If you want to support the Pentax brand, but they (currently) don't sell something new that you want to purchase, then like the first reply said - there is no sin in buying used. It's the right thing to do for the environment, too.
Furthermore, the very next best way you can support the brand is to USE that equipment and share the best results as far and wide as you can. It's really nice to open my Flickr feed, spot something really beautiful by another photographer, and then see that their image was shot with a Pentax camera or lens. That kind of thing speaks volumes to people, I think.

Welcome Lou! Pentax definitely has a way of always drawing one back into the fold, doesn't it? The K1000 seems to be a gateway drug of sorts.
The K-3iii is, indeed, an excellent auto-focus camera (especially after you add the most recent firmware) that should work well for sports. I have the D FA 150-450mm lens, and it is (in my opinion) an excellent and fast-focusing lens that gives you a lot of reach and a lot flexibility, and it is a fast-focusing and accurate lens. It's not so heavy that you require a monopod, necessarily, so that's good. The 55-300mm has a very fast auto-focus system, but as you've pointed out it's maximum aperture makes it a little slow for a lot of sports.

Presumably you have the custom filter for "Inverse Color" enabled. You can turn that to "Off" in the digital filters.

I don't remember a formal club, per se, but I do remember receiving the (very thin) Pentax Life magazines, as well as their very, very awesome calendars that featured the work of (among others) Sam Haskins, a terrific fashion photographer and Pentax ambassador. Those were very good times for us Pentaxians. I still have one of those calendars (I mean after all, it's more or less reusable about every 7 years or so).

This was an excellent set of instructions, and I'm very grateful to photogem for taking the time to put this together and post it.
I'd ordered a K-S2 from an eBay seller in Japan who'd listed the camera as "Mint" (of course) with absolutely no issues. When it arrived, it had the bad solenoid issue straight away. I'm glad I'd hedged my bets and ordered a replacement Japanese solenoid at the same time. Using these excellent instructions, I was able to pretty swiftly (and confidently!) make the swap and immediately bring the camera to a better-than-new condition.

I have sent my cameras and lenses to Eric for several years. In addition to fixing a couple of Takumar lenses, he has done CLAs and repairs on a Pentax 67, a Spotmatic F, an LX, and probably a half dozen MX bodies. He is very good, quite honest, and especially knowledgeable. That allows him to turn things around pretty quickly, I think. And you will never find anyone who would be able to beat him on cost. If you have film era equipment, Eric is the guy.

I just pop the SD card into my computer and pull everything over to a directory and eject the card. Then I use browse the jpeg images using Ristretto (Ristretto is an image viewer for the Xfce desktop environment) and go from there. If I like working with the jpegs I will just do that in the GIMP; if I want to work with the RAW files I will do that in Darktable. I file my stuff in my own directory structure as I don't like like dealing with full-blown image managing software.

I have the "Eleventh edition with supplement," published in 1980. To answer your question regarding his treatment of K and M series cameras in comparison to the thread-mount cameras -- he doesn't really compare one system to another, nor does he "defend" a particular system. I definitely found enough difference between this last edition of his book and his earlier sixth edition (published in 1972) to make it worthwhile. Keppler knew his stuff.

I can remember buying my first MX body in the spring of 1978 -- it had the black-painted metal film tab holder on the back. By the time I bought my second MX body in the spring of 1985, they had switched to a plastic film tab holder with (as you've described) the "Asahi Opt. Co. Japan" on the the base of the tab holder. Other than that, I had never noticed any of the other subtle things you've listed. I've owned at least five other MX bodies in my life, and they have each fallen into one of the two "versions" I've mentioned (i.e., with regard to the film tab holder).

The first serious camera I worked with was a neighbor's early Spotmatic, which was already kind of an antique by the mid 1970s when I got to play with it. That camera is what caused me to pursue and stick with Pentax all these years. As fond as those memories are, however, I regret having bought a basic Spotmatic -- largely out of nostaligia -- a couple of years ago. I'd forgotten just how wonky they can be to work with, with the stop-down metering and such. In the end, I sold that and later acquired the late-model Spotmatic-F in really nice condition, which I then sent to Eric Hendrickson for a CLA. It came back working like new, and it is a terrific camera with none of that early-model wonkiness.
I would agree with both g026r as well as Bob from Aus -- (A) The camera will meter just fine with conventional 1.5v batteries, and (B) even if you don't have batteries, you get used to working without a meter and just learning how to gauge the light, because (negative) film is pretty forgiving in the end.

Amen!
Don't give up on film. At the very least, you could shoot black and white film, process that yourself (very little investment and effort involved), and then scan the negatives -- until such a point that you decide you really need to go all the way and build out a little darkroom and start printing, etc., etc. . . . :)
Regardless - welcome and enjoy your K50 !
