yeah im probably causing myself undue hardship but im just traveling around with the gf.
i remember when i got the 35/2.4 and compared it to my 18-55 kit lens (at 35mm) and thought.. there is no IQ improvement. but the fast AF, stop improvement, and size are definitely nice features.
im excited to try out the da 15 for landscapes.

Heh. I'm just traveling with my gf. I ended up buying the DA 15. So now I have a DA 15, 35, 50-135 setup. I imagine 35 is on it most of the time and when I do landscapes, etc then I switch to DA 15. But the 50-135 is so good. But probably wouldnt take it out on day trips.
i was really debating having a 12-24, 35, 50-135 setup. but i figured id be happy with just getting a DA15 and save some money.
almost went with DA21 but apparently the DA15 controls your mind... some kind of pixie dust.
Thanks for the comments all. I settled on getting a DA15 and figured I'd bring along the 35 as the main lens... but the 50-135 is kinda iffy for me. i don't do much people shooting and in december i wont be doing zoo trips. my camera bag can hold the 2 primes and 50-135 though. but my last trips i never brought the camera bag with me. but the pictures ive taken so far with the 50-135 are really amazing quality.
I actually got the 50-135 for backyard wildlife.. i got critters running around that are too close for my da* 300.

OK I'm leaning towards this setup now: 15 / 35 / 50-135...
Thanks for the post. I think I would just be itching for wider if i got 21. So when I get to see nice landscapes I'll just bust out the 15 mm. Never will lug around a tripod on a vacation trip though. I got steady hands thankfully :D
Nice photos. :) 31/1.8 is quite a fantastic lens.

i use lightroom but never realized i should get rid of perspective. i always used the profile fix and CA fixes. good looking out.
maybe i will visit coburg and pass through bamberg again. bamberg was one of my favorite places of all. just had that nice charm about it.. i went on a sunday though so i couldnt really experience too much. ill have to try the smoked beer next time :)
i think im itching for the DA 21 LTD over the 15.
yeah im thinking DA 21 over 15 now. After seeing a lot of my shots, I feel i would benefit having a wide lens. do you really need 35 when you got a 21 though? ie 21 and 50-135? i guess 35 is still useful if you get a 15. i just wonder about when i'd actually bother to stop and change out the lens.

yeah museums, zoos, buildings, scenery, going on top of a tower, etc. i like doing all that too. wide angle would suck at a zoo i think. but i really like taking pictures of church buildings on the outside and inside which are pretty tall and big.
would the DA 15mm fit as a scenery lens although im guessing there's a lot of distortion involved being so wide?
or 21mm LTD?
the super takumar 24 pictures that i see on the reviews section seems a bit soft to me.
here's one of my albums from last year.. but i used the 18-55mm lens.. i feel like i want a bit more IQ this time around.

Hey guys.
I'm going to be traveling to Germany for christmas time. I was wondering what you guys think would make for some great photos.
I have a K-30 camera and my current arsenal of lenses include:
18-55mm (kit lens)
DA 35mm f2.4 AL
DA* 300mm f4
DA* 50-135mm f2.8
Should I just bring the 35mm and 50-135mm? Or should I be buying a wider lens (18? 21?) for street/landscape photography? I don't mind weight really but changing lenses would be a downer since I just imagine taking the camera around my neck and not lugging around a bunch of lenses.

I used Flickr at start.. but the free version is really pointless. It's great for community sharing though if you pay for the pro version.
However I quoted dcBear because he mentioned lightroom integration. I use lightroom in my workflow and it uploads directly to picasa/google+ like anywhere else. I use the jfriedl plugin for that.
I currently upload through picasa with my g+ linked.. and get unlimited uploads since i dont need to upload pics with a dimension more than 2048. Only thing I miss out on is the large community that would comment on photos.

That.. is.. amazing.
Do you use AF-C when shooting (pardon the pun) the eagles? Edit: I'm guessing you shoot in Tv mode with 1/1250 or faster?
I suck at BIF photography currently =P
Do you use a monopod for easy tracking or a tripod?
Sorry for all the questions. I just want to take photos like those :P

*cough* ... wall has a few spots. dont judge me :P
I can notice it's slightly better in the prime lens.
First picture (29) is the kit lens
Second picture (28) is the prime lens.
Edit: Since max image on site is 1200x800.. I did a 1200x800 crop rectangle... is that pretty much 100% crop?
Trying to figure out how to do it easily in lightroom but apparently there is no easy way.

