Resurrecting Pentax firmware hacking

I better start with an introduction as this is my first post. I own a K30 with a load of old manual lenses. I'm also a full time reverse engineer and I'm very interested in rebooting firmware hacking on the Pentax. However I need help and can't do it alone.

I've gone through all the previous posts on Pentax hacking as well as the useful but old Pentax hacking site. Based on this I've seen that the biggest problems for creating a hacked firmware are:
  • Need for experienced reverse engineers

  • Cost of the required tools such as IDA Pro

  • The FP instruction set

Luckily I can help with some of the above. First with experience. I'm a hardware hacker who previously ported CHDK to my Canon Powershot - I've got some experience in hacking firmware on cameras. Next with tooling, for the people who don't know you need an expensive dissasembler called IDA Pro. I have this and the tool that changes assembly into a higher level language - the decompiler. Finally is the instruction set. I've done a lot of work reverse engineering the chip that's inside the K30 and I believe newer models as well. This I think is a Fujitsu Milbeaut MB91696AM. The great thing about this is that it's based around a Dual core ARM Cortex M4 CPU. This means no horrible FP instruction set! It all ARM and that's what I'm good at.

My progress so far:
  • Decrypted the firmware

  • Performed a lot of reverse engineering. Large parts found including memory allocation functions, displaying text on screen etc

  • Found all the debug processing code

  • Found the firmware decryption routines

  • Written custom firmware that allows custom code to be run

  • Started the PHDK project

Useful links:
PHDK Wiki
Paper describing the work so far - very technical
PHDK source code

What I need (so far):
  • Service manual for a K30 (or even a similar model). This would be really useful in understanding how all the debug functionality actually works

  • Datasheet for the MB91696AM or even a very similar ARM based CPU

  • Someone to tell me the offsets to icons/text images in the binary. This would rapidly increase the amount of functions I can find!

How you can help:
  • I will need testers. Be warned there is a small chance of bricking the camera...

  • I need people to help with the disassembly. You'll need a copy of IDA Pro (or maybe notepad - see below).

  • Anyone know anyone at Pentax / Ricoh. I'm considering dropping their marketing team an email.

  • Don't request features. At the moment there is only one feature - get custom code running on the device.

  • Don't request other cameras. I own a K30 and that's what I'm working on.

One of the big things is helping with decompilation of the firmware. It's too big to do alone. Given this I can dump a massive text file with all the functions in C-like code. If anyone has some programming background this might be a good way to help out. Is anyone interested? I still want to play nice with Pentax while i'm requesting their help so I will only PM out the file.

Big issues at present

Icons / text images (fonts)

There are very few strings in the main camera code. All the text is embedded in image data. I suspect that this is as RAW bitmap data directly in the firmware. It would be really useful to get the locations of at least one of these images, then I can find the rest. I'm not quite sure how to find them but The Gimp has an option of opening RAW files and changing the offsets into it. I've had a look but with not much luck.

Give me a few weeks and I hope to be at the point where I can write custom firmware which can then execute a file on the SD card containing additional functionality. I want to perform my code changes inside the debug mode routines, this should mean it's safer as this code is not called by default. At this point some brave soul will need to Flash their camera. Once that works all we will need to do is update the executable on the SD card. Well that's the idea any. Other options are to find a method in the existing debug routines which allow this or alternatively look for an exploit.

Brain dump over.

I have found the A50/1.2 on a K-01,
with focus peaking using up-to-date firmware,
to be a very effective tool for low-light shooting.

The situations with EVFs reminds me of touch screens on phones. I found them annoying and frustrating to use until one day I tried an iPhone and it was fine. It was just a cumulation of improvements in processor speed and screen quality. I think EVFs will quite soon reach a stage where their lag is imperceptible and the dynamic range is close enough to satisfy most users. Then you are left with a long list of advantages that EVFs have over OVFs - both for users and manufacturers.

