Production of black Pentax K-3 Mark III stopped???!!!

I decided to look into this on some different Japanese websites, and I found out the following.

- The J-Limited 01 camera is now officially moved to the discontinued list on Ricoh Website, but some retailers still have limited stock of individual colors. The most commonly available colour is Scarlet rouge. Ricoh themselves still have limited stock of all colors available except black.
- The K-3 III is not discontinued on Ricoh's website, but that makes sense because they don't discontinue individual colors or kits. Ricoh has all colors available of all kits.
- The K-3 III (black) is listed as a model currently in production by all online stores I can find, except Yaotomi Camera, but even Yaotomi still has stock. When you look on the Kakaku.com price comparison website, it's clear that the silver has better availability than black, but even black is available at 18 different retailers still.
- The K-3 III & 20-40 kit (black) is listed as out of production at most camera stores, but most of them have stock. Kakaku.com has this available at 14 stores, so it's availability is waning a little.

So I don't think this is quite as clear at the initial post makes it.

A few other points:
- Yaotomi is an unusually chatty retailer (via X). They often repeat what their suppliers tell them to customers. I think this is marketing to some extent. They are a small camera shop and this works to keep them in the public eye. I also think they do this as a kind of incentive to "buy while stocks last". So I trust that they were told this but it might be crossed wires or very premature to reveal.
- There have been cases in the past where products were discontinued with one "JAN" number (some kind of Japanese product identifier), and the exact same thing appeared with a different JAN number. An example was a few years ago when most of the 645 ens line-up was showing up twice with different numbers, with the old one discounted a little for clearance. I'm not talking about products that were HD updates of SMC lenses. It was exactly the same thing. I'm not sure if that might happen here, but anyway I think it's too early to say much without more retailers or Ricoh saying the product is discontinued.
- Finally, if you go trying to read the tea leaves too much, you might not like the picture that you mind creates. According to Ricoh's website, all versions the K-3 III are still current. So until something more concrete is said, probably best to take them at face value.

The K3-III was available in a jet black version. This was also available in a bundle with the 20.40 limited lens. These were a limited edition. This is likely the camera the text is referring to. I do not think there is any news in this. https://us.ricoh-imaging.com/product/pentax-k-3-mark-iii-jet-black-edition-body-kit/

When I was working (having retired 9 years ago), we needed some pictures for the wall in our office, the Department of Chemistry. I decided to take some pictures of some old glassware stills we had in the laboratory. These were taken with a Pentax K100D Super, Super-Takumar 35mm f2 lens @f8, ISO200, and an AF-280T flash bounced off a white board, with a bounce card in the flash, against some black felt backdrop. I had these individually printed on 18" x 24" canvas and mounted on frameless mounts. The three pictures were to be hung side-by-side. This was done over 11 years ago, and I recently discovered that they are still hanging on the wall in the office. :)

Ricoh publishes the news on their webpage:

PENTAX K-3 Mark III Monochrome Digital SLR CAMERA wins iF DESIGN AWARD 2024?RICOH IMAGING

The iF Design award is not easy to win and nothing you can buy. Pentax applied and won with several cameras, like K1, K-01. Nice to be recognized.

Clackers' Beginners Tip 104: The Pentax FA 77 Limited
Posted By clackers

Good morning, everyone. At the weekend, I dropped into a local furniture store. My wife hated my impulse purchase of a revolving chair, but then she sat on it.

Eventually she came round.

Now, I don't like employers putting lots of conditions on their workers. An Indian restaurant I served in years ago was so secretive I had to sign a legal contract that I wouldn't share their flatbread recipe.

It was their standard naan disclosure agreement.

So, I have the Sigma 85mm f1.4 as a quality short tele prime, but it's big and heavy, and not always suited when I do walkaround photography. I often don't feel like loading it into my minimalist bag. Owners of the amazing Pentax DFA* 85mm f1.4 might even get the same feeling.

That's when I use my FA 77 Limited, which ultimately does most of what my Sigma can do, as you can see in the K-1 picture below. Why is it one of the most sought after Pentax lenses?

In the film era of the 90s, famed Pentax lens designer Jun Hirakawa (who would later head Tamron's lens division) was behind a project to make three small but quality primes - known later by some as The Three Princesses. Eccentricity seemed to be part of the philosophy ... the focal lengths were just the start.

The first was 43mm, which he had thought for geometry reasons was ideal for naturalistic street photography. A small production run was made for Leica owners too.

Second was the 77, which he saw as a smaller version of his famous FA*85 f1.4. The last was the larger 31mm, which IIRC others in the company finished, as his original idea of a descendant of his smaller FA28 f2.8 was rejected. It's a lot bigger than the FA35, too, but ... we'll see in a future tip, it's worth it!

The reduced sizes meant design compromises, and with less glass in them he sacrificed maximum aperture and sharpness for contrast and rendering. They're made of anodized aluminium and hand assembled, and have built in lens hoods. Mine is silver, and tends to get a curious second glance by other photographers. The current versions have HD coating (see Beginners Tip 103 for explanation).

