I had the 'machine gun' problem after 2360 exposures, serial # 4850xxx, firmware 1.10, aperture priority, DA* 16-50/2.8 lens, recently charged original Pentax battery, SanDisk Ultra 32 GB in both slots, AF mode (but I have the AF on the AF button only, not on the trigger and used manual focus (have to with my 16-50)). Temperature was about 17°C.
First occurrence ever, no problems so far since I bought the camera in January 2014.

Ken, what lens did you use for the Marina Bay Sands shot? There is some ugly CA on the left side. The right side looks fab, though.
Finally got the second century with this one:

I got two out of five rejected, which I think is a good sign (although I like both shots). Had some easy breeze throughs recently...

I tend to disagree, the photographers intention does not need to be known. If the intention doesn't reveal itself on evaluation then the photographer just got it wrong, the intention didn't work out (at least for the judges). I find that fair enough.
Yes, a wild animal is much harder to shoot and as such I appreciate a fuzzy shot of a grizzly in the distance. For a gallery like the PEG, however, I think the close up shot taken in the zoo under interesting lighting conditions is better placed in it.
The images should speak for themselves, no explanation needed. This bears the risk of misinterpretation but we have to live with that.
I also don't think there _has_ to be an arbitration system. It's like any brick-and-mortar gallery, the owner has the final say of what to take and what not.
Look through these 38 pages of rejects and discussion and you see that the system sometimes fails (and you see that the system seems to work well on other occasions). Look through the PEG and you might spot the odd acceptance that seems out of place (to your subjective taste that most probably differs from the judges subjective taste). But all in all it is a collection of very pleasing images.
Your images get rejected time and time again (like mine) - tough luck. Either try again and again until you hit the sweet spot or give up and spend the time with other things. None of my images in the PEG? Ok. It's a great collection even without my images (as hard as it seems to imagine), so flick through it and enjoy.
All this said I would welcome a formalized appraisal with feedback that you can work on. That would help to improve ones photography. But if it's not going to happen I won't loose any sleep over it.

Well, how many soft focus images are in the PEG? So that doesn't seem to figure in at all. ;) More seriously:
Seems I have missed an interesting discussion here. I like the idea of a formalized set of criteria as suggested by Tess. The deliberately defocussed moody piece would still have the focus 'right' (we have to assume that the judges are able to recognize that).
But all that feedback on submissions could be solved by the users. How's about a separate thread 'Brutally honest critique of PEG rejections'? If you are not up for brutal honesty then don't submit there and if you do all the other members should try their hardest to find fault with the image and write it down. It might have been the original intention of this thread.
I'm a member of a small group of people that are doing exactly that (and some of you know well what I'm referring to). I submit what at the time I think is a wonderful image and it gets torn to shreds (a little exaggeration here) in many cases. If I look back at the criticism after some weeks or months I easily can see the points that have been made (in most cases :) ). That way I can improve this picture (in PP) or the next one keeping the mute points in mind when shooting similar things) and thus also improve my level of photography.
It only works well when all parties have a mutual respect for their photography and take the criticism as criticism of that piece of work rather than criticism on them as a person.
The second precondition (and a hard one to meet) is that there are sufficient numbers of people taking the time to look at an image in depth and voice their opinion on what is wrong with it. So you have to spend some time looking on other peoples images and think and write about it. Time that could be spent taking photos...
I'm one of the regular whiners here about rejections but I do appreciate that the judges have the final say about what images are accepted. It would be nice if the feedback could be a bit more coherent (and a formal appraisal would help with that) but if the judges are not able to do that we can do it ourselves.
Having said that, if the judges are not able to do it then it probably doesn't make sense to interpret anything into their decisions or comments, it would just show that they don't have enough time for a proper appraisal (and I got very swift rejections in some cases). I would understand that but it would mean that the PEG is not what it says on the label...

Benjamin, why did you submit three of the plant shots? Yes, they are nice but sooo similar. I hate it when people submit the same thing from only slightly different angles. So when I see these in voting the first one gets a thumbs up (they really are nice) but if I then see the same thing in slight variations it's thumb down even if the second or third is the better shot. BTW: On the third plant shot I see a real cracker subject for a macro shot even closer in. Look at the three drops on the outside of that cut off leaf, they show a complete flower in them. Would love to see a close up of that leaf. (Would even make me 'thumb up' that same plant again :); after all they wouldn't be taken in the same session ).

Chris, I usually only submit the ones that I wouldn't be surprised to go through. In the old days the percentage of declines was much higher than the successes. Many shots that I still hold dear were declined. That's fine. And today's rejections hopefully mean that the admission will get a bit more tricky. (Not as tricky as the Elusive Gallery here, though, I hope :))

Just had two rejected (shock). While I am a bit grumpy over one of the rejects I welcome it at the same time. I think it is a good sign as I haven't had any rejects since the revamp.

BigDave, this is done fairly straight forward. Camera on tripod with DA 10-17 fisheye, 4 seconds exposure gave the best patterns on the wheel. That guy stood there without moving during exposure.

I wouldn't question the credentials of the judges, judging is a difficult business and judging images can never be done purely objective.
When I look through the selection in PEG I see some (most) shots where it is easy to see why they are selected. Some of the insect shots are not at the same level (in my book). Insects and birds seem to get in with more ease than other subjects. Also I can see some badly PP'ed shots that made it in.
So from the images in the PEG it is not possible to deduce the set of criteria that the judging is founded on (apart from the criterion "when the image is by Prieni it doesn't go in", of course :lol:). And the same with the images shown in this thread. Look at Tamia's "Skeletal" on the first page of this thread. Breathtakingly good. Tanner Yates shots of the spider and praying mantis (page 3) are far better than some of the insect shots that made it (so I have to take back my remark above; insects don't get in easier).
At least the recent rejections had some comments as you can see above. Even if I don't agree with them they do provide some sort of explanation.
BTW: The last rejected shot (crushing waves) has been sold about 20 times in sizes up to two metres. It also has been bought by a photographer for two composites in a calendar. So some viewers seem to make a connection with it...

Nice one Tamia, I really like it!
Had two further tries:
Comment: "Nice colors and feel to the water. Interesting lighting. Second light creates an unbalanced juxtaposition of the elements.
Nicely exposed and processed, though the subject is quite central, which loses its compositional impact and it is placed on a bland sky backdrop."
And this one, that made me quite a bit of money so far:
Comment:"Very well done! If anything, it would be nice to see more of the waves.
Great color and action. Nice use of form. Hope the camera stayed dry!
Well processed and good textures, however the subject needs more interest and the lack of a clear point of interest does make it difficult for the viewer to make a connection with the image."
EDIT: Had the wrong image for the first entry; the other one had been rejected earlier...

BigDave, I know that these points are hard to make out. It wasn't meant as a serious remark. I'm challenging the conventional wisdom that there has to be a point of interest; in this case I think you would end up with a lesser picture. For me it is one of the appeals out at sea that your eyes are constantly searching the horizon and don't find anything to latch on apart from waves and clouds.

Comment: "Nice textures and depiction of dynamism. As an abstract, it doesn't quite impress, and for a landscape it lacks a point of interest."
Clearly not a seagoing fellow :)
There even are two points of interest on the horizon on the right, one buoy and one distant ship. :lol:

Do you have the shot wide enough to get the tiles vertical? I do understand why you didn't get a lower viewpoint (might have earned you even more quirky looks).
