Sorry I missed you!

It all went quickly except the camera and macro. I have two people interested in each but so far, no one has committed. Given the price of SDHC cards, I am surprised they're still for sale!

Best regards,
Phil

Well, that's it everyone, it's all SOLD. My thanks to everyone who bought items or emailed me with interest. Everyone was great to deal with and who knows, I may rejoin the Pentax family again. My wish continues to be that their products grow and prosper.

Best regards,
PW

I’m bailing. I love Pentax and the system is great as far as it goes but I’ve recently gone to a dual platform approach due to the lack of super-telephoto lenses for Pentax.

I went with the Nikon D300 and the Sigma 300-800 plus the Nikkor 16-85, 70-200 f/2.8, 200-400 f/4 and the 24mm PC-E. With my K20D and glass, I’ve had the best of both worlds for the last two months but now that Nikon is launching a mid-priced FX with the D700, the handwriting is on the wall. I really want FX/DX flexibility and two cameras that will take all my glass so…I’m offering up my entire Pentax system, in pieces or in total, to the group here first before taking it out to eBay buyers and camera retailers.

All equipment is in MINT condition and comes with original boxes, manuals, lens hoods and caps, cases (if originally supplied) and I am pricing it all to move, as I’m looking to buy the D700 and a couple of FX compatible wide angle/macro lenses ASAP.

The glass has no scratches of any kind and everything is 4-10 months old. I have no problem taking something back if you find a defect but I am certain you won’t as again, it’s all sparsely used and in excellent+ condition.

I’ve really enjoyed these forums since joining the Pentax family last November and have learned a lot from many of you. Therefore, I am leaving this post in the forum exclusively, for 10 DAYS. After that, I’ll be exploring eBay and other avenues to sell whatever is remaining. I truly hope that Pentax will, over time, increase their excellent line of glass and maybe introduce an FX camera down the road. However, my photography needs are moving too fast to wait and so, as I stated above…I’m bailing.

Items For Sale:

K20D + RRS L Bracket + Pentax Extra Battery (and charger). SOLD

Hakuba SDHC card cases + two (2) card readers. Each case has eight (8) 4 GB SanDisk SDHC cards in it. - SOLD

Pentax 12-24mm + Hoya UV and Hoya Pro Circular Polarizer - $625 SOLD

Pentax 10-17mm Fisheye - $325 SOLD

Pentax 18-250 + Hoya Pro UV and Hoya Pro Circular Polarizer - $450 SOLD

Pentax FA 31mm Ltd. + B+W UV Filter - $725 SOLD

Pentax 100mm Macro + B+W UV Filter SOLD

Sigma 50-500mm + Heliopan Slim Circular Polarizer - $895 SOLD

I have a verified PayPal account or will accept a money order or personal check. If paying with the latter, it must clear before I ship it to you. I will ship everything USPS insured with tracking and depending on the item(s) provide you with an estimate on shipping costs. I don’t want to profit on shipping, just cover my costs and postage.

Please send me a PM if you have any questions and if you would like to discuss any of the items over the telephone, leave me your number and a good time to contact you, as I would be happy to call. PLEASE, serious inquiries only. I’m the General Manager of a busy restaurant in Naples Florida and as such am…well…busy! :)

Thank you for your time and interest, and best wishes to everyone on their photographic journeys!

Hot: The Online Photographer puts K20D in top 10, better image quality than D300"

I am actually a dual platform guy (not a pro) with a K20D (upgraded from the K10D in February) and a D300 (purchased in April). In my experience, their BOTH tremendous cameras, each with advantages over the other.

I bought into the Nikon system primarily because I wanted long telephoto glass for birds and wildlife. The first lens I bought for it was the Sigma 300-800, and now have the new VR2 16-85, the VR f/2.8 70-200, the VR f/4 200-400 and the new 24mm PC-E (tilt/shift).

My K20D has the 18-250 for a walk around, the 10-17 fisheye and 12-24 for wide angle, the 100mm macro, the f/1.8 31mm ltd. prime and the Sigma 50-500 (Bigma).

