*PETITION* Lets put an end to the crazy online Pentax lens prices in the US!

Same here, but I switched in 2011. If the prices stay where they are on Pentax lenses I will probably just go back home to Canon and give up my flirtation with Pentax cameras. I am happy otherwise with my Pentax equipment, but I will never have a full complement of weather proof lenses for my K-5 now that they have approximately doubled in price since I decided to buy into the Pentax family. I bought my last new Pentax lens the day before the online pricing change and I will never buy another new lens from them as long as the prices stay where they currently are. At least the new policy should help me get good prices for my lightly used DA* lenses when I am ready to leave.

I have already posted my support for this thread - but this is an excellent point and I would like to comment.

18 months ago I was ready to get my first DSLR. I have a long history with Pentax film cameras and I was intrigued by the chance to use my 35mm primes on a DSLR. Eventually I realized that the K-5 was a very special camera and I jumped in (with some reservations about build quality) and I have been very, very happy with my choice.

But part of my decision process was based on the availability of reasonably priced, high quality Pentax glass and I quickly acquired a DA 18-135, a DA* 16-50, and a DA* 50-135. These are all excellent lenses and a real value at the Internet pricing. I had already envisioned getting a really long lens, a macro lens and some more primes. Then - bam - the new pricing policy hit and I have not gotten a single lens since.

So this policy aimed at supporting B&M stores has in my case stopped me from buying any more Pentax lenses. Such a shame for me and for Pentax.

I am lucky in having a local B&M outlet for Pentax products. I bought my K-5 body from them because of my quality concerns with Pentax products (now there is a strategy for supporting B&M outlets!). But my subsequent lens purchases have all been from B&H and until internet prices come back to a rational level I am done acquiring any new Pentax products.

If this had been the case 18 months ago I would have probably had a few nostalgic moments thinking about Pentax products from my past and I would have just bought a Cannon DSLR instead. Ricoh really needs to think about this impact on prospective Pentax buyers and how they are really telling us to just move on to a more stable brand.

I have not bought any new Pentax lenses since this new pricing policy went into effect, it just seems wrong to pay a lot more for a Pentax lens than they had cost previously. I moved up my purchase of my DA* 50-135 to avoid the jump -- thanks to the warning of the increase from Pentax Forum!

It sure was a great way to fix my starting to get serious LBA though!

One angle about the K5II I never hear...

Wow - what a lot of ways to spin a nice update of a great camera! The K-5 has many, many positive features - it is the reason that I am a Pentax shooter today. Taking a wonderful camera body and updating the few things that people don't like seems like a sensible way to move forward to me.

At some point many companies have such a great product that reinventing the wheel just does not make sense. Exhibit A - the new iPhone. Not as revolutionary as many people hoped, but when you are starting with an almost perfect product you really don't need to change things just for the sake of change.

I have a DA* 16-50 and I love it. I also have a DA* 50-135 which is the best zoom lens that I have (so far) had the pleasure of using.

But I also have a DA 18-135 and that is a very good lens to start out with. It gives you the normal POV that you are looking for as well as a decent zoom range. I used Pentax film cameras a long time ago and with those I only shot with primes. But I have found that the higher quality Pentax zoom lenses paired with the K-5 body can produce images that rival those made with even a limited prime lens.

So many lenses - so little time!

Not impressed k5 pics not sharp

I agree - return it all and start over again. My K-5 consistently impresses me with the sharpness of the images that it produces with a variety of lenses.

My 18-135 is the least expensive Pentax lens that I shoot with - I bought it to have a light weight, compact walkaround lens - but I am consistently pleased with the high quality images that it makes. I would have to work hard to make images of the quality of the one that you posted - as in actually do something wrong on purpose to force it to perform that badly.

And BTW - a troll is someone that makes bogus posts on forums to upset the legitimate posters and start online battles. People would suspect that you might be one based on the limited proof that you have shown us and the fact that the K-5 is well known for effortlessly cranking out amazing images. It is kind of like saying that I bought a new BMW and it has lousy handling.

Someone forgot to tell B&H about the price drop.

On 4/30/2012 I bought a DA* 50-135 from B&H for $849.95 (Thanks for the heads up PF!). Today that lens lists for $1599.95 @ B&H. I wanted a DFA100 Macro WR which is currently $849 @ B&H, up from about $620. I also wanted a DA* 60-250 which is currently $1999.95 @ B&H, up from about $1200.

My LBA is still well under control here.

Best camera in the world

The K-5 is the best camera in the world - for me - that is why I bought mine! The look, feel, solidity, functional design, lens selection and superb IQ make it a real standout. Yes, a new Pentax replacement will arrive soon and I bet it will be very nice, but I can't imagine giving up my K-5 for a very long time.

