Sounds good. I am going to use the camera on a few top-quality Wild stereos, which include a M3Z with a PlanApo objective and the special carrier for axial viewing (thus changing the stereo into an macroscope). These and their photoports, tubes and projection lenses have all been optimized for 35mm, so full frame is better. Even more so with the compound system which I am building: it's an super-widefield Leitz Orthoplan (Leitz Orthoplan. Universal Largefield Research Microscope.). Keeping the same magnification in the light path for the camera as seen in the eyepieces and keeping these parfocal is important. So yes, I prefer full frame.

Subject movement won't often be a problem, although sometimes the specimens are alive.

I've used scopes, particularly stereos, for my work for a couple decades. They have become an important hobby as well, both the instruments themselves and what you can use them for. It's great to be able to combine photography with a Pentax and the scopes :)

---------- Post added 26th Apr 2020 at 22:56 ----------

Thanks. Autofocus isn't very high on my list of priorities so I think I'll be ok with K1 I.

---------- Post added 26th Apr 2020 at 22:59 ----------

Those are one option, sure. But I'd prefer full frame so that would narrow down the options. Also, I'd like the camera body to serve also as a regular DSLR for general photography and I happen to have a bunch of Pentax lenses... :)

P.S. Are you still shooting also with a Pentax 645D or have you focused completely on K1?

Ok, thanks. So the K-1 has the exact same functionality through a firmware upgrade? That means the original K-1 just took spot number 1 on my list. Seems that used ones are available at the same price as a new KP or even lower.

Will have to look into what are the real remaining differences (post that firmware upgrade) between K-1 and K-1 mkII. I guess the new processing unit and movement-tolerant pixel shift?

Hi,

Am interested in getting a used K-1 ii at some point. The main use would be microphotography (both on a stereo scope and on a compound). In this use, it is very important to get rid of vibrations caused by mirror and shutter movements. My question is: how well is the electronic shutter implemented in the K-1 ii compared to the Pentax KP? I would prefer full frame format but the electronic shutter issue is perhaps even more important. Any insights on this?

PENTAX KP IR online

Yes, I know his web page. There's an even better resource: Ultraviolet Photography He is one of the contributors there, too.

Those dedicated UV lenses are not for normal people, costing between 5000-8000 euros a piece. We could have afforded one at work, of course, but the focal lengths are useless for our work: the shortest of the dedicated quartz/fluorite lenses is 60mm. We need 35mm. Fortunately there are dozens of old, simple lenses that pass UV well enough. Those are what we use. It is the lack of multicoating, use of UV-passing lens cements and overall simple construction.

Sure but many like the added flexibility of having near-UV in the repertoire as well. And live view is the way to go with UV focusing anyways.

We will have visible pass -filters for purposes of normal photography for every Pentax lens that we have.

Well, the Pentax K-1 ii of my workplace is currently being modified not just for near-IR but also for near-UV, in other words a full-spectrum conversion is being done. So yes, there are some who would :)

Unfortunately we could not get any Toughpad model for a reasonable price. Actually, none of the 'tougher' pads that run Windows could be found for a reasonable price. We were thus forced to get an Android pad and are now limited to the Pentax app.

Truly sad but in our application it is absolutely essential that the device is weather proof.

Old thread but here goes. This is about stereos, not light (compound) microscopes).

Tip number one: avoid cheap scopes from China etc. like the plague.

Tip number two: don't settle for the type of camera to micrscope adapter that goes on a microscope eyepiece. Image quality will not be great. This mode is fine for a quick test and some playing around though.

Tip three: get a proper stereo microscope from one of the good brands (Wild/Leica, Zeiss, Olympus, Nikon). Doesn't have to be new if it's taken care of. My personal favorite is hands down the Swiss made Wild, which later became Leica. Contrary to expectations, that's also when certain quality aspects of the scopes also took a slight dive: certain models of Leica have plastic gears inside, unlike the proper metal gears of Wild. Make sure that the scope is of the CMO (common main objective) variety, because that means better quality and also way more attachments, as the infinity optics of a CMO allow the placement of various auxiliaries between the main optic (zoom) body and the binocular head. The most important one of these auxiliaries is the one in tip four.

Tip four: get a proper phototubus for that microscope model. There may be also some other tubes and tube lenses that you may need in addition to the phototube itself in order to achive parfocality and good image quality.

Tip five (optional): try to get a stereo microscope model that has a mechanism for displacing the objective sideways so that it coincides with left or right optical pathway, instead of the center. This is the position optimized for photo (also allows for precise measurements and correct polarization colors) and it removes parallax, improves resolution and decreases chromatic aberrations. Some newer Zeiss stereos have this, as do several Wild models.

Of course, there are also the Wild macroscopes that are completely optimized for photography. In terms of image quality they are hard or impossible to beat by any kind of stereo microscope photo setup. But you lose the ability to view in 3D through the eyepieces and some other things as well.

Yes, that helped, thanks :) According to some CPU scores and benchmarks that I was able to find, there probably isn't much difference between the two. So it looks like the Panasonic should be fine.

Most people seem to be running the app on a laptop. What kind of system requirements does it have? Would a relatively weak tablet be enough? A Panasonic Toughpad FZ-M1 for example?

This seems like a great app! Thanks for your hard work!

I am wondering about the system requirements. Would it work smoothly with the Panasonic Toughpad FZ-M1? There are also some cheaper alternatives in that series, such as FZ-X1 and some are apparently based on the Atom architecture, i.e. they are not hugely powerful, even though must better than the "old" Atom-based stuff a decade ago. Has anyone experience on those or info on minumum system requirements of the app?

