I have to come back to the
SMC Pentax-A 35-105mm F3.5 as the most used, even on my K3 it's a gem

Here is a link to some photos I've taken recently with this lens. I'll be adding more to my Flickr account in the coming weeks. I'm finally starting to like this lens. I'm not a pro or anything but I think this is a great walk around lens for street photography. Pentax A-28mm F2.8 by bass3587, on Flickr

I look at them for different purposes. The IQ on both are excellent as I've shot portraits with both but seem to pull out the 18-135 more due to it's quietness and focal range, Most of my shots are within the 25-75mm range. While that may show some overlap I'll stick with the 18-135 for two more reasons...size and zoom ring. The DAL 55-300 is not smooth trying to zoom in and out (at least mine isn't) it's haltingly rough and it's much larger length-wise than the 18-135 but similar in weight on my scales 17.5 oz DAL and 15.9 oz for the 18-135.If you get a smooth one the 55-300 will make a nice addition to your collection but I'm almost positive the newer version (PLM) will run circles around the DAL 55-300. Hope that helps.

This will be the lens I keep out of my current APSC lens if I sell the other zooms. It's weather sealed and takes awesome shots.

If low light performance is a big issue then look for examples on here or even Flickr. You can usually check the EXIF data on most shots there. I've shot weddings with the Sigma 17-70 and Sigma 17-50 2.8 and i really like the 17-50 images but miss the longer reach..sometimes. For me having a quiet lens really makes a difference at weddings so from your choices the Pentax 16-85 may be the better choice. If you have to crank up the ISO just edit the noise out in post processing. I also use the Tamron 70-200 2.8 for most of the portraits I do at events and weddings. The sound of the screw drive isn't a factor there where the Sigma shines during the ceremony with it silent focusing.

It's been awhile since I've posted a photo here but I think it's time. Here are a couple of shots I took with my Pentax SMC A 35-105. It's still one of my most used lenses when I'm just out and about. Once I can save up enough money I'll try it out on the full frame Pentax Sign of Spring Bloom by bass3587, on Flickr Sign of Spring by bass3587, on Flickr

Don't let anyone tell you you've wasted your time and money buying a Pentax. Just go out, take a few portraits and show it to them. Nuff said!

First, I don't want this to be one of those my camera is better than your camera threads but just an observation on the quality the K3 can produce.
One of my shooting partners had an event coming up and was debating on needing a backup for it. She shoots with a Canon 70D, Sigma 24-70 2.8 and a 18-270. We've shot multiple events before in the past and generally had a blast shooting great images for the customers. Recently she has had a couple of portrait and events she was shooting that were for some really nice clients. She was worried that her camera wasn't best suited for the event. She asked to borrow my K3 with the Tamron 70-200 2.8 and Sigma 17-70C to compliment her on the shoot. Since that first shoot she's borrowed my kit about 3 times to do events and everyone just loves the colors and quality of the images. On the last event I think she only used her camera for two shots. The rest were with mines. Everyone raved about how vibrant and rich the colors were. The exposure was spot on!
I have noticed that since I upgraded from the K5 to the K3 the Tamron 70-200 focuses a lot faster and I'm getting more in focus shots than misses. I really like that combo for portraits. My partner has hinted that she is thinking about getting a new backup camera and I think it's going to be a Pentax. She really got excited when I told her about the upcoming full frame (whenever that happens) :) She has constantly mentioned that her camera doesn't produce images as rich as hers and that she spends a lot of time editing her pictures in Photoshop and used very little editing when shooting with the Pentax.
I guess I just wanted to say that it's nice when someone else recognizes the quality that Pentax can produce. Pentax really needs to work on their advertising and marketing!

I still use mine as a second body for weddings and events. You have a great camera so take the weekend and just shoot! Don't worry about anything else. Get a feel for the camera and enjoy

Tethering and better AF. I have no doubt being a Pentax the IQ will be excellent but I want it to be able to compete with the Canikons FF. Tethering is only available for the medium format and it needs to be for APSC and FF.

I voted for 645 lenses but that's a given. I think they will announce some really rudimentary style p&s camera. Wait I'm being pessimistic but they may give us a new camera carry bag with Ricoh branding.:p

Biggest reason is that I got them is that I wanted to evaluate both. Well I ended up liking both. I actually enjoy the Sigma better for indoor events which I actually shoot more of than outdoor events. The Sigma is also a lot faster and IMO sharper @70mm than the Pentax so I don't have to bump the ISO up so high.
The Pentax with its WR is an added bonus and is to me the perfect tool for vacations. That and a fast 1.7-1.8 fast 50 and I'm set.
Add far as image quality I taken more pictures with the Sigma than the Pentax so I favor the Sigma. I haven't shot any pictures in a studio so results may change. They are both equally quiet and fast focusing so it's a tie there(not actually measured just perceived).
So while it seems like I would prefer the Sigma I'll actually keep both. Call it LBA.:D

This is my latest acquisition. I waited to include everything in one shot. First and foremost is a new K3 sporting the new Sigma 17-70 Contemporary lens. Next up is the new camera bag that came with K3. It's a new one for me, a Ruggard Commando 36 shoulder bag. Next is a new Pentax DA 50 1.8 lens and last is a 32MB card that came with the package. I'm so ready to go out and take some pictures with all of this new gear. |