If you're looking to spend on a joyful prime, used or new, to upgrade from say, a zoom, this is one to consider - iconic, even - and a fine portrait lens. Nine rounded blades contribute to the beautiful bokeh. With just a 49mm filter size, it's compact enough to even go in a pocket.

To finish with this week, there's the story of a not very bright man named Fred who goes to a doctor.

He says, "Doc, I want to be castrated. "

The doctor says, "Look, I don't know what kind of cult you're into or what your motives are, but I'm not going to do that sort of operation. "

Fred says, "Doc, I just want to be castrated, and I'm a little embarrassed talking about it, but I have $10,000 cash right here. Will you do it? "

The doctor says, "Well, OK, I guess I could make this one exception. I don't understand, but OK. "

He puts Fred to sleep, does the trick, and is waiting at the bedside when Fred wakes up.

"Well, Doc, how'd it go?" Fred asks.

"It went fine, just fine. It's really not too difficult of an operation. As a matter of fact, $10,000 is a lot to pay for such a simple task, and I felt a little guilty about taking that much. So, while I was operating, I also noticed that you had never been circumcised, so I went ahead and did that, too. I think, it's really better for a man to be circumcised, and I hope you don't mind my... "

"CIRCUMCISED! " yells Fred. "THAT'S the word!!!"

Spencer's Camera for IR conversion, or, How Spencer's Camera broke my K200D

Oh, and also I forgot to mention I don't expect my credit card company to take the money back from Spencer's for the value of the camera. I'm talking about only the money paid for the conversion. As far as I'm concerned, I still haven't received what I paid Spencer's to do, and that is convert a camera and return it to me in satisfactory condition.

In my message to Clarence Spencer I gave him the option of reimbursing me willingly for the camera and the faulty conversion. He didn't complete what we agreed on (the conversion) and the camera is, so far, useless to anyone. Essentially, he destroyed my property. Spencer's website proclaims its craftsmanship and experience, but they haven't proven it yet. If I hire somebody to install a furnace in my house and, through the installer's negligence, it burns my house down then I expect them to pay for the damages.

If he doesn't want to pay me back then he could at least do the decent thing and replace the camera.

I'm very grateful that I have some sympathy from a moderator.

Once I started thinking something fishy was going on I did some rather intense research on Spencer's Camera reviews. One such result took me to an ongoing discussion at the Sony DSLR site, Alpha Mount World, where somebody posted a similar story to mine (I believe they were discussing a Canon G9). The poster had never written anything else on the site; the complaint about Spencer's Camera was his first and only message. Somebody there banned the user because they felt he was only using the site as a soapbox. This started a huge debate among users over whether or not the ban was warranted. There were accusations abound that AMW was "on the take" from Spencer's or was some kind of sponsor, as there were quite a few articles about infrared photography and Spencer's Camera came up often as a place to have conversions done.

I'm not going to give any opinion on Alpha Mount World. They are entitled to manage their site as they please. All I can do is repeat that I want other (Pentax) users to know what's happened.

And I appreciate all your well-wishes!

Don't use large area for birds. I use ex s spot or select. Use back button and establish the focus in the center first. If you're using shutter release for focus it will want to refocus everytime you press button. Auto area rarely works for birds. If your going to use it you really have to pay attention to where the focus ndicator squares land. Zone works pretty good for bif against a sky or a limited background. They key is establishing center focus on subject first. Watch the focus indicators as you track. If they're moving off subject, release focus and re-establish. What I do anyway.

"We have implemented a catalog price reduction on 135 format Kodak Professional TRI-X 400 Black & White Negative film.
Our two 135-format offerings will see up to a 30% reduction in Price, depending on the region."

A Real Photographer's Camera
If you love making black-and-white pictures, there's nothing quite like using a camera made for that sole purpose. Up until now, photographers in this camp had to pay exorbitant prices for a Leica M rangefinder or a converted aftermarket model, but the K-3 Mark III Monochrome makes the experience far more accessible. It's reasonably affordable, offers familiar SLR ergonomics, and includes modern conveniences such as autofocus and image stabilization. And most importantly, it produces superb images. The K-3 Mark III Monochrome ultimately lacks the cachet and full-frame sensor of the M11 Monochrom, but its practicality and reliable performance earn it our Editors' Choice award for black-and-white sensor cameras.

For one, and for the first time in a while, I am optimistic about Pentax. Afaik, this is the first time that "K-1 MIII" has been uttered by anyone officially related to Pentax. And given the remarkable discipline with which they discuss such things, I believe this was a sanctioned, deliberate disclosure intended to herald the new model (which may not happen for a while, to be sure). There also was a reveal of sorts on the other forum site from Asahi Man that the next thing Pentax is working on is something to do with the AF system from the K3 MKIII, which also likely refers to a K1 refresh/update.

Indeed, Pentax has done well as of late--this comes amid reports of the continued, persistant profitability of Ricoh's camera segment, and on the heels of the great successs of the K3 Monochrome, which built on the moderate success of the K3 MIII.

So while it may take a while to get the new K1 MIII out, in typical Pentax fashion, I'm encouraged by these latest developments. Glad I held on to my Pentax gear, and time to start saving :-)

There have been non-profitable quarters since the GR III was released.