Yes, definitely have to make sure that the corrective lens -if we need to go that route- is indeed glass and without any kind of coatings or lens cement. Both of those can cause partial or complete blocking of UV...there's a reason why there apparently zero zoom lenses that have decent UV pass through, even among the legacy oldies!

Good tips on the possible infinity issue, thanks!

I'm resurrecting an old thread but here goes...

The best microphotography tools among the stereo or dissecting scope types that are intended to look at 3D objects/specimens would be the Wild (Leica) macroscopes due to their optical path which is completely optimized for imaging. That's the sole purpose of those instruments! And that is no typo, they are called _macroscopes_, not microscopes. They do also have a binocular head with eyepieces for viewing but the image you see is not 3D stereoscopic, unlike on any "normal" stereomicroscope. It is 2D just like the images. There's a few models but the best ones with APO zoom objectives will cost you 1500 euros to 3000 euros used, depending on what auxiliaries come with it. That is the Rolls Royce of 3D reflected light imaging microscopy (as opposed to light microscopy using glass slides and thin specimens plus light going through the sample) :)

But there are very good quality cheaper options, especially with the Wild / Leica system which has unparalleled modularity and very good optical quality combined with top workmanship and materials (especially the old Wild scopes). Stay away from the Russian and Chinese cheap options unless you have literally no budget.

I am currently building a hobby microphotography system around my Wild M7S, the Wild HV trinocular phototube and Pentax K5 IIs. A special -and important- bonus of the M7S compared to many other Wild scopes and other makes is that one can use the objective on two distinct positions. Firstly on the middle for normal work through the eyepieces with full 3D view and secondly slightly displaced to one side (the photo position). In the second position the light travels on a single path instead of two, and this takes away parallax problems, most of the chromatic aberration problems and also gives higher resolution for the images.

Thanks! Yes, the UV focus shift is a known problem, especially with the legacy lenses that are not dedicated to UV. Not a problem with live view though. With the brute force time lapse approach this just needs to be accounted for when setting the focus before a takeoff. Perhaps that correction lens is also a possibility. I will definitely look at the WIFI commander, sounds great! Thanks!

Yes, I read about that hack. But as you say, I'd be a little hesitant to do that to a 5000-6000 euro lens :-D Furthermore those two UV-lenses that exist for the F-mount aren't the most desirable focal lengths as one is 105mm and the other is 60mm. The 60mm might do, but I rather like the idea of getting 50mm, 35mm and 21mm byt using those old legacy lenses and spending a total of circa 500 euros max. Leaves money for other stuff.

Might be easier but would be way more expensive, even with keeping the high price of this equipment in mind. We need to do these aerial scans many times, each time 72 vegetation plots of circa 2m x 3.5m so knowing a bit about their fees for just fieldwork of one day, those type of consultant companies would totally bankrupt us in no time.

SharperShape do look very professional but their service products and expertise aren't suited to our research needs. Like you said, they're more into power line mapping etc.

I suppose you did not read some of my comments?

Full spectrum conversion gives the flexibility to use UV, IR, visible light or a combination of those spectra. It is easily possible to get down to 320nm UV which is pretty good. And no, you only sacrifice the warranty, not the camera. By using lens front filters you can still take visible light images as normal.

We want to use the K-1 because it has sensor shake reduction which greatly helps with longer exposure times that are unavoidable with UV in particular, especially when it's not sunny. It is absolutely fabulous that this feature works also with the obscure legacy lenses that we will use for UV! Canon or Nikon are at a huge disadvantage there. The strong high ISO performance of K-1 will also be of great use in UV by keeping shutter times reasonable in cloudy conditions. When doing visible light or IR scans we use Pentax DFA 50mm f1.4 giving us complete weather shielding - an absolute bonus. And finally, the same camera system will also be used on a tripod on the ground, where pixel shift will be useful to have in some applications. Actually, Canon can't really hold a candle in our applications...

Finally, we intend to also use our sensors with the drone so we need the payload capability anyways. Why then choose a lighter and worse camera? We can get quite nice flying time by having 3 battery packs anyways. When the first one is depleted, it goes to charging immediately and the cycle will give us quite a bit of useful working time per day.

Thanks for the input, much appreciated!

1. I have thought of something like that, i.e. a gentle hack :-) However, let's first see what the reply and subsequent correspondence with Pentax Surveying reveals about the UP-1!

2. Yes, we are planning to use pre-programmed flight plan for the most part. It also removes any operator delay, thus saving precious flight time. A battery pack costs around 700 euros so we can't just buy ten of them :-D We'll likely get three sets as that should give a pretty good work flow (apparently takes about 90min to charge).

3. This is true. However, one of the two locations is a rather open fen with no tree canopy to obstruct. The other one is a dry pine forest but not overly dense so we'll see.

4. That's exactly what I had in mind: to use the DoF calculator for each lens being used. I also thought that at the heights we're going to use, depth of focus should be pretty good. So thanks for verifying! Depending on what legacy lenses we end up buying, we will likely use a 35mm f3.5 and a 50mm f2.8 or f4.0 for the UV shoots and Pentax new DFA 50mm f1.4 for visible light and IR scans. Yes, you are right: no AF with the UV work.

5. Most definitely! I have already started by diving into a few oases of information on UV:
35 mm lenses for UV
Ultraviolet Photography
Both sites contain a wealth of information and links!

I will definitely keep updating this thread as we progress :-) It will take months just to make the choices, purchase equipment and assemble it. But hopefully some time in the summer we will start the actual work!
