I can confirm this. I had this issue with my phone where the BT was only reconnected, when the phone was on.
Since the updates (cannot tell if the K3III 1.10 or the ImageSync update was the one) it works fine. Had a shooting a few days ago with 900+ images and turned off the camera a couple of times. Not one image without GPS info.

Just did a short test where I started the ImageSync background transmission even before switching on the camera. Even this works now. They did a good job! :)

Ok, thanks for the clarification. That means, that electronic shutter is used in OVF and LV mode. At least for continuous shooting.
ehm... well... that makes sense. The documentation doesn't talk about live view anywhere. The confusion was just in my mind... :o The german documentation also mentions that it is called "electronic/mechanical aperture" instead of shutter due to an translation error. They already know it

Yes, I just updated and wondered why there is that mix in OVF mode where the first image is taken with mechanical shutter (sounds like) and the rest of the sequence in cont. shooting is taken with ES. Somehow strange, because the camera is not in live view mode at that time. I would expect to use the mechanical shutter for single and continuous shooting (as the K-1 does).

An other strange thing I came across: The continuous AF seems not to work at all in live view (with the 18-135 lens at least). No matter if electronic or mechanical shutter is selected. The camera is set to AF tracking (in LV), and the focus point tracks the initially focussed object but when I move away with the camera, everthing gets blurry but focus does not move... Never had tested this prior to the 1.10 update tough.

BTW: The german translation for the electronic shutter is "Elektronische Blende" which means "electronic aperture"...

Thats a good idea... I just tried to try it... But doesn't work so far.
The camera only connects via the MTP protocol (media transfer protocol) to the pc and does not allow to copy data onto the card. It allows to delete captures images and the "date" folder though. But doesn't allow to delete the "DCIM" folder.
The camera isnt connected like an usb drive, it is a "digital camera" in windows explorer that is handled differently.

It's a bit strange because one of the ways to update the firmware is - according to the documentation - to copy the file via USB to the card in the camera. Tried this even with an firmware file but nothing is written.

BTW: You can switch from MTP protocol to CD Rom but this just brings up the windows and mac installer of their software - which I think is the most expensive way to distribute software packages...

PS: The K-1 is simply connected as a usb drive an the card inside the K-1 can be written from WIndows... (K-1 can be switched from PTP (picture transfer protocol, a predecessor to MTP) and MSC (Media Mass storage class, like any USB drive)

Yes, all test were done with DNG. Note that I didn't shoot exactly 15 seconds but a few seconds more. I only counted the images during the first burst plus those that were taken up to the 15s mark. The buffer clear time then was measured after releasing the shutter. But anyway, doesnt matter if 70MB/s or 60MB/s to me. I just expected a lot more with UHS II.

Thats in fact very interesting. This means that those cameras don't write faster too. Just looking at UHS II speed, I'd expect more fps after the buffer is full. Maybe this isn't possible at all.
I'll take a look at tests of some other "fast" cameras. Maybe we're not as bad as I thought...

With interface I meant the UHS I card bus interface. As far as I know, this bus can handle up to 104 MB/s * (312MB/s for UHS II Half Duplex).

Using my SanDisk Extrem PRO SD UHS II USB C Reader (the one with the short USB cable) I get
89 MB/s reading and 84 MB/s writing with the 170MB/s card and
308 MB/s reading and 262 MB/s writing with the 300MB/s card

* I read that the 170MB/s UHS I card really can handle the 170MB/s in at least one SanDisk card reader. I don't know how this works and if they use a proprietary protocol. Would like to hear from someone who knows :) It seems that even the 170MB/s card is of course less than 100MB/s in "standard" UHS I readers... But let me know if I'm wrong here!

Hi!

Today I did some more tests (already posted the result on "the other" forum :o) with a comparison of a 300MB/s UHS II card and a 170MB/s UHS I card. Both tested in both slots. There is not much difference at all. The UHS II card in the UHS II slot has the worst performance though.

The cards are a SanDisk Extreme Pro 170MB/s V30 UHS I card with 128GB.

and a SanDisk Extreme Pro 300MB/s V90 UHS II card with 64GB.

In the PC I get a write speed of 86MB/s and a read speed of 96MB/s in an internal UHS I USB 3 reader for the 170MB/s card. That's pretty much what the interface can handle.
The 300MB/s card does 220-250MB/s writing on the PC (UHS II USB C card reader from SanDisk).

I measured both cards in both slots and get a data rate of around 60MB/s in each of the slots. (a bit less in Slot 2).

The speed of the 170MB/s UHS I card, compared to my 300MB/s card which makes 56MB/s in Slot 1 and 63MB/s in Slot 2 it is almost the same speed at one-sixth of the cost.