The profits from the camera business have happened since the launch of the K-3 III and all its derivatives. Just the Monochrome, which is frequently back-ordered, must generate interesting revenues. And drive lenses sales.

Pentax film camera project: interview with Ricoh Imaging Europe

A few days away from the Salon de la Photo in Paris (5 - 8 October) Fautpaspousserlesiso.com ("don't push the isos dot com" :)), a French-speaking talk show dedicated to photo and video, interviewed many players of the photo market, including Yazid Belmadi, press relations ans sales promotion manager at Ricoh Imaging France. As a result, they published the following podcast on the 28th of September:

Episode 2 : Le marché de la photo en 2023 - Faut pas pousser les ISO

Here below the transcription of Yazid Belmadi's statement (which begins around 1h23min):

Translation by yours truly:

"Last December we announced the launch of a film camera project. Of course, the project is still on track. It will see the light of day in spring 2024 with the arrival of two cameras.

As far as the type of film camera that will be released next spring is concerned, it should, as a first draft, be two compact cameras, high-end in terms of technical specifications but not in terms of price. They will be relatively affordable. It'll be a first draft, two compact cameras, followed by SLRs, of course, which are the cornerstone of this type of cameras.

Since we announced this project in December 2022, we've had a lot of feedback from retailers and potential consumers who have told us how impatient they are to see these products arrive. There seems to be a very strong demand for film cameras.

Our strategy for quite a few years now has been to work with very, very, very niche products, and we're doing quite well. To achieve this, the Japanese management team relies on surveys of Japanese consumers, both within the brand and beyond.

As with the GR series, the project to release film cameras is the fruit of extensive consultation with a number of players in the photo industry, particularly Japanese consumers, since experience has shown us that it works quite well when you make products in response to consumer demand, as they are those primarily concerned.
"

Note: Yazid Belmadi used twice the expression "premier jet", the translation of which is "first draft". I think that he rather meant "dans un premier temps" (as a first step, to begin with, initially) or "comme première concrétisation" (as a first concrete step / outcome). However I chose not to alter his choice of words.

Pentikonian --

Apologies for missing your point.

At one level color filters can be used to increase contrast (primarily by darkening shadows), which can more-or-less be done digitally by just moving a contrast slider in Lightroom or other tool. Back in our old wet darkrooms, we could similarly do the same thing by increasing contrast during printing.

But the main use of filters is to alter how colors are rendered in B&W. I think the classic example to illustrate this is a B&W photo of a red rose. In straight (unfiltered) B&W the red of the petals and the green of the leaves are often (depending on the shade of the rose) rendered as almost identical shades of gray - not good!. Put a red filter on, and the red petals are rendered much lighter, and the green leaves are darker. Doing that digitally to a monochrome image is possible, but significantly more work than simply shooting with a filter. Hoya has a nice illustration of the effects of different colored filters at: How Black & White Filters Work ? Hoya Filters

I'm using an orange filter here for the same thing. There is a restored prairie that is part of the park that I'm working at. The prairie is currently in bloom with many yellow, yellow-orange, and orange flowers present. An unfiltered photo of an orange flower will render the petals as a light gray. Using an orange filter renders that same flower as white, while simultaneously darkening shadows in the background and highlighting the structure of the flower. Again, that could be done digitally without the use of a filter on the lens, but it would be more work.

I'm not doing much cloud photography here, but if the sky is shown, it's very helpful if there is detail in the sky, and having a filter on the lens helps bring that out.

I've been using my orange filter a lot here, but I'm mostly shooting historical sites, buildings, and objects. I understand that orange filters are also great to use in people photography as they hide freckles and blemishes.

If I were shooting in a mountainous area, I'd be using my red more. I'm shooting a local festival this weekend that the park is involved with, and I will be using a more general-purpose and less dramatic yellow filter there.

As far as polarizers go, I've not used one much here. My old B&W mentor always taught me that polarizers kill the reflections from leaves - which in color makes the tree greener, but in B&W that removes the highlights from the leaves, making the tree duller and less interesting. Of course that depends on the image you're shooting.

=-=-=-=-=-

Two furthers points on filters:
  1. The use of color filters occurs at a very different part of the process than many photographers are used to. Ansel Adams always talked about 'previsualization' - thinking about the finished image you wanted to create BEFORE you take the picture. You need to do at least some previsualization when working with filters - that's very different than how we we have been working digitally.

  2. The use of filters was much more common back in analog days for both color and B&W photography. Both pros and amateurs used filters to adjust the 'white balance' of the light we had to the film we were using, we used filters to increase contrast (polarizers), used warming filters to change how a scene looked, and we used filters to adjust how colors were rendered (B&W color filters). And if you used good filters, there was no problem.

Digital tools replaced most uses of filters. And along with the change to digital came a bias against using filters, with people saying that they're only going to degrade the image. I don't necessarily agree - I have only used quality filters - multi-coated, and from brands like B+W and Hoya (even back in my analog photography days), and have *never* seen an issue caused by a filter. We have a choice to either use a filter, or to do more digital manipulation to your image. We all need to decide which we're going to do.
