Your shutter speeds are 1/4 and 1/15 according to the photos. I am going to take a wild guess...these were hand held with no tripod used?

Deciding on a Pentax DSLR to buy

Great stuff, all. Now that I'm past all the Christmas fun, I'm delving back in and starting to read all the links suggested above. I'm feeling really close to buying the Pentax KP from B&H.

A few questions while I'm doing that:

- Warranties
How do you feel about them? (I need to cut dollars where I can - but also have had good experiences with warranties on stereo equipment in the past)

- Flash
I've been using the built-in flash on my Nikon D40 for years - which means I rarely use it (because it's so un-subtle) and so I try to do a lot with natural light. So I definitely want to get an external/mounted flash for my new Pentax. Any suggestions of one you love for a model like the KP, that is lightweight and value-priced?

- Battery Grip

I'd never heard this term before this thread. Get it for sure, or meh?
Note: I've rarely run out of battery on a shoot, so I'd get it mostly for what seems to be more ease in holding the camera with a long lens for a while.
Also, is a battery grip quickly removable - if I'm using a small lens and would rather go "more compact"?

- Camera Bag
I'd love a recommendation on a bag that you love, that can hold the camera with a lens on it and 1 or 2 other lenses in the bag.

- Other tips/caveats
Any other tips or warnings, etc, you want to share with me before I move forward? For instance, I had been lusting after the K-1 and its full-frame prowess. But my budget is much more in line with the KP, and my gut says the K-1 is overkill for what I do (see above). Your comments have helped convince me I'm fine with the KP. But, any more thoughts?

Thanks y'all!

There is this rule in classical photography to keep the shutter speed at least 1/(focal length), but with APSC sensors, people even like to push it to 1/(2*focal length). So I would try keeping it faster than 1/100. Since you have a K-5II, you shouldn't worry about using a higher ISO, the camera deals with noise very well. Alternatively, you might want to use an external flash (bounced or diffused) and stop down to f8 and a low ISO.
Oh, and one more tip, if you shoot raw, you might want to overexpose the photos a little bit when using high ISO, and then bring the brightness down a little when processing them. That will reduce noise a little bit and keep a good colour saturation. Hope I'm not being presumptuous and giving advice you already know lol

My experience with the Pentax k-30 @ B&H (BIG PICTURES)

So I dropped by B&H today after getting back to NYC so I could look at the Pentax k-30. I thought I'd write a review. Many thanks to the B&H person who allowed me to stand there taking video and using my memory card in the k-30:

Words:
The k-30 feels like a great camera overall. It's ergonomics feel better than the k-5. The grip is about the same, but it feels like my pinkie has more to grip than on the k-5. The front dial is easy to access, as well as almost all the buttons. The rear dial is less accessible than on my k-x or the k-5. The mode dial is very accessible, but is also tighter (my k-x has a very loose mode dial).

Autofocus is very very quick. Much faster than my k-x. It's as good as the k-5. I didn't bother checking focus accuracy - it seemed good. The viewfinder is very nice, and the rear LCD is awesome. The rear LCD is very bright and sharp. Menu functions were generally the same, but I was unable to turn on tracking AF (it's different than my k-x). Some of the options were shifted around in the menu, and there are a bunch of new (or maybe not new, on the k-5) options that I've never seen before.

The camera has a sharper/higher pitched sound compared to my k-x, but it is louder than the k-5 (see video later). The framerate is quick, but the buffer isn't that deep (see video later). I was using a Sandisk Extreme 16GB Class 10 card with up to 45mb read - I'm not sure if there's a faster card to use.]

The body felt very comfortable to hold due to the rubber materials. It felt a little lacking with the 18-55 in front. It definitely deserves more professional lenses mounted on it. The white one looks practically the same as my k-x (well, a little shinier). The blue one looks like blue mica paint on some cars. I didn't see a black one in the store.

I can link full sized images if requested. I am using the imagewide tag so click on the pictures to view in 1024 format. Everything was shot in DNG.

Shot with my k-x and Sigma 50 F1.4~

Shot with the k-30:

ISO 25,600 shot that is well exposed.

My subjective thought is: A well exposed ISO 25,600 shot on the k-30 is absolutely usable for online images. It's just awesome.

Videos:
I don't know how to embed the videos to load in this post (unless it does automatically), but the titles are there. Including the much asked for, shutter (mirror) sound comparison between the k-30, k-x, and k-5.

A warning to those new to the hobby of photography.

It starts simple and innocent, maybe you have a camera phone and think "hey this is kinda fun" or you have a Point and shoot and decide you want better photos, or maybe you found that old K1000 your parents tossed in a box and want to take it out and use it.

With your first SLR you get whatever comes on it, maybe its a new variable aperture kit zoom, maybe its an old M50 F2, you go out and take a few pics, realize how fun it is.

But then things start to go downhill, you realize, "Drat, I can't quite fit that all into the shot" so you buy a bit wider lens. And then its "drat I scared that bird away" so you buy a longer lens, and then its too dark and along comes a faster lens. Then you read about the amazing image quality on this or that lens, or the wonderful rendering/color/bokeh/whatever and buy a few more. Then you get bored and browse Ebay one day and all hell breaks loose. Pretty soon you have lenses both good and terrible coming from all corners of the globe, many in brands you have never even heard of simply because they are an amazing deal and you want to see what sort of pictures they produce.
By this point whether or not you are willing to admit it, you have a scientifically diagnosable condition known as lens buying addiction.

But wait, there's more.

While on ebay you spy another camera body, its so cheap, and it even takes the same lenses you already have so you buy it.
But then you hear about this TOTALLY amazing other body that everyone has to try out at least once. So you buy one of those, but it takes different lenses so now you need to start buying those lenses too. Eventually you pick up a few more used cameras you found at garage sales to see how they work, and by this point you have the second horn of the devil in you, Camera buying addiction.

How can you avoid this fate, well for most of you its too late, might as well just get a second job and get divorced, you can only hide the steady stream of packages and the fact that you are on a first name basis with the post man the fedex guy and the UPS guy for so long, and your spouse wont believe you were out late "just getting some long exposures and night shots" forever. Eventually they will wonder why your camera was brown yesterday and suddenly turned black today even though you "only bought just the one".

We won't even discuss darkrooms and film costs and digital processing equipment.

For those lucky few that haven't yet fallen into this abyss there is one chance, pick your camera and lens category and never stray. Commit to it as if you were married to it.
For me it is Pentax only, this prevented me from coming home yesterday with a Kodak camera that was so old it may have taken a picture of Moses. Of those Pentax it is K mount only, that eliminates all the seductive Asahi Pentax and Spotmatics from my lineup and prevents any sort of M42 lens buying mischief. I also only buy full frame lenses with aperture rings so everything I have will work with everything else. This has saved me literally thousands in lens buying costs as the entire DA line is off the list and most of the FA's can be found used if I want newer at some point. I also can never own a lens of a type or length that I already have covered in another lens. And always I must buy the fastest version I can afford/find. Other than a few missing (and expensive) faster primes, my lens selection is already nearly complete. Eventually Pentax will gift the world with a digital FF and my bodies will be complete, at least until the next model digital comes down in price. And some day an LX may fall in my lap cheap and I wouldn't say no, but otherwise my film cameras need no additions.

You have been warned and my conscience is clear, what you do now is up to you.

"Lower cost products just won't come to market and those that will be out there, will be priced more and more for profitability"

This is such a vague, undefined statement, that it can be applied successfully to any moment in the past, present, or future.
