Any K mount lens that's more macro than macro (ie, micro)

Thanks for these comments. I actually have a Pentax 50mm macro lens for my K5. Photoptimist, would I therefor look for k mount tubes/bellows that are 100mm and 150mm long for the 2x and 3x?

Also what should one expect for depth of field. I imagine its rather small.

Thank!

Hi. Can anyone recommend a lense solution for those interested in photographs that have something greater than the 1x maginification of the macro lenses? I'm thinkiing about something 2x to 4x.

I'd lie to photograph small insects (eg .25") but use as much as the sensor as possible for the image.

Thanks!!!

What does it mean when a lens is "made for the aps-c sensor"

Hi. I've read ads and reviews of lenses that say the lense is "made for the aps-c sensor". What does that really mean? Is it expected to not be optimal for (future?) full frame cameras?

OK. Other option is to wait for the Pentax digital full frame. (It's availability is just around the corner you know. Has been for years! :D )

Maxfied_photo, that DA* 55 f/1.4 seems like the best solution, although, at 55mm wouldn't the portrait photographer still have to put his camera farther back than in his full-frame days. Or, does the lens offer some built-in telecompression. (Product descriptions don't mention this.)

Anyway, at ~$800, it's beyond my reach right now.

Interesting thread. My question has to do with full-frame vs APS-C for the studio portrait photographer. Assume:

1. A former full-frame film studio photographer migrates to digital APS-C camera (assuming digital full frame is out of their price range), and
2. The photographer continues to take pictures with a 70mm to 90mm lens (for the usual reason: To achieve a flatter effect than the standard 50mm lens)

Is this photographer resigned to placing the camera 50% farther from his subjects than he did formerly in order to achieve the same field of view? If so, I should think this would be an issue for small studios, or for on-site portraits where space is an issue. Are there lenses, or lens adapters, that can be used to effectively squeeze the image on the sensor plane so that it fits on the sensor, so that the full frame field of view is simulated?

Thanks much in advance for your reply.

Hi. Can anyone recommend the Google NIK pluggins as improving upon the built-in photo editing features of LightRoom? I'm not interested in artsy photo modifications, just basic features like sharpening and brightness adjustments.

Thanks.

Any general benefits to firmware 1.03 for k-5iis?

Hi all. My Pentax k-5 iis still has firmware 1.00 on it. Are there general areas where I might see benefits from upgrading to a more recent firmware rev?

I don't use bounce flash (an area where I understand there's an exposure fix benefit to 1.03), and I just use the standard 18mm-55mm zoom and the 1.4mm fixed. I just use it for basic photography.

I hesitate to proceed with just as part of regular maintenance, give some claims about freezes. But if there's good reason to upgrade (new menu features, better focus with above lenses, etc.), then it might be worth the risk.

Thanks much.

Possible to install older version of firmware?

Hi all-
  • Is it possible to replace a Pentax camera's firmware version with an older one, if a newer one is giving unexpected trouble (eg, for certain operations).

  • If possible, is there a firmware archive available? I can only find the latest version on the Pentax site.

I've had a k-5 iis (with the f1.4 fixed, and the 18mm-55m zoom) for about a month, and it still has firmware 1.00 on it. Apart from general camera maintenance, I'd like to see if an upgrade fixes some (real or perceived, not sure yet) focus issues.

Thanks in advance.

kh1234567890, what do you mean by "expanded live view"? I can find "live view" in the manual, but not "expanded live view". Thanks. -Kurt

How to know if my K-5iis is getting optimal focus?

All-
  1. Please advise if there's a way to know if one's camera/lenses are producing the sharpest possible pictures. Recently I've been making practice shots from my new K-5iis using the Pentax 18-55mm Zoom and the Pentax 50mm f1.4. I'm finding that with pictures taken with either lens, it is rare that I can zoom in to a picture (using the one mouse click method on an image in Windows Lightroom) and see edges as sharp as a screen pixel. Perhaps this is more than I can expect -- ie, that when I do this zoom, it could be pushing beyond the pixel density of the camera's sensor. (The monitor is 1680 x 1050). But it would be nice to know somehoe that the system is performing at optimum level.

  2. Related: Should I be seeing a big difference between the clarity of shots taken with the the 18-55mm zoom vs the 50 mm f1.4? When I set the zoom at approx 50mm, I'm very hard put to see a difference in sharpness. The f1.4 is certainly faster in low light, but as for sharpness, I'm not so sure.

Much obliged in advance for your comments.

What are downsides of using in-camera lens corrections?

Can anyone explain the downsides of using in-camera lens corrections? (eg, in a k-5 IIs, turning on distortion correction and chromatic aberration correction. The default is that these are set to off.)

Do experienced photographers normally make these corrections and, if so, is it done with editing software instead of in-camera?

Thanks.

Hi all. Can anyone recommend a photo editing software package? I read a lot of good things about Lightroom, and I'm OK with its price range (~$120).

I'm a newbie with a new K-5 IIs and a Windows 7 PC.

Thanks!

Hi. Can any of you recommend a printing service (online or brick/morgar) whose printing process takes full advantage of the detail in large digital files?

I recently bought a k-5 iis and want to be able to get prints (color and black/white) with the hi-res I expect to capture with this camera.

Thanks in advance.

Hi all. Can anyone offer some advice on what speeds of memory card are recommended for the k-5 ii/iis? I just bought this camera and want to make sure I don't get one that's too slow. The manual doesn't seem to have guidance on this topic.

My use will be 98% pics, 2% movies. I also might want to do the 5x frames/sec on occasion.

Also, are there any brands I should stay away from?

Thanks.

Best camera/lens for photographing negatives
Posted By Kurt Euler

I'm considering purchasing a DSLR pentax (to replace my antique ME Super). I'm interested to know if anyone can recommend a camera and, more importantly, the right lens for photographing negatives.

I have a box full of old black and white negatives, many the old 120 format (nearly 3" by 5"), that I'd like to photograph. (I'd then invert the images and print them.) Yes, I know that scanners might be better quality, but the speed of a camera would offset the loss in quality.

I'm thinking a lens that could focus sharply on a flat surface 2 to 3 feet away would be what I want.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.
