Hiya,
I bought my K-5 last year with the 18-135mm lens. I love the K-5 but wasn't too impressed with the 18-135. So before spending fortunes on more modern and possible disappointing lenses I decided to start buying some old Pentax manual lenses from eBay - its brilliant! They are loads of old prime lenses (24mm, 28, 50mm, 100mm) and loads of auto-focus zooms (100-300mm) etc. My Pentax-A 50mm F1.4 is just astonishing and although its not 'perfect' for lots of conditions, the results are always so great that its my most used lens.
IMHO Buying budget 'one-size-fits-all' super zooms to save money is a false economy, I would recommend buying some old lenses, having fun with them and see what type of photography you end up doing, then when you are really sure, you can spend $800-1200 on exactly the lens you know you will use.... actually, I am still in the 'having fun with old Pentax primes' stage!

Great stuff, yes, the 2nd photo is great. Actually, I was looking for a place to post my first HDR efforts, so I thought I'd post them here!
I created this from 3 bracketed photos of +/- 2 ev steps and used 'Qtpsfgui' + 'hugin-tools' (Ubuntu) to create the HDR image.

There seems to be a lot of good advice here. I recently bought a K-5 with the 18-135 as a good multi-purpose option. However, I have been buying a few old primes from eBay and playing around with these before I would even consider forking out for one of the current range of primes - this gives me the opportunity to see I how I get on with using a range of less flexible non-weather proof lenses. I bought an old 40-80mm Pentax M, Sigma 28mm super-wide and a Sigma 24mm, all old, all manual and in total about £100 for the three of them.

I also own a K-5 and bought a Power Zoom 100-300 from ebay. Although the lens is usable, the powered zoom works, none of the 'fun' Power Zoom functions seem to be available - I dont know if this is because there is a problem with the lens or the K-5 does not support them.
I am a bit dissapointed as the K-5 manual and website clearly states that Power Zoom lenses are supported.
With modern SLR's having video recording capabilities, these additional Power Zoom functions become even more interesting...
I have asked Pentax support about this... I'll post the reply (which is likely to be ambiguous, defensive and non-committal :-)
PS: although I am not an experienced photography, I think the lens is great, especially with the K-5 SR system.

Although this behaviour seems strange it does guarantee that each photo in the sequence is taken at exactly the same interval. For example over a 24 hour period that might change from bright sunshine to complete darkness, the shutter speed will vary greatly (eg: maybe from 1/2000 - 20 seconds) to get the correct exposure. So if you want to take a photo exactly every 10 minutes, the implemented behaviour would guarentee this
But the alternative behaviour that where the interval time is just the time between exposures would result in a variance and unpredictability of exactly when a photo will be taken...
But maybe there could be an option for this:
- "Set total interval time" (current behaviour)
- "set exposure interval time" (just time between exposures)