It always amazes me how worked up some people get about their systems. It's like if you question the D300, you're attacking them personally. I guess it's common to tie ones identity into what one has or does but do "things" really define who we are? I choose to think not but don't want to digress into a discussion on metaphysics or epistemology. How about everyone agreeing that just because I like vanilla doesn't mean I have to hate chocolate!

I just look at them as tools and go from there. From my experience with both (the main reason I'm replying to this thread) is that I do feel the K20D image quality is every bit as good if not better than that of the D300.

It seems that there isn't a universally "most important aspect" to any tool. Rather, it's what's most important to the person using it. For me, IQ is right at the top, followed by selection of glass.

IQ being more or less equal, I've found I like K20D better for the weather seals, smaller body (fits my hands a bit better), and I really like IS in the body!

The D300 has much faster AF and the 6-8 FPS comes in handy too. While I love my Pentax glass, I feel Nikon has a much bigger selection, especially in the long end. It ain't cheap but until Sigma comes out with the 300-800 in a Pentax mount or revisits the 250-600 digital style, I'll take the long Nikon lenses anyday.

I've really learned a lot from many of you over the last 10 months reading this forum and want to thank everyone for that. I generally don't post too often as I am not that experienced and don't feel I have that much info to offer. More often than not, I'm just asking questions.

Given that I'm shooting with both cameras, I thought I'd offer what little I could.

I really like the Online Photographer (that and the Luminous Landscape are my two favorite photo based sites) and am glad to see both the D300 and the K20D getting their just praise.

I love Pentax and hope it gets more market share as competition is a great thing for all of us consumers! They've certainly got the D-SLRs now, and if their quantity of glass can catch up to their quality AND they have the corporate marketing dollars and energy, the "Big 2" will have to make some room at the top!

My best to everyone,
Phil

Tamron/Sigma walk-around lens queries

I don't know about the Tamron 24-135...are you looking for a macro specifically?

I have the Pentax (Tamron makes one too) 18-250mm for my "walkaround" lens and have been very happy with it. It would give you a lot more range.

Good luck,
PW

Yes, I saw that but again, I haven't found anyone else that even shows it as a special order so...it appears it's Henry's or no lens unless someone has another idea.

I'm not too worried about liking it though as the reveiws are very good and I love their 50-500mm. Still, it's a heck of a lot of money!

I am looking at buying this lens and am wondering if anyone in the forum has it and, if so, how they like it. I'll be using it with my K10D and K20D when it arrives.

Additionally, the only place I have found it listed for sale in Henry's for approx $6,500 US. I'd prefer to buy from a US store but haven't found one. Anyone know how Henry's is to buy from?

I originally wanted a Sigma 300-800mm but they don't seem to make it in a Pentax mount.

Thanks!

I finally just checked on the Sigma site and it doesn't look like they make the thing in a Pentax mount. I guess that explains why I couldn't fine one!

If anyone has a recommendation on 600mm or up lens that is made and available for under 10k for a K20D, please let me know.

Thanks!

Does anyone know who sells the Sigma 300-800mm in a Pentax mount? I see them for the other cameras but not for my K10D (soon to be K20D!).

I can't believe I am actually thinking for buying one but just maybe. If I do, I guess I'll have to buy a Gimbal Mount too. Yikes, what am I thinking?

Thanks,
Phil

Thanks! I support the lens with my left hand while shooting without a tripod but will start using the tripod collar. It seemed solid enough but it makes sense that, over time, it's not doing the camera mount any good.

All the best,
Phil

I too, recently bought a Bigma and have really enjoyed it. While at the zoo today, another photographer suggested I use a support for it. Does anyone think it might damage the camera without one or can the camera hold 4lbs ok?

I shoot with it handheld and with a tripod (RRS BH40 Ballhead).

Thanks!

Question on long zoom for K10D

Thanks Roentarre. I've been doing a lot of research on this and other sites and think I'm going for the Bigma. It sounds like what you said about the 50-100mm range is true, based on many other posts. However, I have a Pentax 18-250mm, so I'm really looking at the Bigma (or something) for 200mm and up. I like the idea of the smaller & less expensive 135-400mm but have a nagging concern about wanting the extra reach + the lens has some good reviews but some (a few too many for me) not so good ones too.