Here are my masurements from top to bottom:
170MB/s in Slot 1:
37 Pics for first burst, total of 65 pics during first 15s, 13,6s for clearing buffer, 61MB/s

170MB/s in Slot 2:
36 Pics for first burst, total of 62 pics durinfg first 15s, 12,8s for clearing buffer, 60MB/s

300MB/s UHS II in Slot 1:
36 Pics for first burst, total of 60 pics during first 15s, 13,8s for clearing buffer, 56MB/s

300MB/s UHS II in Slot 2:
36 Pics for first burst, total of 63 pics during first 15s, 11,9s for clearing buffer, 63MB/s

Note that the time for clearing buffer differs slightly due to my reaction time because here I watch the LED with my eyes and then pressed the shutter again.

The camera settings were all the same:
Manual focus, manual mode, 1/8000s, open aperture, ISO 100, lens cap closed (gets all black pictures), DNG only output, SR off, ISO noise reduction off

So I'd say, instead of buying expensive UHS II cards, maybe save your money for the next (Pentax??) camera because I see really no benefit of using UHS II cards.

Btw: The price is
180 € for the 300MB/s V90, 128 GB vs
28 € for the 170MB/s 128GB

Battery Icon/ Battery life.

I was out a couple of times the last weeks with the Mark III for 1-3 hours. Taking more than 300 shots, mostly with continuous shooting. All with the DFA 150-450. GPS transfer via Bluetooth on (as long as it was connected to my phone, but that's another thing...). Kept the camera at least in standby all the time and never had less than 2/3 of battery (one of the three segments off). I don't think that the 70-200 drains the battery more than the 150-450.
I have the back lcd on, but with energy savings to high (don't know how the menu is titled in english, the thing where the back lcd shuts off faster). Also a lot of replay of the images.

And: I have different batteries (original D-Li90). I don't know which one is in the camera. Some of them are more than 5 years old and still work fine.

Two things that come in mind: Do you have the the latest 1.01 firmware? They say they improved stability when battery power is low. Maybe it also changed the display of battery power (haven't looked at that before and after updating).
And how often did you charge that battery by now? New LiIon batteries need a few cycles before getting full power.

From what I know by now of that camera and previous models (K-5, K-1) i'd expect at least 500 photos from one battery without any problem (maybe except if you constantly use live view). I even 'managed' to leave the camera switched "on" (it switched to standby of course) when putting it in the backpack and noticed the next day... Without any big drain of the battery.

I would suggest to update to fw 1.01 if not already done and make a few (3-5) cycles of using the battery until the camera says "empty" and then fully charging it again.

I think the theory with the evil witch is the most likely so far.

I guess I'll do some more tests and send them to ricoh support. Maybe they can tell me if this is ok.

I agree that the data rate can not always be reached because of internal processing, etc. But the question then is, why UHS II, why ultra fast expensive cards if the camera only uses less than 100MB/s.
And yes, it's way faster then my K-1. I already was able to get shots that I would have missed otherwise. So I'm still impressed by the K-3 III and I like that camera. But I'd like to know if this is normal or not...

So, if it's only a marketing gag, it worked. At least for me.... :o

Yes, I know. Its different to the K-1 and I triple checked the numbering.

I already took a look into the slots with a flashlight to see that there are really more contacts on the slot at the back of the camera...

With the UHS II card in the UHS I slot I get even a bit more images during 30 seconds. The first burst until the buffer fills is the same but after the buffer is full the rate is a bit higher (but not as constant) as in the Slot 1 (UHS II). At a total its about 65MB/s which I'd say it's ok for UHS I.

Here you can see my measurements. Same settings, same card. upper one is in Slot 1(UHS II, the fast one....), lower one is in Slot 2.

Maybe anyone could repeat this to proof my camera has a problem...?

Well, thats a good point. Indeed, I had the automatic noise reduction switched on. After switching off, I feel like getting some more performance (31 images in the first burst instead of 28). But thats minimal. Still get less than 60MB/s transferred to the card.

So I wonder why UHS II and expensive cards.

there must be something wrong...

Hi everybody,

yes, I know there are already a few threads about UHS II in the K-3 III. But these threads did not answer my question about the real speed of a UHS II card in the camera.

I did some tests and came to the conclusion, that my K-3 III with my SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS II 64GB 300MB/s V90 writes only 50-70 MB/s to the card.

How did I test? I recorded the shutter sound with audacity so I could make relatively precise measurements.

I first burst shoot until the buffer was full, waited until the LED went out and then pressed the shutter once again to have a acoustic mark in the recording.
The burst was 28 pictures which was in sum 932MB of data (DNG only). The LED went out after a total of 19 seconds (beginning to count with the first shutter click). Thats 932MB/19s = 49MB/s.

Clearing the full buffer takes about 15-16 seconds.

Another test: After the burst, when the shutter slowed down I kept on shooting until 30 seconds. I counted the images during these 30 seconds and added the time to clear the buffer (LED stays out). The number of images multiplied with the size (roughly) diveded by the time givs me 56MB/s.

Another test: After the buffer is full and the shutter slowed down, I took a look at the recorded shutter sound and counted the number of pictures during 20 seconds. It was 34 images in 20 seconds. With roughly 35MB per image thats 34*35 / 20 = 59 MB/s.

So, no matter how I count, the result is always way from the UHS II speed of 300MB/s (even much lower than UHS I with 104MB/s).

