Pentax Q Review by PentaxForums.com (w/ micro 4/3 comparison)

Way too biased towards the Q. Too bad, I was hoping for a serious review and not just a "Hooray for Pentax!".

The reviewer obviously doesn't know much about mFT cameras and fails on such basic topics like lens corrections on mFT, that I can hardly believe he actually used an mFT longer than just for this review.
Yes, sure the whole menu system etc. feels more logical on the Pentax camera, when you only have profound experience with Pentax cameras...
Why not choosing the better handling E-P3 or a GF1? Or the smaller E-PM1 or GF3? The E-PL3 sits somewhere in the middle and has nothing to do with a Q.

And why do you draw conclusions about image quality by using only a rather mediocre lens on the Olympus? Are we talking about interchangable lens cameras here or what?
You should have taken something like the Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 or the Panasonic 25mm f/1.4. Both would be much closer to the field of view of the Pentax prime and literally kill the Q regarding resolution and general image quality. But perhaps you knew that...?

You only give mFT credit to it's absolutely undeniable strengths, like being able to work with small depth of field. The whole rest consists of "Q does not so bad" and unconsciousness of the E-PL3 as a whole (ever heard of the "super control panel"?)

I don't want to bash the Q. It's an interesting product and for it's sensor size the quality is quite good. Don't really see the point of "toy" lenses in such an expensive system, but that might just be me.
But comparing the Q to mFT (in a really meaningfull comparison) is like comparing an mFT to the Pentax 645D - there the mFT also won't do bad at all, but they are definitely very different classes of cameras we're talking about.

Best screen ever for manual focus : Canon ee-S!!!

So, after having some time playing around with my Pentax K 50mm f/1.2 I am really impressed by the ee-S screen. It makes the old lens come alive again as getting perfect focus is even at f/1.2 is far from difficult, whereas it was just a game of luck with the original screen (or the focus confirmation).

Really excellent!

They take some offers on and off depending on availability instead of just setting the stock number to zero. So some versions are on, a few hours later off, just to be on again after some more hours.
The moment I write this, the version without the markings is on and the one with markings off. But might be very different again once you check back.

Very strange behaviour, don't ask me why... ;)

But still, all your effort helped a lot of people and I guess everyone around very much appreciates this thread.

Thanks! :)

Yes, this is the one: K-5 S TYPE Focusing Screen (AF Frame) US$82.45
This is the same, but without the AF markings: K-5 S TYPE Focusing Screen US$75.54

They don't always list both. Just email them if your preferred version is not available.

Since you can buy them completely ready for installing, I recommend doing so. All this sawing and cleaning and stuff is way more hassle than I expected. Next time I will just order one, even if it costs twice as much as the Canon original.

Ah, got it. Thank you very much.

By the way, I just tried cutting the screen to the right dimensions with a hot knife. The cutting itself was surprisingly easy, but it led to rims of some molten material on both sides of the screen. So I don't recommend this method to anyone else considering this, as it's almost impossible rasping the rims down to an equal level again without damaging the more central parts.
Anyway, there's still enough space left, so I'll try with a saw next. If all fails, I can still buy a new one. ;)

Let's see, how it goes...

Hi everyone,

Following the positive response about the Canon Ee-S, I also bought one for my K-5.
But I haven't installed it yet, because there I still have a question regarding this procedure:

All of you mention that the shim has to be adjusted/changed/removed. But how do you actually get the shim out of the camera?
I couldn't do it just be picking it with the tweezers. Is it fixed somewhere and do I have to loose that fixation first? Didn't want to pull too hard and break it or anything else inside.

Please give me this one more remaining advice that stops me from nice manual focus with my fast lenses. Thanks.