- More flexibility/customisation in what is displayed (magnification, peaking, histogram, picture review, etc.)
- More accurate AF (potentially equal to or faster than DSLR PDAF with new sensors)
- Continuous AF in video mode
- No need for calibration / no risk of misalignment due to impact (reduced cost)
- Far fewer moving parts and optical elements required (reduced cost)
- Design flexibility (placement of viewfinder, no viewfinder at all)
- No mirror shock and less noise
- Viewfinder size not limited by image circle
- Possibility to reduce flange distance and create smaller cameras

EVFs don't need to match OVFs in all aspects, they just need to become more attractive overall. So that's why I'm optimistic.

I'm not sure about the comparative cost of OVFs vs. EVFs, but I read somewhere that mirroless camras have only 40% the number of parts that a DSLR has. That must end up reducing cost overall. Imagine if a FF mirrorless were launched at a similar cost to the K-5 when it was released. If F2.8 zooms were available from the start, it would be taken more seriously than any other mirrorless camera to date.

I maybe in the minority here but I prefer an EVF for its unmatched previewing capabilities. I used a GH2 for a while and I would die to get an EVF like this on my K-01. The OVF will die faster than we think IMO, especially in high end cameras where the mirror box is just to slow to compete : the Nikon V1 is already capable of doing 60fps at full resolution. I cannot see how a DSLR could match that with an OVF and mirror unless there is some sort of hybrid solution.

As for Pentax FF, why not a K-01 type of camera? But add an EVF, PD-AF, flippy LCD and WR... and it can be made cheaper and much lighter by removing the prism/mirror box. And start selling it for 1200$. I would buy that in a heart beat, even at 1500$.

Why isn't Pentax more popular?

The more and more I read about it.. it quite clear that we definitely are a special group of people into the detail of things, and love the systems we use.. even the shutter sound.. one of my favourite features in pentax, compared to other "software like" sounds in Canon or Nikon.. pentax sounds more, mechanical.. i would say.. as a machine may be.

I would put it simple as,
Canon = Windows in a software/os perspective (every one has it just because they want a camera, as in buying a pc)
Nikon = Mac (costly, good looking.. "up there" for some people.
Pentax = Linux/Unix - the smart mans choice! :D

I guess in a way that explain why only some guys hold a pentax versus every other person.

DA 18-135mm WR - IQ at edges and corners

I have found the 18-135 to be completely consistent with the photozone charts. I have also found that in 3d objects the lens is superior many better lenses rated better on flat charts. Shooting with the subject in front of a flat wall, the shift in focus helps keep the wall behind your centered subject in focus.

Not only that at 24 mm. It's superior on sharpness edge to edge than any lens in it's class, except for the Tamron 17-50.

I have to say, when shooting landscape over 50mm, I take this lens off the camera and put the DA* 60-250 on. However, shooting wildlife, where borders are bokeh and center sharpness is critical, this is a great lens.

SO stop criticizing the lens for what it isn't good at. If you want sharpness border to border below 50mm, you wanted the Tamron 17-50 not this lens. (I have both). If you wanted a top of range 24mm lens, then this is a great lens. If you wanted a great walk around lens, with the ability to give you great landscapes border to border in it's low end and great center sharpness in it's long end, then this is a great lens. But I have to say, some of the lenses being discussed incomparison, don't give you great anything at any focal length, and I'd be at a loss to figure out where I could even use them. Not so with this lens. Learn how and where to use it and it's a great lens. Sit and dwell on it's supposed weaknesses and you can go on for ever, and accomplish nothing.

Pentax/Ricoh: De-cripple the K-mount! PETITION
Posted By froeschle

274 users already have signed this petition to de-cripple the Pentax K-mount (i.e. to restore the aperture ring coupler).

Excerpt from this interview:

QuoteQuote:

Q: Will the Pentax K-mount ever be "de-crippled" (i.e. will the aperture ring coupler be restored?)