The card in the PC (with SanDisk Extreme Pro USB C UHS II card reader) on the other side writes between 220 and 250MB/s and reads between 270 and 300MB/s.

camera settings: manual focus, 1/4000, F5.6, DNG, card in slot 1 (the one on the back side of the camera), High continuous shooting

What is your experience with UHS II cards in that camera. Is the speed I get normal or is there something wrong?

BTW: A 170MB/s UHS I card is a bit slower, here I get 40MB/s with a clearing time of 21 seconds. But thats still too low for UHS I

I am curious.....

The background transmission has to be turned on in order to get gps data while the phone is off.

Still, my problem is that after switching off/on the camera it does not reconnect to the phone via bluetooth. Told that to the german ricoh support and they answered me, they could not reproduce this problem. I tested this with an other phone (samsung galaxy A3) and voila, there it works. It's just my sony phone that does not reconnect properly...

K-3 III and Image Sync Instructions

I did some more tests and realized that the bluetooth connection is not re-established when not using the ImageSync app. I could easily pair the cam to the phone with the standard android bluetooth pairing. But after switching off/on the cam, the bluetooth is not reconnected (like it is done with all other bluetooth devices I know, like earphones, smartwatch, etc.)

I would expect that at least the "basic" bluetooth connection can be established without the ImageSync app.

To me, this seems like a bug in the cam firmware... Looks like the ImageSync app is somehow triggering the reconnection. And this only after the phone is woken up.

I'll try to sort up these observations and get in contact with ricoh. Hopefully they can fix this behaviour.

Thank you a lot for your very detailed description. Looks like an official document but way better :)

I hope, the image sync will be improved very soon. I still have big problems reconnecting bluetooth after the cam was off or in standby. I can reproduce the behaviour almost 100% when the phone and cam are off and I switch on the cam. The bluetooth stays disconnected until I switch on the phone (don't even have to unlock the phone, just switching on the display is ok).
The image sync app is excluded from power saving and the background transmission is set to 1 hour.

The only thing I want to achieve is gps geotagging. I don't care about the remote control function or wifi image transfer etc (at least at the moment). Too bad, it doesn't work properly currently.

I will go through your doc once again, maybe I missed something.

BTW: May be also a problem with the phone... Its a sony Xperia XZ1 compact (G8441)

Thanks a lot to all!

At least I now understand that this is somehow normal behaviour.

Last time I used the DA*300 but also made the same experience with the DFA 24-70. I guess the subject distance was also too near. I'd say 5-15 meters. Round about... And of course AF.C and continuous shooting in high. Other settings: Av mode from full open to 1-2 LV stepped down, auto iso usually up to 800 or 1600.

Next time, I'll try with back button focus. When you use it, what's the prefered setting? Setting 1 to allow the shutter to also be used to focus or setting 2 to disable the focussing on the shutter button?

And don't get me wrong: I love that camera. The autofocus is not really a problem for me since I mostly do landscape and macro. But from time to time I get a friends dog in front of the lens

I guess I'll prepare a user setting for this to be ready faster next time :D

AF.C and focus priority

Hi Folks,

I was wondering why I get a lot of unsharp pictures of dogs running towards me from my K-1. That's not about the always-bad Pentax autofocus!

I set my camera to AF.C, continuous shooting and the settings for both "1st Frame action in AF.c" and "Action in AF.c Cont." to Focus-priority. I thought this would disable the shutter release until the subject is in focus.
In AF.S this works like expected. When I instantly full press the shutter button with a focus preset to infinity on the lens, the shutter releases only after focussing or does never release when the subject could not be focussed (e.g. too near)

I made the same test in AF.C and see what happens: The shutter releases at once and even if I'm too near to focus at all. Even the continous shooting works without ever getting in focus, I can produce 4.4 completely blurred images per second... :o

This is not what I understand from "focus priority" and then what's the difference to "release-priority"??

Can anyone explain this behaviour or give me a hint what I might do wrong?

BTW: Same situation on my K5.

Thanks and best regards,
Christian

PH-RBD Lenshood (from DA 50-200) on DFA 100 WR?

Hi!

Does anybody know (or can test) if the lenshood PH-RBD that comes with the DA 50-200 WR fits on the DFA 100 WR (which has the PH-RBE hood).
I know that both are 49mm but they still can have different mounts.

Background: Lots of pentax lens hoods have the small opening to handle a polarizing filter with the hood attached. But not the hood from the DFA 100 WR where I'd need it most :(

Thanks in advance!

battery cover for D-LI 90 (K-5/K-7) batteries!

Hi everybody!

I was looking for a cover to protect the contacts of my K-5 batteries while carrying them in the pocket. The K10D batteries had such a cover to snap on but the K-7/K-5 batteries don't.

So I decided to create my own cover that can be snapped to the bottom of the battery. As a special feature, it has embossed labels "empty" and "full" each on one side of the cover. This labels can be used in conjunction with the little arrow on the top of the battery to distinguish used from charged batteries.

The cover was created with a 3D printer at shapeways. If you are interested, you can order it at [removed by moderator].Have fun!
