4.1 is PC? or Mac? I thought 3.6 was latest for mac. Thanks. Are your cards 95 megs per second models?

derAngler,

I had same corruption problem today on Sandisk 16gig 95 mbs SD card. Same problem in both 16 and 64. Must be the 95 m/b/s issue in that type of card.

I assume, thus the sub $10k price tag. You've got to sacrifice something.

Honestly the only issue is shooting lifestyle; shooting fast. I'm sure landscape photographers do not experience an issue with the slow engine.

Thank you.

The weird thing: Sometimes the current firmware renders the frame fine, but most of the time, I was seeing failure. Very hit and miss. I tested a lot -- i'd reformat and shoot eight frames and import. Most of the time, it would import the first two frames, and the fail on the rest of the card. Whatever it is, it's way over my head; whatever is happening.

All I know, I cannot deal with corrupted RAWs.

Yes, I am seeing the same problem behavior on the two new cards -- the 16 gig size and the 64 gig size. Both are the newer 95 meg per second. They just don't seem to talk well to the 645D. Maybe a firmware update is needed, but my firmware is the newest.

Hi Ryan,

I religiously ALWAYS format each and every card inside the camera, using the FORMAT menu command.

Have been testing more today, and it appears related to the newer 95 mb/s Sandisk cards. The 64gig 95mbs card is now completely locked up -- the 645D will not format the card. I get an LCD message : CARD ERROR.

I also have been testing the older 45 mbs cards from Sandisk Extreme pro and they seem to shoot and import just fine into Lightroom. No failure of any kind.

Narrowing down the issue....

Thanks.

Eddie,

I spoke too soon. I shot again a test with PEF, and I got this same problem dialogue box with PEF, that I got two days ago with DNG.

See attached.

Eddie,

Just tested PEF into Lightroom 3.6 Mac, and yes it imports just fine. Thank you for that option. Still testing camera. (Still nervous).

Why PEF? If you shoot PEF, what application do you process your RAWs? Why not DNG?

Thank you. Complicating this problem is that I'm using this 645D to shoot people, and so I've set it up to shoot ONLY to one slot, so that it shoots faster, writing only to one card.

I will test this today, thoroughly. If it continues to fail, I'll simply sell the camera. Cannot risk having this happen. Will go back to Nikon.

Has anyone seen this behavior? I got it the first time yesterday, on a job with the 645D:

I got back to the hotel, and started downloading the RAW files, and when importing the DNGs into Lightroom, it would download the first two files, and then sorta of freeze up, and then Lightroom would give a dialogue box with a list of all the rest of the file names that were still on the card, and the message indicated that they were "unrecognizable".

The files were still on the card, but Lightroom would not import them. It scared me to death. I'm using this combo on another job very soon.

Same behavior happened with TWO different SD cards. After the failure, I inserted a different card, and tested it in the hotel room; shot new photos and it downloaded two files then froze up and gave same dialogue box.

Notes:

* 645d has latest firmware.
* Card was a 95mps Sandisk SD card. Newest style card.
* Macbook Pro 13" computer running latest OS.
* Lightroom 3.6 Mac.

Any thoughts before I start testing again today. I turned the camera to JPG ONLY to finish the job and it shot and downloaded JPG File Format just fine. But with RAW ONLY, it locked up.

The only "new" variables, from what I've been shooting for months are: The new 95 m/s Sandisk Cards, and also I was using my little 13" to import, rather than my 27 iMac.

645D write speed

I am attempting to set this 645D up for a Lifestyle shoot. I need it to run as fast as possible. I am curious if anyone can provide info to get the very fastest write times, to the SD cards, and also to get the camera to report back, as quickly as possible, with the LCD Preview. While I love the camera, I too have found the Processing Engine to be very slow; makes it hard to shoot people, quickly, with multiple frames. It seems vastly underpowered to me.

* I am running latest firmware, and I am running the Sandisk Extreme Pro 95 m/s SD cards.

* I am running only Slot 1. Slot 2 is turned off in the camera.

* Shooting RAW/DNG to card.

* Do you think the JPG settings, for size and compression, have anything to do with the actual creation of the JPG Preview that you see on the LCD? In other words, if you were shooting RAW to the card, but you wanted a fast Preview, would it help to set the JPG settings to the smallest JPG and the most compression? I would be willing to see a lesser quality LCD image, for review, if it came up FASTER.

* Any other suggestions that users have found?

Thank you very much.

645D: Using Pentax flashes, off camera on stand, with PW?

Mr Whale,

Sorry, I wasn't clear. It's about, "Can you specify, in the menu, which slot it writes to?" Sometimes, the camera seems to be writing to 2; sometimes it writes to 1. With my D3x, it seems to default to Slot 1, and then you can either "duplicate 1, to 2", or use 2 as an overrun slot, to double the capacity.

I also wonder if there's a shortcut/easier/faster way to format cards, rather than that buried command in the Menus. Can you push a combo of buttons to reformat a card?

Thank you.

Not related question, but for 645D: Is there a Menu Item to specify which SD slot you want to shoot to? There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it, so much that, I make sure and only have a card in Slot 1. I now leave slot 2 empty.

Thank you for the response. I already own six or eight of the pocket wizards, for use with ProFoto packs. Will the PW talk directly to the 540? I guess you'd have to wire up a receiver PW on the 540, right? With a short cord? I'd just want to set the 540 on Manual, and shoot it thru an umbrella or softbox, very close to the camera. But have the 540 mounted in some kind of bracket/holder that would slide down onto a 3/8" Matthews CStand.

I'm in the first month of using the 645D. Curious to know the best setup for using a Pentax flash, similar to the 540FGZ, on a stand, either with a Pocket Wizard, or some other wireless setup? Or, if not, if it's possible to run a manual sync cord to that flash. And how people are actually mounting that 540 flash onto a C-Stand, for use with some kind of softbox or other modifier.

Any real-world suggestions very much appreciated. Thank you.