QuoteQuote:

A: technology ... develops ... less importance for the users ... user merit ... user feelings ... if voices will be increased ... yes ...

One of the very few reasons, why I would consider to buy an APS-DSLR again: A de-crippled PKAF2-mount.
An important feature, which the D7000 offers but the K-5 II(s) still lacks.
Why not invest some cents or even dollars?

Pentaxians, let your voices be heard ;) :) !

Copied from #117:

QuoteQuote:

To summarize:

Statements from the interview at Photokina:
  • Feedback from enthusiast users will not be ignored in the Ricoh system.

  • A de-crippled K-mount would be realized (i.e. the aperture ring coupler would be restored), if such "user feelings" are expressed and the corresponding "voices will be increased".

Why this petition:
  • De-crippling the K-mount will lead to an increased and/or more reliable functionality with all lenses possessing an aperture ring.

  • Such an implementation would be straightforward (present in nearly all Pentax film SLRs) and at low cost (mechanical sensor + software implementation). Considering the price of a current DSLR, the additional charge should be marginal.

  • Thus, it is an ideal test case to check the promise of Pentax/Ricoh. Do they really care about the wishes of the enthusiast user base? Nikon, in comparison, cared and realized such a feature.

You did suggest some kind of "voting system or counting system" or "a poll". I asked for a counter or an "I'm in" button. This is the response I got from PentaxForums.com Staff:

I like being liked ;) . So, do so, if you wish (-> Pentax/Ricoh: De-cripple the K-mount! PETITION - PentaxForums.com). However, this thread is rather meant to support the idea or the petition (and not me :) ).
Just a reply here also would not be sufficient, as some members post several times and not all members agree with this campaign.
So, as in a typical petition, I have collected only the supporters up to now in the following way:

A printed version of this thread was given to the Pentax representatives at CP+.
The journalist of pentaxforums.com also included a brief paragraph about it and explained it verbally.
Unfortunately, they did not want to comment on it.
There was also no chance to chat with them after the interview.
So, communication still seems to be based on "transfer and pray".
Hopefully, they will take our feedback to heart.

How about another K-5 update that looks at manual video/audio settings and faster shutter speeds or override when using flash.

When will customers of the brand be able to see as many Pentax cameras and lenses in markets and shops as Canons and Nikons, that's the one and only question I'd like to ask them.

There was a comment back there regarding promotion of the brand, and while I note the desire for lots of bells and whistles, unless Pentax lifts above an 'also ran' when it comes to marketing and presence in the stores, the cash to develop gucci new stuff just won't be there. We really have to look far and wide to find a Pentax in a crowd of SLRs, and despite the passion in this forum, unless Petax lifts its game world-wide, it will remain in the relative background. So, my question to Pentax is what are they doing to lift the brand and get a real presence from users, so that people can see Pentax actually producing results and in the hands of photographers. What are they doing to make ita brand of choce ?

Some suggestions:
- There are so many great lenses out there that are just begging for a Pentax mount- partner with the lens manufacturers
- develop that full frame and market to pros
- work the national distributor relationship

I recently jumped back into Pentax digital (always had film equipment) with the K-5 IIs, and I love it. Kudos to Pentax for getting rid of the AA filter, providing DNG, keeping things small, etc.

One thing I would like is a 26mm or 27mm lens (40mm equivalent), as that's a FL I like to use. And I don't like zooms, sooo....

Also, I have to comment on the lack of innovation on Pentax's part. Aside from the K-7/K-5, they haven't produced much lately that's really unique and useful to the photographic community. Unique, yes, but they seem to be answering a question nobody's asking. In the film days, they would often come out with groundbreaking products. Now, they're just following the crowd. Perhaps Hoya had something to do with it. I'm hoping Ricoh can jump start Pentax's imagination soon. What I like about Pentax is that they're (ususally) different, but in a useful, practical way. Dare to be different again, Pentax. And I'm not talking about full frame, either. That'd be nice, but I'm happy with APS-C.

