The 77mm, at typical portrait distances (~10ft) will only have a few inches depth of field shot wide open (1.8)
There is nothing in the camera that indicates DOF other than the viewfinder, and the stock viewfinder focusing screen is unable to represent the shallow DOF of faster lenses. It helps a lot to switch to a focusing screen such as the canon ee-s, but it's still going to be somewhat hard to discern your actual DOF in the small dark K5 viewfinder.
Keep shooting, experience will be the most accurate tool. Remember as distance to subject decreases, so does DOF. Since most portraits are relatively close to the camera you are limited in how to increase DOF and retain bokeh. The only way to increase dof for a given focal length and aperture is to increase distance to subject. Without more distance you need smaller aperture. But, experiment with the smaller aperture since at 77mm, even F:2.8 produces nice bokeh if the subjects are separated adequately from their background and 2.8 nearly doubles your usable DOF.

I can't believe this lens is only $150.
Is it the sharpest 300mm lens? Nope, not by a long shot, but the results far exceeded my expectations. Glad I picked one up. |

Why?
Sometimes, that may be the effect desired....
Vibrate violently? Never heard of this. Never experienced it while shooting video handheld.
Examples or references to this?

True, but it was quicker. Given the choice, which I had in this case, I chose to not to wait weeks but rather get a replacement from the place of purchase and let them deal with the slow repair. One of the reasons that when I buy online, I buy from Amazon. No BS returns/replacements. Had replacement in my hands within a week from shipping the defective body out.
I had read that, and experienced it with my K10. The K5 wasn't drifting, it initially seemed OK with some AF adjustments. Within 1000 clicks it was not even adjustable anymore and it swung wildly between FF and BF. Something may have been easily fixed, I dunno, got my replacement and an extended warranty just in case ;)

Thanks a lot for posting this.
My first K5 body was defective, FF and BF all over the place, and after many frustrating hours with various focus charts/methods it was returned and replaced. According to the charts, the new body seems to be good at default, (+/- 0), but I will definitely be using this method to confirm. :)

Just get a 540AF or a Metz 48/58 and be done with it.
You'll be very glad you did. Once you have P-TTL, you'll likely find yourself using flash much more than you used to. Not to mention the built in wireless function which is quite handy.
Flag it and bounce it, or bounce card it where no bounce is available, and enjoy the great results. ;)

Stunning.
I love the tonal range. Great skin tone, black blacks, just great job on the B&W conversion. Care to share your B&W process?
I just scored a tak 135 2.5 off ebay. Cant wait to get it.... and join the club ;). I've apparently caught prime fever since I got the K-5.

Hello from Pennsylvania!
Long time Pentax 35mm film addict (learned on K1000 back in the '80s)
Was distracted by "other brand" and vintage medium format for many years, but now exploring digital with Pentax the last few years. K10D and now a K-5
More time this year so I'm finding my self on the site more and more, figured it was time to start posting. :D

Here is a shot from a few years ago with my M50 1.7 mounted to my trusty K10D.
I'll dig up more later, just haven't kept up with uploading to my photo site in the last few years, been too busy.
It's the only Pentax-M I have at the moment, but now that I have recovered from purchassing the K-5 and a couple new zooms I am on the hunt for M, F and A primes. Actually just PM'd another member about purchasing a M28 2.8 ;) |
