog standard 18-55 WR kit lens from my prior K30. The first panorama is 3 shots stitched together in photoshop. the full size image is 14000 pixels wide!!

there's something to be said about that Miguel that I agree with.
The K3 is a new camera for them with improved AF and a lot of other features. okay, so they've revamped the HD limited's and there is a new version of the 55-300 but a bigger lens at the time of launch would have been a big boon. but like you say, why didn't they cut a deal with tamron for that 150-600?

yeah, I'm still mad at Tamron for not doing that lens in Pentax mount. then, the roadmap for pentax seems to indicate some kind of 100-400 coming in the future.

really? that's a shame because with the TC that would give me the reach. with the 500 I'm out to 750, with the 300 and a 1.4 TC I'd be out to 640 which is fine.
Do you think I could shoot action with the lens on the K3 and crop in tight enough on the planes instead?

I currently use a 50-500 sigma (Non OS version) for airshows. It will be mounted to my new K3 but previously was hooked up to my K30. (guess who was a lucky boy for his birthday, maybe 40th birthdays aren't entirely a bad idea after all)
anyway, with lots of reading the Sigma 100 300 F4 EX has come to my attention. Awesome quality and definitely a good lens and sought after. but I wonder if anyone has used this with a sigma TC and shot action with it in that configuration? Does it still cope on autofocus or does the addition of the TC make it hunt?
or, would pairing the lens with a K3 and cropping in give me a good combination?
I go to more airshows, love photographing at them and it would be nice to jump to a better lens than the 50-500 with a noticeable rise in picture quality.

After a week of noodling with the camera and getting used to things. was out looking at wedding venues yesterday and took the camera with me. These were all inside the hotel in low light. all but the glass jar are at iso3200. I had turned off the NR entirely in the camera body but had shake reduction turned on. Low f stop hence lack of DOF on the wine bottle. Fast focus in poor light, I was impressed. It did not hunt once.

does such a beast exist as a third party tripod collar that can fit the sigma 50-500?
there's nothing wrong with mine but it does stick out a bit and is a pain to fit in a bag I have. If I could get a collar with a shorter neck out of the bottom tripod mount that would be jake. from what I can see it is approximately 85mm in diameter so quite a few of the chinese knocks for canon won't work because they have an inner diameter of 81mm
could I cheat and use an 81mm ring. get a longer screw and then line it with felt for a firm grip? can anyone with calipers assist with this.
on the Sigma, could you measure where the mount ring actually goes?
AND
measure the bit behind it, where the top clear plastic fnumber range opening is, that's thinner, maybe 81mm? which would be ideal. line with felt and it's bob on

I am considering a lens change and have a question I need advice on.
How do people feel about the Tokina in the context of 'I already have a bigma, should I switch from the bigma to the tokina as my long lens?'
I already have a Sigma 'bigma' 50-500 (Non OS version). I did one airshow last year with it, but it was rubbish weather, poor light and I wasn't yet used to stepping it down and getting the shutter settings right.
I'm very light when it comes to lenses, I only have 3.
18-55 WR stock lens which is actually quite nice but I am contemplating changing it soon for either the 18-135 or the 17-70
old Pentax 50 M lens which is super sharp but manual
and the bigma.
eventually I will expand to a wide zoom for landscape and architecture type stuff but I'm holding off for now to see if Pentax relax a new one soon. there is one on the roadmap perhaps. Also, doesn't the roadmap show a possible 100ish to 400 zoom for pentax to come soon?
Anyway, back to zooms.
I preferred the 50-500 over the 150-500 because I like the range of it, at airshows stuff can taxi by very close and the 50mm is short enough for me to get it. I only have one body so the reach is great. however the weight of the bigma is becoming irritating and certainly takes some of the enjoyment out of the day when my arms and wrists ache ( I prefer to shoot handheld you see)
I have read a few times that the 120-400 is slightly sharper than the bigma, but the 120 is too long for me at the low end.
I have a lead on a tokina 80-400, the fabled tokina lens but when reading about it, it seems some people being quite mixed about it now, when a few years ago it seems to have been more highly regarded.
Before anyone suggests it, I can't afford the EX 100-300 sigma + TC combination and I don't like using primes for airshows. I like zoom, to take in different situations. I don't go birding so don't need a prime.
Unfortunately, in pentax terms, that does not leave much to consider.
the sigma 120-400 is nearly as heavy at the bigma but the tokina is half the weight, a mere 2lbs or so, which is very good indeed.
does anyone with a Tokina 80-400 feel they can chime in on this.
I have a K3, and shoot action and fast moving stuff with the long lens so sample pictures would help very much.
