Why i bought a Pentax K-r

Before buying my Pentax K-r i had spent the better part of a month scanning reviews and articles and even seeking advice from friends as to what camera to purchase Canon or Nikon and which model to get.
I was finally set to purchase the Nikon D3100 for around $899 when i was in a camera store and spotted the K-r.
I was instantly taken by the price differenc and this caused me to rethink my purchase and research the K-r some more.
I did of course settle on the K-r and here are some of the reasons i did so for those who are also considering this camera

1. Price - the K-r i found to be considerably cheaper than it's competitors as well as cheaper in price for lenses and accesories
2. Compatibility - the K-r is compatible with so many older lenses unlike the other brands
3. Solid feel - I found the other 2 major brands entry level cameras to be bulky and plastic feeling the K-r is smaller and has a solid feel more like it's film cousins
4. Feature packed - i was impressed with the amount of useful features offered with the K-r - digital filters - 6fps shooting
5. Experience - Looking back at days gone by Pentax in the past where the brand to own and Nikon and Canon have only really dominated since the digital revolution.
6. Ease of use - i found the menu system and placment of buttons on the K-r to be easy to use and get to.

The only down side i could find with the K-r is the lack of 1080p video but i have no intention of using a DSLR as a video camera so i didn't find it to be a drawback.
At the end of the day i now have a great camera that is easy to use and is full of great features, i have 5 lenses a spare battery, flash and i heap of accessories all for about the same price that the Nikon D3100 would have cost me for the single lens kit.
I think i made the right choice and hope this is helpful to others.

that is a very insightful article and i believe explains what has happened to this lens in a past life.
When i first got the lens it had obvious signs it has been opened before.

i don't see any etching as such but looking through the lens it does look smokey and not clear as i believe it should, this is what has led me to pull it down and clean it several times .

This is very helpful dms
It seems as i suspected that the lens is damaged or not performing as it should due to me taking it apart to clean it.
I would grab a filter but being that the cost of replacing this lens would be not much more than the price of a good filter i think i will track down another one through eBay.
Thanks for your help

i just need to know if this is normal for a lens like this or if it is a fault or lack of cleaning the lens optics properly.
If it is a problem with the lens i will replace it with another of the same series but i do not want to purchase another only to find it will be the same

i have the following lens SMC Pentax-M 50mm 1:1.7 prime lens that i purchased second hand and at the time it had some fungus and dust inside the lens.
As i did not pay much for it i decided to take it apart and clean the fungus from the optics using lens cleaner and alcohol with good success.
I have now had the lens apart a number of times because it appears to produce a smokey haze in certain light conditions - see attached photos.
It only happens in certain light and does at times produce very good clear and sharp photos.
Is this a fault of the lens or my lack of knowledge of photography and how to use a fast prime lens in difficult light?
please help!!!

The DA 50-200 is a great lens and one i use quite a lot but i do find myself often at the end of its range and needing a little more zoom, this is where i pull out the sigma 100-300 but it would be nice to have one lens with a bigger range like the DAL 55-300, my old Fuji camera had a 28-300 and that is what i became used to using.

There's a sucker born every minute and when i bought my camera i was one of them and spent an extra $40 to get two cheap lens filters.
I have had problems with reflection and ghosting especially in long exposure night shots.

spot metering is something i'll need to look into as up until now everything i have done in manual mode has been pure guess work.
I will be picking up a speedlight tomorrow and that will be another new thing to learn - the learning never seems to end.

Thanks Alberts this shot was done on full manual mode - i set the iso as low as it would go, set the f stop as low as it would go for this lens and then played around with the shutter speed until i got a good picture.
This was the third shot out of five i took of the same scene.
Learning to guess the settings and experiment is part of the fun.

Budget Speedlight

I am looking to purchase a budget speedlight for my Pentax K-r and as i wont be using it much i want to spend as little as possible.
I am aware that you get what you pay for so i am in the market for an inexpensive but reasonable quality speedlight but do not want to spend hundreds on something that may only get occasional use.
Can anyone give any suggestions on a good speedlight that is easy to use and will work well in most situations
Please keep in mind i am still learning to use my camera

Thanks

Just keep in mind guys that the reason the background is grey is due to the level of stage smoke in the building - it's amazing how much smoke they pump out during an average service.
The attached photo gives an idea of what i am having to deal with.
If anyone can give any tips on shooting in this type of environment it would be appreciated.
Lights + stage smoke = hazy photos

I get what you guys are saying about the blue hour but realistically as Bruce has pointed out this is Melbourne and it had not long finished raining.
If you look closely it was a very overcast night and i was using a low iso to darken the sky and hide the cloud cover, i was after the lights and reflection on the water more that the gloomy sky.
I will be cropping the photo to remove the building on the left and tidy the shot up a bit.
Thanks to all who have given feedback i appreciate all your comments.

Here you go Bruce just for you - this was taken on the same night - i wasn't really prepared for this shot so the camera settings are not right and this only happens once every hour so i didn't have time to get the shot right

I would like to see a color version of this photo as i don't think the fly itself stands out enough from the rest of the photo - it's all a bit dark
Also the fly is not quite in focus here - it seems the focal point is the leaf - i would have tried to get the fly's body in focus as well although with macro and a limited focal range this may have been difficult.

You guys are so right on this one, adding more contrast or boosting the blacks would make the subject pop out of the scene - thanks for you input

Thanks for the advise Falke, i have tried this photo in b&w and do prefer to shoot most of my stuff in b&w but with this photo it seems to take something away from it.
Can't really explain why but i do prefer this one in color even though there is not much color there i think b&w removes some of the contrast but thanks for your feedback

first picture was fine as far as color saturation goes as long as there is plenty of contrast and shadows or blacks to support the saturation
second version looks almost washed out as if the brightness was pulled out too much
Try to darken the levels, this will make the photo pop out without taking away from the vibrance of the colors