Is it just me or do I just not notice any improvement at all? Even pixel peeping to the best of my ability leaves me inconclusive.
I believe it is focused on her right hand. On tripod with both using f4.5, iso 100 and 4 second exposure.
I actually think I got worse results using the prime with the spice rack layout.
(1) IMGP0026 = Kit lens
(2) IMGP0027 = Prime lens
(3) IMGP0017 = Kit lens
(4) IMGP0019 = Prime lens
I still like having the extra f-stops, but I thought the IQ would jump up at least a little bit.
*The uploaded photos are quite a bit lower in quality than the ones in my lightroom :x

Well FWIW, I just bought a DA 35mm f2.4 for $150 on this site.
I do have the 18-55mm kit lens, but I wanted to boost the IQ ;) I don't think there's anything out there that beats it (at least for primes) in bang for buck.

Catching squirrels running around at F8 doesn't seem that great :\ That usually put me into the ISO 1600 category for any decent shutter speed unless it was super bright outside.
I must admit the camera loved to front focus. I would face it at the groundhog, for example, and the focus square would like to pick the grass in front.
I'll make sure to keep an eye on that when i get my K-30 :)
Great post calculator. I must admit I was biased towards pentax combo over nikon combo (hence why im posting the question here i guess :D) but when you said you think that combo is a little bit better than the d7000 combo... i just went ahead and bought the k30. i dont necessarily need to spend another 150 for the k-5 in my application i think.

Wow thanks for the tips. I'm still a beginner (hence posting here) so when it comes to lighting, I try for the best but don't know much about it =P
To be honest, if I got the DA* 300mm f4, then I would be using tripod I'm sure. I seemed to have done alright handholding the 55-300mm lens. The 55-300mm lens got stolen though so I'd have to purchase it again.
Here's an example of a sunny, fall day walking through a nature trail where I actually used a tripod:

It seems alright but I don't seem to get that extra clarity I'm seeing in the Da* 300mm photos.
Yeah I know the glazing of the window is detrimental to my photos. Sometimes I try to sneak outside but then they run especially the groundhogs.

I guess it's better to master technique before going for the equipment... but isn't there something to growing with the equipment and not being limited?

Hello all. I've been using a K-R for the past years until it got stolen from my house. I still got the kit 18-55mm lens, tripod, batteries, etc.
Now I'm in the market for a replacement. I didn't think I'd stick with pentax since I always had some envy with canikon's lens selections.
However, after thinking about d5100, I started then looking at D7000 which invariably led me to the K-30/K-5. The K-30 (white body) is only $600 which seems pretty nice to me while old K-5 is what, $750? Anyways, I'm asking if I am doing myself any favors by going for the K-30 to save cost. I know there is focus peaking.
As for lens, I'm thinking about the DA* 300mm. I noticed when I took pictures of animals in my backyard that 90% of the time I was shooting at 200+mm range and usually at 300mm. Pictures turned out okay, but nothing drool worthy came out of the 55-300mm either.

Please note that these pictures are hand held and some of them are through a dual pane window. But you can see that my last photo is pretty rough. I tend to like hand holding as setting up a tripod is not always ideal in my situation.
Am I best served with bang for buck by going with k-30 and DA* 300mm f4... or should I be getting a bigma? i'm not really all too familiar with canon and nikon's offerings. nikon d7000 + nikkor 300mm f4 is a bit pricier. T3i and its 300mm lens is around same price point.
My other passion is food photography but it's usually in the kitchen with bad lighting.
Just trying to figure out how to get the best photos I can but for less than $2k =P I'd appreciate some feedback :)

Broah. Just use the 2 sec drive mode (single, exposure bracketing, etc). I guess the downside is you might miss the shot in that 2 s period especially with lightning bolts going on.

That's a pretty good 12800 ISO picture. Mine turn out a bit grainier so I personally will never let the ISO value go above 6400 unless it's pitch black outside and i cant do long shutter times.
