K-1 Crop Function

As far as I know, there is no DA * 400mm, but the simplified answer is yes.
If my math is right, 400mm f/5.6 at ISO100 on APS-C or crop mode is roughly like using 600mm f/8.5 at ISO400 on FF on full mode.

EDIT: and 300/4 on crop is like 450/6 on FF.

Isn't it just a strap for the carry case? Looks like one would fit.

Top wheel direction

So I'm finally taking the time to actually shoot my K-1, and I like it. There's one problem, however.

I tend to shoot manual, with aperture on the back wheel, shutter time on the front, and ISO on the top. Which is great, except that the direction of the top wheel feels counter-intuitive.

Convinced that this must be configurable, I scanned through the settings, but only found the setting to reverse the direction of ALL the wheels.

Does anyone here know how to reverse the direction of just the top wheel?

Thanks.

A lot of ad hominem in this thread. Whatever. I didn't take offense at the warning. I merely found it to clash with my experience.

Hey, good for them.

That's another possibility, of course. But if you have to explain a joke, it isn't funny. And I'm not alone in not getting it.

Yeah, I noticed that too. Funny thing is, apart from not overpraising the AF, their review of the K-1 was very positive. In fact, the warning was the only thing I didn't agree with.

I guess they've been burnt by a vocal minority amongst the pentax fanbase. It's too bad really, I've never seen this "zealous anger" of which they speak.

The SR is created by moving the sensor around, including moving it further away from the center of the image, potentially making the corners both darker and less sharp.

An in-body SR camera quite naturally demands a bigger image, or conversely, an in-body SR camera will have worse corner performance.

Bah, cyberphoto states: "Finns i lager", whilst fotokungen still just says "Orderstatus: Mottagen". Did I choose the wrong store?

Holiday half-week in Sweden the latter half of this week. Would have liked to play with the K-1.

Ah well. Patience.

Question: Did you use the in-camera SR? If you did, that might have decreased corner performance.
Not that your results really differ from what I expected.

I will likely shoot 12MP JPGs for the per-pixel performance and easily-shareable size, but also RAW so I can get back the extra res in post if I want.

So the specs for K-1 so far says USB-2 for connectivity.

This confuses me, seeing as how the images will be around half again the size of K3-II ones and K3-II is USB3.

Do you think this is a spec mistake, or truly a regression?

Just something I noticed.

The Gold LX is a real thing, as far as I can tell not having seen it in the flesh.

From Wikipedia:

QuoteQuote:

In October 1981, Pentax made available 300 limited edition Pentax LX Gold cameras to celebrate having produced 10 million SLR cameras, the first camera manufacturer to reach that milestone according to the accompanying certificate. The camera and its SMC 1:1.2 50 mm lens is partly gold plated and partly covered in brown reptile skin, while some details are made of brown plastic, and it came with a brown ever-ready case. Cameras for some markets such as the U.S. have brown leather instead of reptile skin supposedly due to import laws. The actual number of cameras made is somewhat higher than 300 since a few were retained at Pentax reserved for their own use. The actual number for sale however was 300 cameras according to Pentax in Tokyo. It is a superb example of Japanese camera workmanship.

That by itself doesn't make the seller honest, of course.

Another googling turns up gold Contax RTSes being a thing too.

-- from Radioactive lenses - Camerapedia

Most likely, the alarmist sentiment and the stop in production comes from the cancer risk of those eyepieces.

As for yellowing, the web is full of people telling you to UV treat radioactive lenses to clear them.

This is not as easy as one might think. Just looking at a connected voltmeter is unlikely to render the correct voltage. You'd need an oscilloscope for that.

Interviews and manuals suggest that the flash sync socket is shielded against high voltages, but it was never specified just how high.

There was some discussion of the Miranda 930 TDC in an earlier thread, but no definite conclusion was reached. Personally, I wouldn't worry about using the flash with a sync cord, but don't take that as an assurance.

And don't forget fuji. That 27 may have very different optical constraints, but the lens is still very small, and it does have a motor inside it, as well as an electronic aperture actuator.

So what are my whishes (except for FF)?

Wifi phone/computer tether
4k 60fps raw filming
SSD persistant cache
longer shutter times selectable
very low base ISO, or taking several exposures in sequence and blending them.

FF 645 CMOS is not impossible, it's just that Ricoh's current MF market strategy is to bridge DSLR technology and undercut everyone on price. At around the $30000 price point they would lose that, and they wouldn't make the margins for the enterprise to be viable.

Eventually however, someone will crack the problem of stitching together smaller chips cheaply and well. That would make prices scale much better with sensor area. Actually, fuji/panasonic are looking good with their "organic" design, because all the electronics go behind the sensor surface instead of around it. But we'll see what happens if they ever get there.

change a K mount lens into M42?
Posted By topace

Without having a K lens in front of me, my answer would be "It depends on the lens".

The M42 mount is smaller than the K mount, and usually, the back element sticks out level with or behind the mount area. Whether the lens could be M42 depends, I guess, on if you can get the mount part to fit around whatever sticks out.

I do notice, however, that the 60-120 is available in many mounts, so maybe the back element has a lot of clearance on K and M42.

The actual adaptation sounds pretty hard thogh. Essentially, you take away the K bayonet, replacing it with a custom-manufactured M42 plate, made to spec with regards to the thickness and dimensions of the K plate. These things are made with extreme precision and I wouldn't trust 3D-printed stuff. For the best result, the part should be measured and updated in an iterative process. It might cost quite a bit and I'm not sure who would make/sell it.

Even if by some miracle, it should come out on photokina, If it's below $4000, I'm pretty much set. Got the lenses too: FA limited series, Tokina 28-70 as a normal zoom, A*85 for portraits, A 20/2.8 for wide angle, tokina and elicar 90 macros etc.

If pentax doesn't do it, I'm probably going to go adapted as soon as someone that's not Sony releases a mirrorless FF. But a Pentax DSLR would of course be preferable.