The Bigma may be a little soft after 430mm but it appears it's the best option I can find, I have heard the bokeh is great on it, which is always an added plus.

I'm going to pull the trigger on the Bigma this week, unless I find something else that really rocks.

Thanks for your help!

K20d rumours - Infrared

After looking at all the IR options, I went ahead and bought the new Canon G9 and had Life Pixel convert it with a 665 nanometer enhanced color IR filter. It works GREAT, with instant pics vs. long exposure times of the external filters and thus, usually needing a tripod.

Using the live view (viewfinder isn't that great) takes a bit of getting used to however (the K10D is my regular camera). I am new to IR photography and feel if someone really wants to get into it without the limitations of an external filter, then converting one is the way to go.

Their site has a list of cameras they work on, prices, example pics and free tutorials. I needed the camera very quickly and they turned it around in one day (albeit for an extra fee) and had it back to me in less than one week with shipping both ways.

I highly recommend them (found out about them from Dave Busch's "Digital Infrared Pro Secrets" book.

Good luck!

Question on long zoom for K10D

I've looked at the Sigma 135-400 & 170-500 and some reviews are great and some aren't. Anyone out there with recent experience with either of these?

Are there any lens at 400 or 500mm that aren't zooms (Prime quality) that would fit my
K10D? If I bought an adaptor, would that increase my options? I'd really like a killer 400 or 500mm, somehow, someway!

Thanks!

Are there any zooms in the 400-500mm range that will work well with a K10D? I'd prefer one that fits without an adaptor and assume I'd have to use a long zoom like that with a tripod and anti-shake off.

Any advice on brands and dealers is appreciated!

Thanks,
Phil

Debating what LBA has in store for me...

I was in the same boat (no pun intended) and bought the Pentax 18-250 to replace my 18-55 and my 50-200. So far, it's been great.

I also really enjoy my 12-24 for wide angle but it sounds like you already have that covered.

My newest (and last for a while) are the 100mm Macro and the fantastic 31mm ltd. Prime...an amazing lens. That gives me a 4 lens rotation and really, all I'll need. You might really want to look at a prime, as long as the cost isn't prohibitive.

I hope this helps!

Lens recommendations for K10D

A quick note of thanks to everyone who answered my post and to the rest of you whose posts have really helped me determine my lens choices.

As I'm mostly doing nature/landscape/wildlife, and want maximum flexability with the fewest lenses in the bag. I shelved my 18-55mm kit and 50-200mm and now have the following 4 lens rotation:

ZOOMS:

12-24mm wide angle
18-250mm
100mm macro

PRIMES:

31mm ltd.

Due to my mom's health, I've had to fly across country and haven't been able to give any of them a real workout yet but the 18-250mm seems at least as good as the 50-200mm at the lowest and highest zoom and certainly sharp enough for what I'm doing. Macro is kind of wild and without any experience, it'll take some practice to figure out how I want to shoot the subjects. The 31mm ltd...WOW. Again, I haven't an opportunity to really get after it but the few test shots I've taken have been VERY impressive.

NOW, I'm looking for a 12-step program to stop from buying anymore primes...I can hear the 77mm ltd calling!

Thanks again everyone,
Phil

Lens recommendations for K10D

Hello everyone! I am new to the forum and also new to photography. I got the K10D 3 months ago for my birthday and it's been a fantastic journey to far.

My question is on a great third lens. I bought my K10D with the 18-55mm and a 50-200mm. Subsequently, I bought the 12-24mm (my primary interest is in nature/landscape) and my 18-250mm is due from Amazon on Monday (can't wait!).

It would appear the 18-250mm will render the kit lens and 50-200 unnecessary, so that leaves me with the 12-24mm wide angle as my second lens.

Is there a third lens that someone feels is a "must have?" Price isn't really an object, although I'd prefer not to spend over $1,000 unless I have to. Additionally, I'd like a lens that fits the camera without an adaptor but again, if I had to, I probably would go this route.

The*16-45mm looks like a great lens but I'm not sure if I really need it. I would certainly appreciate any/all advice I can get, and thank you in advance for your assistance.

Best regards,
Phil
