Rule of Thirds? How come?

Whatever the reasoning, people have found the rule of thirds to be beautiful since antiquity.

The Greeks loved to use the golden ratio in their art and architecture, which is almost (though admittedly not quite) equal to the rule of thirds.

UV filter vs Protector

I prefer hoods, or even no protection to having a filter in front of my glass at all times.
With a filter, you lose the benefits of the wonderful SMC coating, and you'll be far more prone to flare.

I think "protection" is somewhat overrated, at least for anyone who is not a pro journalist or something. As long as you use due care, I don't think you'll have any problems.

Digital Crop vs. Perspective

I've noticed that if I take the 18-55 that came with my K100D set on 18, and compare it side-by-side with my SMC 28 on my Spotmatic, despite having the same FOV, the image from the k100 looks like crap compared to the Spotmatic.

So what I'm wondering is if the digital sensor crop only affects the field of view, while the perspective from the lens' real focal length is still what is seen.

I'm wondering because if I get the 43 or 40, which is a focal length I like on film, will it have the same feeling aside from the tighter frame on a digital camera?

The Pentax Look

I think I might have to go against the grain here a little bit.
As well, it may not be what OP had in mind, but I think its worthwhile all the same.

As I'm still awaiting on the arrival of my K100D, I can't comment on the 'look' of the Pentax digital bodies or lenses.
However I have a Spotmatic with a modest amount of M42 gear and I've found that (at least the old) Pentax glass has a certain feel to it that can't be touched by anything else I've seen. My 50/1.4 has a wonderful 'something' to it that I've not seen replicated in any other 50mm lens. All my other Takumar glass has this same aspect to a lesser degree.

For what it's worth, I've read of people saying the 43 Limited has a special feel to it.

So, I think the 'Pentax look' lies, or at least used to lie, in the the glass that you put in front of the body.

K10D weather sealing + M42 lenses?

Thanks for the responses. Didn't think about water seeping through the mount.
I'm more worried about the body than the lens. I've had my Spotmatic out in as much pouring rain as I'm ever going to want to go outside in, without any apparent ill to my lenses, so it's not a big deal. Plus, I have some throwaway lenses that I wouldn't mind losing to a few good shots.

I think I'd still like to have the sealing in the 10 for the sake of peace of mind, even if I only ever take it out in a bit of a drizzle or a dusty day. I don't like the idea of cameras with plastic bodies and lots of electronics inside.

K10D weather sealing + M42 lenses?

Hey all,
Looking into getting either the K10D or K100D.
One of the primary things that draw me to the 10 is the weather sealing.

I've been using a Spotmatic F with a few Takumar SMC lenses, which I absolutely adore. However, I will be living abroad next year, and am looking to pick up a digital body so I don't burn through thousands of dollars worth of film/can send photos back to friends easier.
My aim is to keep shooting with my M42 glass, as I've found it to be stellar, and simply don't have the money to burn to pick up nice AF glass.

Now, I've been reading that the weather sealing doesn't do much good without one of the new sealed lenses. But I'm wondering if that's more due to all the fancy stuff in modern lenses.

If I stick an old Takumar on the front of the K10D, will I be safe from the elements?
