My first attempt at shooting the stars. Taken on a camping trip in Sequoia National Park last month. Had to hold the lens open manually but maybe I need to buy a cable release for next time :)

Thanks for posting. It looks beautiful there. The last pic is my favorite. I've been itching to swing by the battlefield myself. Maybe I'll stay motivated long enough now to actually get out there myself.

Thanks for sharing. It's a beautiful place indeed. I really like the third shot, but they're all lovely. My own family originally emmigrated to the US from Poschiavo, a little town that appears a beautiful as this one. Hopefully some day I'll get a chance to see such a place myself.

Sometimes this works to your advantage though. I was out shooting recently and ran into a bunch of people having a picnic brunch along the Potomac. They picked me out as a "good photographer" based on the look of my K10D. After atking a couple of pictures of their group outing, they proceeded to offer me a whole assortment of baked goodies from their meal. Upon returning with said hoard to my wife and daughter, I was granted much more lattitude with regards to "rant #1" since they had something to munch on while I when crazy with my camera throughout the rest of the morning.
All in all, everyone made out well :^)

Nice Compositions ... looks like a beautiful place to visit. I agree that the bird is my favorite. Do you know what the characters on #2 say? The last several were beautiful, but seemed a little dark. I hope you don't mind, but I took the liberty of playing with one of them to try lightening it up.

I agree with this comment. Having made the move to digital myself a few months ago, I went through much of the same process you're going through now. I didn't even consider Pentax until I was deep into my research, but after reading and testing a bunch of gear, the Pentax system just "felt" right to me. I feel the differences in IQ and related items are largely in the noise compared to the skill/experience/enthusiasm of the photographer. Bottom line, I think like my Pentax shoots, so it's very natural for me to switch shooting modes and make changes on the fly. This keeps me shooting more often and inproving my own skills.
My recommendation ... both systems are capable of taking great pictures, so figure out which one you're more likely to fall in love with. The best way to do that is to take each of them out for a couple of dates before making a purchase.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I've really been enjoying gettting back to photography after a multi-year break and this forum's been great.
We're finally getting our first few warm/sunny days to go with spring, and I'm very happy.
Incidentally Buddah, the blossoms are pretty much gone now, so better wait until next year. IMO it's also worth a vacation day to go on a weekday and avoid the crowds.

The pinkish cast resulted from an experiment with a little warming filter in photoshop. I'd talked myself into liking it, but am still not sold.

Here are a series of photos from a trip to the Washington DC Cherry Blossom Festival last week. I was disappointed it was a cloudy day, but still had a lot of fun.

Thanks for the advice. I'll give the Rocket blower a try and then try and insitute some better procedures to prevent future problems. Then I can go have fun with my new 16-45 f/4 that was delivered today!

After a weekend trip to the National Air and Space museum annex, I noticed what I believe to be a dust particle on several of my pictures. Multiple cycles of the dust removal system don't appear to have solved the problem. How should I deal with this problem? The photo below was shot with K10D & 35mm f2.0. The dust is in the bottom right-hand corner of the image, next to the tower, about 5 segments up.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Just to throw in another perspective, I opted to skip the kit lens and bought the 35mm f2. It is quite a bit more expensive, but gives me plenty of light to work with, is sharp as a tack, and gives me some really neat flexability with my depth of field. Also, by forcing me to "zoom with my feet" I tend to think more as I compose my shots. I expect I'll add a zoom before too long, but for me, having a good prime allows me to do a ton while I grow my personal style.

Elements does allow RAW processing using a stripped down version of Adobe Camera RAW. It's has most, but not all, of the RAW processing features from the full photoshop version. If you dig a little on this forum you'll find lot's of threads about the pluses and minuses of the various tools available. I happen to like Elements, and since you've got access for free, I'd definitely play around a little before spending money on something else.

Great shot. I love the contrast between the curves of the building on the right and the straight edges on the left ... but wait it curves too. It also nice you were able to keep extraneous details/subjects from creeping in.

Greetings Everyone!
I've been reading the forum for the last month or so and finally got around to joining. Here's a little bit about me ...
I got into photography back in high school. I saved for a long time to buy a Minolta X-700 and gradually collected a few lenses. I also developed a love for the darkroom. While I flirted with going to school for photography, practicality got the better of me and I became an engineer instead. Once I lost access to the darkroom (and the free time to use it) my interest (and skills) atrophied.
After getting married, I cautiously stepped back in with a digital P&S, and began to grudgingly admit that maybe digital cameras & processing software were worth pursuing. The deal was clinched with recent birth of my first child and watching an old high school friend of mine (who did go pro) come out and do a photoshoot with our family. After spending the last couple of months learning everything I could about DSLRs, I finally settled on a K10D w/SMC 35mm f2 as the best equipment to replicate the feel, philosophy, and photo quality I'd learned to love with my X-700 and prime lenses.
So here I am, excited about my great new equipment and my 3mo old subject. The only thing I miss is the smell of the fixer on my hands ...
