I think its safe for you to ignore your camera manual in this instance. I live in a similar climate to you, and I have designated my K20D as my "winter" camera. A couple reasons:

1. I can easily operate the camera whilst wearing gloves. I like to shoot manual and use the back button AF. My K5 is problematic as the buttons are too small and close together.

2. The batteries for the K5 are getting old and after half an hour in extreme cold, they don't have the juice to fully power the camera. I get mirror flopping and all sorts of egregious behavior. The K20D just soldiers on.

Did you purchase your kit with a credit card? Some cards provide coverage for accidents like this. Be worth while checking. Good luck.

You should give some serious thought to the DA 20-40 Limited. I find it excellent for walking around purposes. Prior to my acquisition of the 20-40, I would be carrying a prime for walkabouts; either a 24mm, 28mm or 35mm, so it suits me well. It depends on how you see things and what you want to shoot, and how much weight you're willing to carry. I don't particularly care much for zooms, but for the DA Limited, I'll make an exception.

edit: I wholeheartedly endorse your choice of the K-5; it's a wonderful camera. Great dynamic range, awesome image quality, not too many megapickels, outstanding value for the price. Still using mine.

A day with no wind is rare on the prairies, but from time to time they do happen. The river was like a mirror. I clambered down the steep and slippery river bank to capture some reflections. But instead, a bunch of beavers showed up; evidently they like to have a light supper at this spot as the sun goes down. Shot with the DA 20-40 at 20mm.

If I had to choose between a guy who went out and purchased a top of the line camera because his sister was getting married and needed pictures, vs an experienced wedding photographer with an iPhone, I'd pick the iPhone guy.

Shooting weddings is a skill. Cameras are tools. Excellent results can be attained with simple tools. Helmut Newton sometimes shot with an instamatic.

Me too. I don't think I've ever not used a hood. I purchase a lens and it doesn't have a hood--off to eBay I go. Generic lens hoods are China's gift to photographers :)

Nature Magpie with

I quite like Magpies. I grew up in Southern ON and moved to Saskatchewan in 2000, so I'd never seen one before then. My first encounter was in a neighbor's yard. The neighbor presented his cat with a bowl of kibble and three magpies swooped down. Two of the magpies distracted the cat by coming close enough to 'almost' get caught, while the third one stole the kibble. It went on for a while, until the kibble was gone and the magpies departed to feast elsewhere. I was impressed. Very cool birds.

They are quite common near my building and I have begun observing them. They are quite bold --the young ones especially--and it seems they enjoy harassing mammals. The other day I saw one chasing a hare around a parking lot. Then it started chasing me.

I watched the other day as a magpie landed on the curb and waited. When the light changed and the traffic came to a standstill, it hopped across the street, in the crosswalk. It was perfectly capable of flying, but , hey, why waste a walk signal?

I'm working on getting some pictures--they let you get quite close. The FA 35mm f2 is my magpie lens. Hopefully I'll have something to post here soon.

Is there anything faster than the K/35/3.5?

I've found I can get good focus results with my K35/3.5 using the camera's AF system AKA the Green Octagon. Not terribly suitable for fast action, but if you're shooting slow on stationary subjects it gives excellent results.

Best prime between focal lengths 31mm and 43mm?

I'm out almost daily with my camera, prepared for whatever catches my eye. I don't have an 'always on' lens--I tend to select a different prime every time I go out. In the last week I've been walking about with the K28/3.5, K35/3.5, DA20-40 and Takumar 50/1.4.

If I did have an 'always on' lens, it would probably be the DA 20-40; it's a great lens. But it doesn't quite meet your requirements.

Out of those you've listed, I have previously owned the K35/2, which I sold. I like the K35/3.5 better. If you can find one I recommend you buy it--I really like mine. It may be hard to focus with a split screen focus screen, but I manage quite well with the green octagon on my K5iis. And image quality is outstanding, even when minimally stopped down half a stop from wide open. I can also shoot wide open in Av mode with pleasing results. So, yeah, I'd say "go for the K35/3.5".

Which Pentax 24mm for my K1ii and K3?

I have found much happiness using the Sigma 24mm f2.8 as a walk around prime; worth considering if you want that focal length and the 'Pentax' branding isn't important. I tried the Pentax 24mm f3.5 and liked the Sigma better.

Cold Temperature issue 55-300 PL version, hood hypothesis?

So, you're still getting accustomed to your recent acquisition. Have you tested it at that focal length/subject distance before? Have you done the AF fine adjust? Some lenses are weaker at certain distances/focal lengths than others. Sometimes people sell off lenses because they give 'fuzzy' results.

I suggest you do some testing, and if the lens turns out to be faulty, see if it can be returned. Otherwise it may need repairs. Or maybe your testing will indicate you need to work on your technique.

(tiny) HOOD of HD 20-40mm Limited: is it crappy or just fine?

I've had my 20-40 since March and have been using it a lot. There have been a couple instances of off-axis flare which I use my hand to block. The flare inducing situations I have encountered would also have caused flare with a DA12-24 with stock hood, or the DA 16-50 with stock hood. I did anticipate needing a 'better' hood, and bought a couple when I ordered my 20-40, but I haven't used them--didn't see the need. The DA 20-40, IMHO. is a *wonderful* lens. Don't let the puny hood stop you from buying. I even use mine for wildlife :)

DCU5 Browsing MacOS files

I don't use DCU5, but I do use a Mac. My suggestion: download the free version of Adobe Bridge and use that for image file browsing. Right click on the image you want to process and use the "open with" command to specify DCU5 to open your file. You can use Bridge to select from however many raw converters you have installed on your computer.

Pentax in Canada - Kijiji?

There was a KP listed in Calgary a couple months ago.

Some people on kijiji are leery about shipping, but I've had some success a few times.

Import fees: You will likely need to pay PST/GST on your purchase.

Postage to Japan is *very* expensive, so if there is a problem with your purchase, make sure the seller pays for return postage.

Sun Camera repairs Pentax products in Canada. Sun Camera Service Ltd. - Home
You'd probably be better off dealing with them for repairs vs cross border shipping, taxes and the higher US dollar.

Also, The Camera Store in Calgary sells this lens for CAD $599 new with 2yrs warranty, which, with shipping, is pretty close to what you paid for yours.

You could spend some money and have it repaired, or you could spend some money and acquire another lens that's not quite as good. I suspect ROI on a repair would make it worthwhile.
