I did a quick check with mine. Tried to turn the ring as quickly as I could, but could not see any difference no matter which way I turned the scale. Seems to be the same both ways.

My grandfather was an avid photographer from the 1930īs onwards. I have lots of his shots, both prints and glass plate negatives. I even have the camera he used for taking those.
In this picture we have my grandparents with their two sons, and grandpaīs motorcycle in the early 30īs.

Over the years I have tried several third- party batteries. Some of them are outright rubbish, but the Hahnel is the best of the generic ones I have tried, providing about 3/4 of the capacity and lifetime of the OEM batteries.

I spent a couple of weeks boating in the archipelago along the south coast of Finland.
I just love those old fishing villages, like going back a hundred years in time! These are all K1 Mk II shots with DFA 24-70 and Sigma 300/2,8.

Bonjour from France & question on legacy / vintage K-mount compatibility

The two power contacts were introduced way back in the 1980īs or 1990īs to provide power for the Power Zoom lenses. Thereafter many - but not all - Pentax DSLRīs have the contacts as more functions have been added to the lenses. I am not aware of any compatibility issues with the power contacts.
Is your lens this one ? Sigma Mirror 600mm F8 Lens Reviews - Sigma Lenses - Pentax Lens Review Database If so, it should work fine. Do you know whether the lens mount has been assembled correctly?

Increasing image size

Many printers routinely ask for 300 ppi just to be on the safe side. However in real life it is not this straightforward, you can often get excellent results also with less pixels. This is very image dependent, and of couse the original image has to be a really good one. I have made a 1m x 1,5m print for gallery use out of a K-10 10Mpx file, and it looked just fine. This was really pushing it beyond its limits, and took guite a lot of tweaking in PS. I did not upsample the image, but did add some very slight texture to it. Upsampling did not really work with this image. It really depends a lot on what you have in the image. You probably need to make a couple of test prints to find out what works best in your case.

Who printed Cibachrome?

I used to print a lot on Cibachrome/Ilfochrome from the 80īs well into this century. The vibrant colours and the supeb gloss of the glossy paper are hard to match still today! The harsh contrast - combined with the characteristics of slide films - was the biggest drawback of the material.
I still have several 40cm x 60 cm prints hanging on the walls looking as good as new.

Question for owners of flatbed Epson and Canon scanners

As mentioned above, the lid and the hinge are usually not the critical things here. In my Canoscan 8600F the original film holder positions the negative some 0,6-0,7 mm above the glass plate of the scanner.
The resolutions figures stated by scanner manufacturers are often quite high. The scanners make big files all right, but the achievable real-life resolution is nearly always much lower as the optical quality sets the upper limit. Flatbeds are fine for medium format films, but for 35mm films it takes a dedicated film scanner to get all the information out of the film.

K-3 III tested

The leading photography magazine in Finland Kamera-lehti published a K-3 III test in itīs November issue http://www.kamera-lehti.fi/testit
All in all a very positive report. It is really a long time since I have seen a Pentax DSLR being praised for its AF performance! Other things they liked were ergonomics, user interface, and the wide range of functions and features. The solid construction was also mentioned.
As you might expect they were not exactly impressed with the video capabilities and the fixed rear display.

They also tested the DA 18-135 F3.5-5.6 ED AL(IF)DC WR. Light and sharp with some chromatic aberration especially at longer focal lenghts.

I use the big Sigmas (300/2,8 and 500/4,5) mainly for wildlife photography. I find the K-1 II easier to handle with these big lenses than crop bodies. For the same reason I allways have a grip in my APS-C bodies. With the 500 I often have a monopod.

As a wildlife photographer I would definitely keep the faster lenses. Many animals are nocturnal, and no matter how high ISOs you have, eventually you run out of light. The more leeway you have, the better.

K-1 Lens Advice

I have been shooting with the DFA 24-70 for a couple of years now. Size and weight are what you would expect from a FF f 2,8 zoom. In terms of image quality it is definitely a good lens, but not a stellar one. Sharp in the center already wide open. Stopping down a little improves corner sharpness. Wide open there is a fair amount of vigneting. This is easy to correct in PP, but it still is an annoyance. I quess this is why Pentax did not give it a star rating.