I also have to mention the Spotmatic - what a wonderful machine. I still have mine although I never shoot film anymore. On many photo shoots with friends back in the day we would exchange cameras for one roll of film. The Spotmatic never came back without comments about its size, ease of use and quiet operation, and regrets that they had whatever competitor they owned.

Sounds kind of familiar now that I think of it!

I don't think you will be sorry. I have the DA 18-135 as my walk around lens and it produces very nice images for a lens so compact and light. The K-5 is a superb camera body and unless you have some of the well documented issues (of which I have none) you will never regret buying one. It has superior design, feel and performance over any other similarly priced camera body, even so late in its life cycle.

The lens price hike is a real disappointment to me personally. Before the price jump I bought a DA* 16-50 and a DA* 50-135 and I absolutely love them both. I had a budding case of LBA and the crazy increases in price threw a bucket of cold water on that problem -- I have not bought a single lens since the huge increases hit. Luckily I have a minimum set of lenses that serve me well for now. What happens in the future for me depends on how the lens prices settle out. Some lenses have come back to almost pre-gouge prices, but it has made me take a wait and see attitude on accumulating a more complete set of Pentax lenses. If the prices remain at the current levels I will have to at least consider another brand. The lens price advantage that Pentax once had when buying online made it a very attractive system. At the full retail cost I might very well defect to the Nikcanon camp one of these days. IMO they both offer superior lenses if you have to pay full retail for Pentax ones. As newly introduced Nikon lenses have become more affordable, the Pentax lenses have in some case doubled in price, making them no longer a good value.

%*$#^(&! The Lens Release Button Fell Off my K-5!

Any of these fixes just mean that you still have the button and can change lenses - nice I know, but it will still will need to go in for repair. I can't imagine that it is good to have that cir-clip floating around inside your camera body. I think I would want to stop using my K-5 until it was fixed anyway to avoid other damage. Luckily mine is still on there, but then it is less than one year old.

Yeah - I don't get the point of this thread.

My iPhone 4 was a decent camera, for a phone. What it was not however was a useful phone or a data transfer device and it went back after just three weeks (think antenna gate).

My HTC Android phone does not produce images of the quality of my iPhone, even though the pixel count is greater. That just proves that there is a lot more to a quality sensor than how many pixels it possesses.

But my Vietnamese DA* lenses produce stunning images mounted on my K-5 - at least in my hands. If you are making better images with an iPhone than with a K-5 I suggest you sell the K-5 and find a new hobby.

Mark, your postings just get better and better - which I would have thought impossible.

The dog walk image is amazing, and as someone else has already pointed out, reminiscent of a painting from the old masters. The image of the Great Mell Fell is stunning - the colors, perspective and composition are superb. I particularly like the feeling of movement from right to left across the foreground.

I have been an amateur photographer for many years and I feel very humble when I view your work.

That makes at least two of us. I had just finished buying zooms for a bit (thanks to the warning on this forum my last purchase was on 3/31!) and I had just started to consider primes when the prices effectively rocketed upwards.

More lens purchases are currently on hold for me and luckily my DA* zooms produce some very nice images.

WOW - Arizona Dave - those are wonderful images.

I live in Ohio but I am temporarily in Phoenix for work until next Friday. I didn't have the proper case yet to bring my K-5 along and your pictures make me just that much sadder that I couldn't! I have tomorrow off and I will be out even with the heat, but the only pictures I will be taking will be with my phone. Note to self - get that camera case sorted out before this situation comes up again.

Same here - I have my K-5 and a minimum number of nice lenses and I won't be getting any more stuff until I see where the brand and pricing go. In a few years I may decide to sell my Pentax stuff and move to another brand - only time will tell. But that will be more likely if prices stay where they currently are, as the value is not as strong as it was when I started buying into Pentax 8 months ago.

I ordered my DA* 50-135 on March 31st to avoid the jump - I paid B&H $849 and it is now $1,599. What a great way for them to help me cure my LBA - I won't be getting any more lenses for a while now, but luckily I have the minimum that I need.

If the price structure stays the way it is, it will work as intended for me though - I will most likely get my next lens from a local B&M. My 50-135 arrived damaged and I am waiting for a replacement right now. I predict that even if this does not hurt Pentax sales in the long run, it will mean a lot fewer people buying online. Amazon currently is selling the 50-135 for $1,149.99 which is better than B&H's price. But for the next lens I wanted, the DA* 60-250 they both are now listing it for $1999 and it is on long term hold for now.