Just my two cents worth. Not trying to start a war.

Pentax has previously indicated that an FF model is being developed but that it would need a unique selling proposition in order to be marketed.

Does Pentax still think this way, or would the only FF camera that has both an optical viewfinder and in-body image stabilization not be unique enough?

Any plans for exploiting the patent on the hybrid viewfinder?
Or perhaps a five-way image stabilisation as Olympus is already offering (would be great for macro photography)?

Has the timeline for launching the FF model become anymore concrete?

An opportunity to go bankrupt? Non-existent 3rd party lens support is a very good reason for lots of potential customers NOT to buy into a Pentax system. Probably an even bigger reason then for example lack of FF format, or lack of up to date flash system.

Moreover, lack of 3rd party lens support is a symptom. Those manufacturers find the K-mount market to small to be of any interest. But a few years ago, that was market apparently much more interesting. In other words: K-mount market share is shrinking fast, no matter what the sales figures say. A typical patient that claims to be feeling fine, while the symptoms prove otherwise.

I agree with questions I read about flash system improvement, tethering , and new image processor.

And talking abot lenses:

3rd party lens manufacturers are stop developing (or less developing) for K mount. Would you consider this a risk?

are there any alliances between 3d party and Pentax? (e.g. Tamron 18-270 vs Pentax 18-270)?

The lack of support for tethering and published API’s has been one of the big reasons I switched brands. PK-tether was usable on a PC, but with my new system I now can tether with a PC, tablet or phone both wired or wireless and at a very low cost. Since Canon & Nikon publish their API’s, applications are easily written for those cameras.

To my mind there are two areas where Nikon & Canon both eat Pentax's lunch:

1. No tethering API (at all). This is crazy. The functionality is exposed over USB (se pk-tether) but it's completely undocumented / supported meanaing that software developers like Adobe / Apple aren't able to incorporate Pentax into automated studio workflows (i.e. shooting directly from lightroom) as has been available for years on Canon / Nikon ... sorta 10 years behind the times here.

2. The Flash system. Especially the maximum trigger sync speed. Enough said about this already in this thread.

Just touch them on these:

Flash - They seriously NEED to look at it and overhaul everything about it. Sync speed, accurate pTTL, wireless triggers, and stuffs..

Lenses - Inform them to do a reality check by reading more photography magazines of OTHER camps and observe their lenses. Heck, even m4/3 has good fast lenses. And don't bullcrap about design and all that nonsense.. They have did it in their line of legacies, why can't now?

AF system - Not for me to comment since i'm all the way manual but i did use them once awhile and i feel the AF points are much too big with limited spots in the frame.

Body - I don't care about FF.. Tell them to stop playing the stupid Apple game, will they? Take a look at the bodies made currently.. They are like a little bit here, and a little bit there.. Even their lenses... Quickshift for some, but WR for some and then not so fast for some. What is this? iPhone camera?? Milking users dry with test bodies as decoy until the next product?

That would be interesting to have a word about why new lenses are often slower than their previous iteration (I'm thinking DA 35 f/2.4 and DA 50 f/1.8). This is a bit embarassing as not only we must shoot at higher ISOs to compensate, and we loose DoF (when APS-C already robbed us of a factor 1.5).

Pentax is famous for their high quality prime lenses and weather sealing. The current options for a 50mm equivalent lens are the 31/1.8 and the 35/2.4. The former is 12 years old and does not have weather sealing, and it's not a cheap lens by any means. The latter does have weather sealing but is rather slow, and it's plastic. Fuji has shown that it is very much possbible to make a relatively small but high performing 35/1.4 lens at an affordable price. Are there any plans to continue the trend started with the 55/1.4; can we expect a DA STAR 35/1.4 or f/1.8 lens?

I would be interested in the FF topic, I wanna know all information they can provide about their development status (but they will probably tell us not anything about this ...)
