Lens, or camera?

Pixel shift is very useful, giving better colours and improved resolution. Very good for still subjects, but it must be on a tripod. I use it for copying artwork.

Focus stacking is different, again ideally needing a tripod. It’s important to have your lenses focus-fine-tuned so that if you’re shifting focus by tiny amounts, then you’re actually getting what you think you’re getting.

I tend to shoot in TAv mode most of the time, so I get to choose shutter speed and aperture. What othar said is a good steer, but for landscape shots where I don’t have a tripod with me, I’m even more conservative. For example, using the 20-40 Limited at 30mm on APS-c, I’ll go for at least 1/125 second. With a tele on at say 200mm, I’m over 1/1000. High pixel-count cameras are unforgiving, of whatever format.

Just changing the lens won’t do it for you, I think. Work with the lenses you have and look for improved technique. After that, once you’ve confirmed that you’re not back- or front-focussing (fine-tuning if necessary) then you should be in better shape.

One thing I learned in going from a lower megapixie sensor to a higher one (in APS-c but the logic still holds) is that the higher the resolution, the easier it is to get blurry pictures. I addressed it by stepping upwards in shutter speed except when I was looking for motion blur effects.

I agree with Sandy. I’ve taken the 20-40 to many places over the past 9 years and it’s been a great travel lens, generating some stunning photos. My travel kit is typically just the 20-40 and 55-300PLM with the K-3II, and if I need wider, I take two vertical (portrait) photos at 20mm and stitch them.

I use DCU5 for producing TIFFs of pixel-shift photos, but that’s about it. I’ve used Adobe Camera Raw (rather than Lightroom) plus Photoshop for years, and am comfortable with the workflow and results.

Getting it right in camera depends on your view of what ‘right’ is. Even with the dynamic range of our modern Pentaxes, it is still very easy to blow highlights at anywhere near normal metered exposure. The opposite to the right-first-time approach is, given that we have ISO-invariant sensors, to hugely under expose and fix in post to maximise dynamic range and not lose any highlight data. There are many fans of that technique here. If what a photographer does satisfies their own requirement, then surely that’s up to them. I routinely check the histogram in camera to make sure I haven’t blown anything (or anything important) and then process accordingly. 😉

I have ‘transitions’, and plastic lenses - I have to, for thin-ness as my prescription is complex. If they were glass, they’d be like Coke-bottle bottoms and really heavy!

And my hi-fi interconnects are not expensive! ;)

After watching Maestro, it has to be Mahler's second symphony, with Leonard Bernstein and the London Symphony Orchestra at Ely Cathedral in Cambridgeshire, in 1973.

Merry Christmas Bert. The M42 screw lenses will need to be operated with the switch on the lens in the Manual position, and using stop-down metering on the MX, as there’s no mechanism to stop the lens down automatically.

I always used to use the SMC Pentax-A 70-210/f4 on my MX and it performed very well. I still have both, although the MX could use a CLA now.

Another vote here for Also sprach Zarathustra. I played crash cymbals in it for our local orchestra, back in my playing days.

Mike; yes, I think I am, a little! It was a noticeable step up from the original kit lens and lives on my *ist DS. That front element makes such a statement… 😮😄

Yes, Mike, this is the lens that can apparently suffer with the Dreaded Droop, although my copy doesn’t really have a problem with it. It has such a cute front end with its large front element, and oh, that petal hood!

I started taking atorvastatin about six months ago after my doc said that although my total cholesterol was below the alert level, the ratio of ’good’ vs ‘bad’ cholesterol was skewed, so he recommended that I start taking the lowest dosage. He told me that if I took them later in the day, any muscular side effects might tend to be while I was asleep. I haven’t noticed any side effects at all.
