Hello! Did you use this on a K-1? Looks like it in the one picture but just wanted to make sure. I'm looking for a higher zoom this year for birds. I love my Sigma 70-200 f/2.8, but I'm just not getting close enough for some of the eagle nests here. Was the lower speed much of a problem for you? Thank you.

Bahtinov Mask!!! I printed mine out, cut the holes out with an exacto knife, then taped it down for focusing. Works perfectly and GREATLY assists.

Heading out in 12 hours...wish me luck! Hoping to get some new shots and plenty of other light frames for stacking. Any recommendations? I'm in the northern hemisphere at 34° lat.

That's right, I forgot it was you and I that were talking about this before. I just didn't realize how expensive the program was. My frustration is always trying to get the pic looking decent with the settings in DSS after I stacked it. That's why I want PixInsight to hopefully assist me with those steps after the photo has been stacked. I'm sure it's all just user error and me not fully understanding what the heck is going on.

I was happy to be able to get some really decent images without having to stack anything. Does anyone here use PixinSight? I remember talking to one member here about and I just now checked the price. It seems really expensive but DSS is driving me nuts. Think I'll download the trial soon.

From what I hear we (The US Marines) may be expanding there so maybe someday I can get stationed down there. If not then I'm definitely going to visit sometime in my life.

Sure thing- I used a Pentax K5 with a cheap Quantaray 70-300mm lens all the way @300, f/5.6, 6 different shots, three at iso800 and three at iso1600. I used my AstroTrac for guiding and Deep Sky Stacker for stacking. The total exposure time was 16 minutes. Had to work it a bit in Photoshop too cos the lens quality isn't so great but for a couple years ago when I was first getting started I thought it wasn't too bad. I switched it to b/w cos the colors really weren't all that great. There was a lot of fringing and false colors, again cos the $100 lens I used. Now everything I shoot is through my Orion ED80mm which I'm VERY satisfied with so far. I'm glad you like it. I'd love to see the southern hemisphere skies. Maybe someday...

I really like your laser pointer finder idea. That's awesome! And AMAZING wide field shot of Orion. Is your camera modified at all? I'm currently stationed in Japan and it's rain season here so I haven't been able to capture anything. Also what stacking program do you use? Thanks!

Hello fellow AstroTrac owner! Great shots here. I haven't posted here for quite some time. Been really busy with work. Your shots look great. I'll post an image of my current setup on here sometime. (There may be one on my profile, not sure). Looking forward to more awesome pictures!

Yeah, nothing but smog here. I can get above it for things high in the sky but anything near the horizon is usually a waste of time. The mountain I usually go on is 540m so it's a better view than sea level.

Thanks Jack! Yep, it's a stack of about 9 or 11 exposures. Unfortunately I don't remember cos I was just messing with the different settings in DSS and was excited at how that one turned out. It's about 29 minutes total exposure time. Thanks again!

There's a place in Hiroshima called Saeda. It had a big pink elephant on the sign. If you ever come up here it's at the end of Hondori street. The price tag said ¥89,700 and I told the guy I was interested in it and he said 'hold on' and came back with a yellow stickie that had just ¥80,000 on it. Of course I said YES! Would never happen in the States. I'm trying to find a Pentax outlet here somewhere but haven't had any luck. If you'd like me to look for you again just let me know. We go there often.

These usually aren't seen too often here so I figured I'd post this. I know I see some Moon pics from time to time by fs999 so hopefully you'll enjoy this. Also, I'm sorry to say this was taken not with a K5 but with my newly purchased K5ii-S. I got it for a steal here in Japan (brand new $800) so I couldn't pass it up. Plus it does really well for me with the astrophotography. I also know this isn't perfect work. I just like to share it. Thanks, and great pictures everyone. I love this thread.

When I purchased it from OPT (optcorp.com Great people there), they told me it would probably distort some at the corners on a DSLR. I didn't care though; I was so excited to get a nice quality scope. I'm hoping to have some more clear weather here and even more pictures! Do you ever use any type of filters with yours? I bought both an O-iii and a UHC in 2" and tried them out and didn't really notice any improvements. I was also a bit impatient and just wanted to see some results. Maybe I was rushing.

Thank you Vancmann! Yeah, I noticed that too. Both of these have been slightly cropped as well. I know it's not a tracking issue cos I have nice points in the middle. I've been told before that I will probably need a field flattener so I'm pretty sure that's the issue. I purchased a .8x focal reducer thinking it would do the job but I think it undid what the APO part was meant to do. I kept getting little halos so I took it off. Next purchase, field flattener. :D

Finally made some new photos!!! These were both taken on somewhat windy nights so I can't wait until I have steady air and seeing to try again. This is my first attempt at each one. Oh yeah, and I also picked up a brand new K-5IIs here in Japan on sale for $800! So far it's great!

Pentax K-5IIs, Orion ED80CFT, tracked with AstroTrac, (8) 60 second and (2) 120 second subs @800ISO and one 3minute exposure at 1600ISO (no darks, flats, bias), stacked with DSS, processed with CS5.

K-5IIs, EDOrion80CF, five 1min subs 800ISO (no darks, flats, bias), stacked with DSS, processed with CS5, tracked with AstroTrac.
